Introduction The list of Wolpe's known compositions is not near complete; and some of the years of composition I do not know. I would be thankful for any additional information that anyone reading this page might be able to give me. Submissions for additional references, recordings and reviews of them will also be greatly appreciated and added to this page, with acknowledgement. NB All umlauted vowels in German are indicated in a traditional convention of simply following the vowel with an 'e'. This avoids difficulties of browser and terminal capabilities regarding fonts.

Slowly Watching Memory An analysis of Morton Feldman's "Rothko Chapel" Diploma - Thesis in the Field of Music Composition (M.A.) Presented at the Third International Conference on Jewish Music in London, UK Introduction " Rothko Chapel " Morton Feldman composed "Rothko Chapel” as a tribute to his friend, the American painter, Mark Rothko. In 1971, at the request of the Menil Foundation of Houston, Texas, Rothko created an environment in which his 14 monumental paintings played a central role. These paintings act as objects on which all visitors to the Chapel, religious or non-religious could use for meditation. The life and work of Morton Feldman was very similar to that of Mark Rothko. Both were of eastern European Jewish heritage; both were involved in creating a new form of abstract art; and both were motivated to discover the mystery of perception within art. Feldman’s "Rothko Chapel", although abstract in its general unfolding, presents the listener with particular problems in regard to semiotic understanding.

    13. DAVID TUDOR: Biography
He studied with H. William Hawke (organ, theory), Irma wolpe Rademacher (piano) and stephan wolpe (composition and analysis). His first professional activity
TUDOR biography David Tudor was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1926. He studied with H. William Hawke (organ, theory), Irma Wolpe Rademacher (piano) and Stephan Wolpe (composition and analysis). His first professional activity was as an organist, and he subsequently became known as one of the leading avante-garde pianists of our time. Tudor gave highly acclaimed first or early performances of worksby contemporary composers Earle Brown, Sylvano Bussotti, Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Christian Wolff, Stephan Wolpe, and La Monte Young, among others. Tudor began working with John Cage in the early fifties, as a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and with Cage's Project of Music for Electronic Tape. Tudor gradually ended his active career as a pianist, turning exclusively to the composition of live electronic music. As a composer, Tudor chose specific electronic components and their interconnections to define both composition and performance drawing upon resources that were both flexible and complex. Tudor was one of four Core Artists who collaborated on the design of the Pepsi Pavilion for Expo '70, Osaka, Japan, a project of Experiments in Art and Technology, Inc. Many of Tudor's compositions have involved collaborative visual forces: light systems, laser projections, dance, theater, television, film. Tudor's last project, Toneburst: Maps and Fragments , was a collaboration with visual artist Sophia Ogielska. Tudor's several collaborations with visual artist Jacqueline Monnier included the development of a kite environment installed at the Whitney Museum (Philip Morris, NYC) in 1986, at the exhibition "Klangraume" in Dusseldorf in 1988, and at the Jack Tilton Gallery in New York City in 1990. Other collaborators have included Lowell Cross, Molly Davies, Viola Farber, Anthony Martin, and Robert Rauschenberg.

    Stefan Wolpe
Stefan Wolpe was bom in Berlin in 1902 to Jewish parents, and studied at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory and the Hochschule für Musik. Here his rebellion against academic musical tradition was instigated, unusually, by his discovery of Dada and the Bauhaus. Wolpe visited the Bauhaus soon after that revolutionary school for arts and crafts was founded in 1919, and during the next few years he went to Weimar frequently and sat in on lectures and studio activities in the preliminary course. He quit the diploma course in composition at the Hochschule in the spring of 1921 after only one term and applied to join Busoni's class. Although he was not admitted, Busoni took an interest in hirn, looked at his music and gave him valued advice. Wolpe thereafter regarded Busoni with boundless admiration, and some aspects of Busoni's "New Classicality" entered his thinking. For Wolpe, however, the Bauhaus was "the place in which modern art was being taught, experimented on, and we all travelled there like pilgrims to Jerusalem or Mecca'. Several of the teachers Wolpe came to know - Gertrude Grunow, Itten, Kandinsky, Klee, Moholy-Nagy, Muche and Oskar Schlemmer - were interestad in correspondences among the arts, and music and theatre ware important components of the Bauhaus programme.

An Interview with Yoko Ono by Hans Ulrich Obrist, 1992 Q: Could you tell me a little about the early beginnings of instructions in your work? YOKO: It started with music. I was trained as a musician since my pre-school years. My mother put me in a very special school called Jiyu-Gakuen in Japan, before I went to the elementary school. Jiyu-Gakuen, which translates as "Learning Garden of Freedom," gave early musical training to pre-school children. We learnt perfect pitch, harmony, playing the piano, and composing simple songs. Some very famous Japanese composers came out of this school. One of the most important things I learnt in that school, though I only knew how important it was in hindsight, was to listen to the sounds in ones' own environment. We received homework in which you were supposed to listen to the sound of the day, and translate each sound into musical notes. This made me into a person who constantly translated the sounds around her into musical notes as a habit. Q: The sounds of the city...
