The Development of the C Language*

ABSTRACT
The C programming language was devised in the early 1970s as a system implementation language for the nascent Unix operating system. Derived from the typeless language BCPL, it evolved a type structure; created on a tiny machine as a tool to improve a meager programming environment, it has become one of the dominant languages of today. This paper studies its evolution.
Introduction
NOTE:
It was then collected in the conference proceedings: History of Programming Languages-II ed. Thomas J. Bergin, Jr. and Richard G. Gibson, Jr. ACM Press (New York) and Addison-Wesley (Reading, Mass), 1996; ISBN 0-201-89502-1.

This paper is about the development of the C programming language, the influences on it, and the conditions under which it was created. For the sake of brevity, I omit full descriptions of C itself, its parent B [Johnson 73] and its grandparent BCPL [Richards 79], and instead concentrate on characteristic elements of each language and how they evolved. C came into being in the years 1969-1973, in parallel with the early development of the Unix operating system; the most creative period occurred during 1972. Another spate of changes peaked between 1977 and 1979, when portability of the Unix system was being demonstrated. In the middle of this second period, the first widely available description of the language appeared:

It has since spread to many other operating systems, and is one of the most widely used programming languages. C is prized for its efficiency, and is the most popular programming language for writing system software , though it is also used for writing applications . It is also commonly used in computer science education , despite not being designed for novices.

The C Programming Language , by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie ; one of the most read and trusted books on C The C Programming Language (also known as or " the white book ") is a famous computer science book which has been influential in the application and development of the C programming language . The book was written by Dennis Ritchie , who designed the language, and by Brian Kernighan The first edition of the book, published in , discusses the original usage of C by ; this "dialect" of C is sometimes referred to as . In a second edition was published which covers ANSI C . The book has since been translated into over 20 languages. One True Brace Style The book is widely regarded as being very well written, due to the clarity in which it expresses the material combined with the breadth and density of the coverage. There are very few wasted words, while still being approachable. This clarity and conciseness for a highly technical subject is quite remarkable. These qualities make the book still quite useful even today. It is also well known because it was the only coverage of the C language for some time before the standardization bodies developed the exhaustive specifications. The utility and portability of the language for its time also contributed to its popularity, thus making the book describing it a popular one.

C programming course
A short lecture course for staff and students of the School of Physics, UNSW. Suggestions for improvements are welcomed. A note to random people who find this on the Web: this "course" was never meant to be more than a thumbnail introduction to C to supplement some informal lectures written in a hurry to try and give our graduate students (who mostly know FORTRAN) some knowledge of C. It is not superbly written, and the HTML leaves a lot to be desired. At the time (1994) there wasn't much available on the Web, hopefully some decent C courses have appeared by now. I hope that you find something useful here. Sometime I may get a chance to improve it... Wednesdays, 4pm, in Room 112. Written by Michael Ashley.
Why would you want to learn C rather than FORTRAN?
  • C is the most widely used programming language.
  • Even though FORTRAN is still in heavy use by Physicists, it is debatable whether it is dominant.
  • If you want to get a computer-related job outside the field of Physics, you really need to know C.
  • C is the first language ported to any new computer architecture. In fact, FORTRAN compilers often emit C code!
