Zelenka was born in Louňovice pod Blankem, a small market town southeast of Prague in what was then Bohemia . His father was a schoolmaster and organist there. Nothing more is known with certainty about Zelenka's early years. He probably received musical training in the center of Prague at a Jesuit college named the Clementinum. It is known that Zelenka served Baron Hartig, the imperial governor resident in Prague before becoming a violone player in the royal orchestra at Dresden in about 1710. He studied counterpoint in Vienna under Fux from 1715 and was back in Dresden by 1719. Except for a visit in 1723 to Prague to take part in the performance of Fux's opera "Constanza e Fortezza", he remained a resident of Dresden until his death. Whether or not he ever went to

Jan Dismas Zelenka
Jan Dismas Zelenka was a Bohemian composer, primarily associated with the court at Dresden. His early education was in Prague, and his first employment was as a double bass player. As a composer, Zelenka was a late bloomer. He did not begin composing major works until his late thirties. In 1716 and 1717 he traveled first to Vienna to study with J.J. Fux, and then to Italy to study with Antonio Lotti . Upon his return his duties expanded, and in 1729 he succeeded Johann David Heinichen as director of church music. In 1733 he received the title of court composer. Zelenka's output consists primarily of sacred works, including dozens of masses, motets, etc. It has only been relative recently that interest in Zelenka's music has increased, and his many of his works have been performed and recorded.

Jan Dismas Zelenka, baroque composer:
born Lounovice 1679, died Dresden 1745.
Q.
Why did Zelenka's music disappear into obscurity for 200 years? A. This is discussed at length in Janice Stockigt's book . After Zelenka's death, much of his music was "kept under lock and key" by the Dresden court, and the reasons for this are not clear. Telemann is known to have written of ZWV 55 ( Responsoria ) being guarded jealously "as something very rare" (a more complete translation is given below). Copies of certain works (which had presumably been given away while Zelenka was alive) were made after his death and ended up in different parts of Germany and Czechoslovakia. There were even a few performances in the 1800s. Perhaps one of the strongest reasons for the obscurity of Zelenka's music was that Catholic liturgical music had no place in a Lutheran society.
Q. How many composers of his time did Zelenka actually meet? A. Perhaps it is more relevant to ask which composers he didn't meet! Between 1716 and 1719, he studied under Fux in Vienna and had Quantz as his student. Zelenka would also have met Antonio

9. Jan Dismas Zelenka: A Biographical Note
jan dismas zelenka Biography covers his Dresden Court employment and compositions.
http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxzelenka.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Jan Dismas ZELENKA Capellmeister from 1617 to 1672. In the early 1700s, composers, impresarios, famous singers, and instrumental virtuosos came from all over Europe, including the eastern countries, and Dresden's display of splendor as the "Florence on the Elbe," the predominant center of music and the arts in 17th- and 18th-century Germany, reached its zenith during the reign of Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) as Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Born in Loudovice, Bohemia in 1679 and son of an organist, Jan Dismas Zelenka was educated at the Prague Jesuit College, with which he continued to remain in contact. In 1710, he moved to Dresden, where he became principal double-bass player of the Dresden court orchestra. Apart from specific journies to Italy, Vienna and periodic returns to Prague, Zelenka would remain in Dresden for the rest of his life. In 1697, the King-Elector Augustus the Strong of Saxony had assumed the Polish crown, a step that obliged him to adopt the Roman Catholic faith although Saxony was predominantly Lutheran. Thus the Royal Court at Dresden maintained two religious "faces", on the one hand honoring strictly Lutheran Bach with the title of Royal Court Composer , and on the other hand bestowing on Zelenka the title of Court Composer of Church Music for his numerous sacred works composed for the Dresden Catholic Church. So we find in Zelenka's surviving compositions numerous sacred works, some 30 masses, psalms, and three oratorios with biblical subjects, totaling in all some 150 works, side by side with secular instrumental compositions reflecting his role in the Court Orchestra, of which he became conductor for five seasons.

ZELENKA, JAN DISMAS BIOGRAPHY
The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka played the double bass in the royal orchestra in Dresden, whence he was despatched for study in Italy, eventually returning to spend the rest of his life in the Saxon capital. It was expected that he would succeed Heinichen as court Kapellmeister, but the position went, instead, to Hasse, and Zelenka remained, now as Church Composer, a position of much less importance. He won the admiration of distinguished contemporaries, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, for his use of counterpoint, his harmonic imagination and originality, and made some use of Bohemian folk elements. Orchestral Music Zelenka's orchestral compositions include a set of five Capriccios, among other compositions in the musical idiom of his time. Vocal and Choral Music Much of Zelenka's surviving work is in the form of sacred vocal music, settings of the Mass or of movements from the Mass, of psalms and of canticles.

Jan Dismas Zelenka 1679-1745
Little is known of Zelenka's life before 1704. He may have been educated by the Jesuits in Prague. In 1710 he joined the band of Dresden's Hofkapelle as a player of the double-bass. In 1717 Zelenka obtained leave of absence to study with Fux in Vienna (during which time he also taught counterpoint to Quantz ). That same year Zelenka accompanied the Elector to Italy where he studied with Lotti . Zelenka's works include Masses oratorios motets Psalms , and other church music. Zelenka is mentioned in a letter (1775) from Carl Philipp Emanuel to Forkel as one whose works his father had regarded highly in his later years.

Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745)
Zelenka was the most important Bohemian composer before Gluck. He wrote no operas and few instrumental works, but a great body of sacred music for the Catholic court at Dresden plus a few choice secular works. His music is characterized by passus duriusculus chromatic descent. Another distinguishing characteristic is slow triplets not infrequently used by Zelenka, though rarely heard in the works of better known late baroque composers.

Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745)
Zelenka was a court musician in Dresden for most of his career. Except for brief periods of travel during which he studied or participated in music research, he served as a double bass player in the court orchestra and later aided the ailing Kapellmeister in his duties. Upon the death of the Kapellmeister, the position was awarded to another musician, an event that led Zelenka to feel disillusioned by the lack of recognition he had received for his acheivements. He was a skilled contrapuntalist and a creative harmonic composer. His works are marked by extremely precise dynamic directions and some contain the unusual notation for crescendo that describes each progression in intensity, for example the words "piano", "forte" and "piu forte" written under one instrumental note. - Malaspina Biography
