An excerpt from the interview by The Wire (1998) "Q: How did you come to organise the Loft Concerts series and how did you choose the people that you presented there? A: Yoko invited me to do it. I had already made contact with the people before when I was at Berkeley, except for Jackson MacLow I met in New York. I made contact with Henry Flynt before I came to New York, and I naturally already knew Terry Jennings and Terry Riley. Joseph Byrd I knew from the University of California, and Simone Forti I knew from Ann Halprin's class in Kentfield, California. That was the class that Terry Riley and I taught during summer 1960, and where I first delivered Lecture 1960. That's where I met [sculptor] Robert Morris too. The first time Yoko came to my apartment at Bank Street I guess she noticed that I had all these scores that I had collected and that I knew all these composers. Eventually I selected from among those scores for An Anthology [a book of La Monte's work, which was eventually published in 1963]. La Monte Young (born October 14, 1935) is an American composer, commonly seen as the first minimalist composer and one of the four most celebrated leaders of the minimalist school, along with Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley, despite having little in common formally with Glass and Reich. His works have been included among the most important and radical post World War II avant-garde, experimental, or drone music. Both his proto-Fluxus and "minimal" compositions question the nature and definition of music, and often stress elements of performance Life Born to a Mormon family in Bern, Idaho, his family moved several times in his childhood while his father searched for work before settling in Los Angeles, California. He studied at Los Angeles City College, and came out ahead of Eric Dolphy in a saxophone audition for the school's jazz band. In LA's jazz milieu, he also played alongside notable musicians like Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and Billy Higgins. A number of Young's early works use the twelve tone technique, which he studied under Leonard Stein at UCLA. (Stein had served as an assistant to Arnold Schoenberg when Schoenberg, the inventor of the twelve-tone method, had taught at UCLA.) When Young visited Darmstadt he encountered the music and writings of John Cage. There he also met Cage's collaborator, pianist David Tudor, subsequently gave premiers of some of Young's works. At Tudor's suggestion, Young engaged in a correspondence with Cage. Within a few months Young was presenting some of Cage's music on the West Coast; in turn Cage and Tudor included some of Young's works in performances throughout the U.S. and Europe. By this time Young had taken a turn toward the conceptual, using principles of indeterminacy in his compositions and incorporating non-traditional sounds, noises, and actions.

I'm sure this release will be quickly unavailable, stopped by MELA Foundation lawyers, so buy your copy now. The central debate boils down to composition creditYoung wants all involved artists to sign a statement acknowledging him as the sole composer of the music, while Conrad and Cale refuse, believing the music to be a group composition. Zazeela presumable sides with Young (being married to him), and MacLise has passed on to another life. Table of the Elements came across this bootleg copy of the recording and have boldly released it anyway. Day of Niagra sounds terrible, sounding as if the band was playing in a sewer, with some parts of the tape even dropping out. MacLise's contribution is negligible: some slight tabla drumming on the first 9 minutes that actually sounds like tape flutter. Most importantly, Young is barely audible, his Tanna Tuvanesque throat singing floats in and out of range. Conrad and Cale are the main focus here, so perhaps this is another reason why Young wants this recording suppressed.
