CSDaily.com is a computer science news site aiming to provide useful information for computer science professionals, researchers, students, and instructors. Software Carpentry posted by tin on Friday August 26, @05:17PM
Some of my earliest memories are of my father working on carpentry projects. Thus I might be a bit biased towards the title of Greg Wilson's programming course for non-CS scientists, Software Carpentry . Having recently purchased a programming book for a non-programmer, I noticed that it did a reasonable job of covering the basics of the programming language but not so much about all the ancillary tasks that make up software development. Software Carpentry manages that in spades, trying to cover almost everything that you could find useful. Beginning CS students could find this useful, particularly those who are taught basics of programming languages, but receive no instruction on source control, building makefiles, and other tasks that are amazingly helpful but not absolutely essential for class work. It reminds me of the excellent Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual in that it covers every part of a project, from describing the tools to completion and maintenance.

UW Constraint-Based Systems
Welcome to the home page for the Constraints research group at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of Washington A constraint is a relation that should be satisfied for example, that a line remain horizontal, that a resistor in an electrical circuit simulation obey Ohm's Law, or that one column in a web page table be at least twice as wide as another. Constraints have been used in a variety of languages and systems, particularly in user interface toolkits, in planning and scheduling, and in simulation. UW constraints research has been in several areas, including the design and implementation of constraint solvers, applying constraints to user interface construction and to simulation, and the design and implementation of constraint programming languages. The group is not currently active Alan Borning (the primary faculty member involved) has gotten distracted by the simulation of urban development but who knows; we might start up again sometime. There is certainly more to be done!

We have designed a number of constraint satisfaction algorithms over the years, including DeltaBlue, SkyBlue, Indigo, Ultraviolet (is there a pattern here?), and Cassowary (I guess not). For researchers interested in experimenting with such algorithms, we recommend Cassowary; for certain applications, DeltaBlue may be useful as well.

Argonne National Laboratory
University of Chicago The Distributed Systems Laboratory (DSL) is a research and software development group within the Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne National Laboratory and the Department of Computer Science at The University of Chicago A Grid is a persistent infrastructure that supports computation-intensive and data-intensive collaborative activities, especially when these activities span organizations. Grid computing facilitates the formation of "Virtual Organizations" for shared use of distributed computational resources. Under the leadership of Dr. Ian Foster , the DSL hosts research and development activities designed to realize the potential of "Grids" for computational science and engineering. Together with Carl Kesselman's Center for Grid Technologies at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute , we are co-founders of the Globus Project TM , a highly-collaborative international and multidisciplinary effort to make Grid computing a reality.

Graph-Theoretic Concepts in Computer Science
June 14-16, 2001, Boltenhagen near Rostock , Germany
The WG 2001 workshop continues the series of 26 predecessing WG workshops into the new millenium. Since 1975, WG took place twenty times in Germany, two times in Austria as well as in The Netherlands and once in Italy, in Slovakia and in Switzerland. WG 2001 will be held at Boltenhagen (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) which is a nice conference site directly at the Baltic Sea side. The workshop aims at uniting theory and practice by demonstrating how graph-theoretic concepts can be applied to various areas in Computer Science, or by extracting new problems from applications. The goal is to present recent research results and to identify and explore directions of future research. The workshop is well-balanced w.r.t. established researchers and young scientists. The proceedings of this workshop have been published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science series
