Abstract: We explore a novel method to generate and characterize complex networks by means of their embedding on hyperbolic surfaces. Evolution through local elementary moves allows the exploration of the ensemble of networks which share common embeddings and consequently share similar hierarchical properties. This method provides a new perspective to classify network-complexity both on local and global scale. We demonstrate by means of several examples that there is a strong relation between the network properties and the embedding surface.

Identification and Characterization of Macrophage Inflammatory Protein 2 Stephen D. Wolpe, Barbara Sherry, Diane Juers, George Davatelis, Roger W. Yurt, and Anthony Cerami In response to endotoxin, macrophages secrete a protein with a molecular mass of 6000 Da and with an affinity for heparin. This protein, which we term ``macrophage inflammatory protein 2,'' is a potent chemotactic agent for human polymorphonuclear leukocytes. In addition, subcutaneous administration of the monokine causes a localized inflammatory reaction. Partial N-terminal sequence data reveal similarity to a family of proteins, the archetype of which is platelet factor 4. Although macrophage inflammatory protein 2 is a distinct member of the platelet factor 4 family, its sequence is most closely related to that of the gro/KC gene product, which is expressed in transformed or platelet-derived growth factor-treated cells.

The New Rabbi Now in paperback, with a dramatic new afterword Stephen Fried's groundbreaking book about the politics of community, the power of inspirational leaders, the retail business of religion, the yearning for spirituality, and the wonderfully complicated world of American Jews.
From award-winning journalist Stephen Fried comes a vividly intimate portrait of American Judaism today, in which faith, family, and community are explored through the dramatic life of a landmark congregation as it seeks to replace its legendary retiring rabbiand reinvent itself for the next generation.
The center of this compelling chronicle is Har Zion Temple on Philadelphia's Main Line, which for the last seventy-five years has been one of the largest and most influential congregations in America. For thirty years Rabbi Gerald Wolpe has been its spiritual leader, a brilliant sermonizer of wide renownbut now he has announced his retirement. It is the start of a remarkable nationwide search process largely unknown to the lay worldand of much more. For at this dramatic moment Wolpe agrees to give extraordinary access to Fried, inviting himand the readerinto the intense personal and professional life of the clergy and the complex behind-the-scenes life of a major Conservative congregation. These riveting pages bring us a unique view of Judaism in practice: from Har Zion's strong-willed leaders and influential families to the young bar and bat mitzvahs just beginning their Jewish lives; from the three-days-a-year synagogue goers to the hard core of devout attendees. We are touched by their times of joy and times of grief, intrigued by congregational politics, moved by the search for faith. We witness the conflicts between generations about issues of belief, observance, and the pressures of secular life. We meet Wolpe's strong-willed, ailing wife and his sons, one of whom has become a celebrity rabbi in Los Angeles. And we follow the author's own moving search for meaning as he reconnects with the religion of his youth.

As the ANC we were concerned that while the conferences held every five years and their elections are important, they do not allow for the discussion of theoretical and strategic issues. A strategic conference is due to be held in July on race and racism and the ANC as a popular movement. A draft input document on motive forces of the national democratic revolution was prepared for this, but it was weak, naming the motive forces as the black working class, the middle classes, and the patriotic bourgeoisie, and lining them up like soccer teams Chiefs and Pirates. I have been asked to be part of the drafting team to revise the document. My first encounter with Harold Wolpe was while preparing a draft SACP input in April 1989, naming the same motive forces. Harold had an impact on improving this static notion of forces and classes. These social forces are heavily contested, and they have their own stratification and tendencies. There is a great political contest for their political allegiance. The Alliance has its own contests, internally and outside. How we understand the Alliance is often filtered through the media, and through our ideological paradigms.

I live in the presence of God.
Sam Harris: Your claim that religion is not a matter of believing in propositions is just manifestly false.
Rabbi Wolpe: I didn't say religion. I said belief in God.
Very good debate. However, this particularly annoyed me from Wolpe.
