Symphonie Espagnole During his tenure as professor to the Conservatoire, Ysaÿe continued to tour an ever-broadening section of the world, including all of Europe, Russia, and the United States. Despite health concerns, particularly regarding the condition of his hands, Ysaÿe was at his best when performing. It was, as he said, what "animates me and gives me new life; it opens up unlimited horizons to my eyes . . . [When I play] I love everything in the world. I let go my feelings and my heart." The concern for the well-being of his hands, however, continued to be a worry, particularly his left hand. Though Leopold Auer, in an analysis of Ysaÿe's playing, blamed his hand problems on faulty bow technique, it is more likely that it could be attributed to his excessive weight and diabetes affecting circulation of his blood. Debussy and Saint-Saens string quartets and of course the Franck sonata and the Chausson . These last two works are ones which became closely associated with Ysaÿe and with which he increased his fame and that of the composers. Particularly the Franck sonata he "carried . . . 'round the world like a torch and gave Franck one of the few earthly joys he knew."

He became the most famous violinist of his generation particularly in the French speaking world. In this century, the violinists who revered his memory included Kreisler , Thibaud and Enesco The first winner of the Concours International Eugene Ysaye, initiated in Brussels in his memory in 1937, was David Oistrakh. Ysaye's playing was described as magisterial, full-blooded and titanic although he could be lyrical and poetic when required. His most famous disciple in terms of sonority was Fritz Kreisler who always proclaimed him as the greatest of all violinists. Following his tours of USA as a violinist he acquired a tenure as conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1918 and achieved fame in this new role. This was probably more because he had become afflicted with trembling hands which affected his phenomenal technique rather than a particular desire to start a new career. Eugene Ysaye Works His third career was as a composer in a post-romantic style although with a twentieth century technique.

Brussels, May 12, 1931. At the age of four Ysae began to study violin with his father, a theater conductor. At seven, he was enrolled at the Li¨ge Conservatory as a pupil of Desire Heynberg, winning second prize in 1867. In 1869 he lef the conservatory in a dispute with his mentor, but was readmitted in 1872 as a pupil of Rodolphe Massart, winning first prize in 1873 and the silver medal in 1874. He then continued his training on scholarship at the Brussels Conservatory with Adam Tadeusz Wieniawski, and later completed his studies with HENRI VIEUXTEMPS in Paris from 1876 to 1879. In 1879 YsaŸe became concertmaster of Bilse's orchestra in Berlin. He appeared as a soloist at Pauline Lucca's concerts in Cologne and Aachen. In Germany he met ANTON RUBINSTEIN, who took him to Russia, where he spent two winters. He also toured in Norway. In 1883 he settled in Paris, where he met C‰SAR FRANCK, V INCENT D'INDY, and other contemporary composers, and gave successful concerts. YsaŸe formed a duo with the pianist Raoul Pugno and started a long series of concerts with him, establishing a new standard of excellence. In 1886 he married Louise Bourdeau. Franck dedicated his violin SONATA to them as a wedding present, and YsaŸe's interpretation made it famous. From 1886 to 1898 he was a professor at the Brussels Conservatory. In 1886 he also organized the YsaŸe Quartet (with Crickboom, L©on Van Hout, and Joseph Jacob).
