Affiliation: Lutheran
Because of the rationalism and determinism of Wolff's philosophy, the orthodox Lutherans of Halle denounced him in 1623. The charge led, via intricate byways on which the King of Prussia was to be found, to Wolff's summary dismissal from Halle, though he was later vindicated. It appears that Wolff never considered himself to be outside the fold.

Physical Sciences Biography: Christian Wolff was a principle advocate of Enlightenment philosophy and rationalism in Germany during the early 18th century. Educated at the universities of Breslau, Jena, and Leipzig, Wolff studied under Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and worked to systematize Leibniz's ideas in a manner which was influential with Immanuel Kant. On the strength of a recommendation from Leibniz, Wolff was appointed to a professorship of mathematics at the University of Halle, but he banished after 16 years there because of a fierce dispute between him and the Pietists. Over the course of his life Wolf wrote on many different topics, but behind them all was the unifying principles of rationalism and mathematical principles which he formed the basis of his philosophical system. Kant believed that Wolff had embarked upon the correct method for studying metaphysics, writing in the second edition of his Critique of Pure Reason that Wolf rightly emphasized the "orderly establishment of principles, clear determination of concepts, insistence upon strictness of proof, and avoidance of venturesome, non-consecutive steps in our inferences." However, Kant parted company with Wolff over the fact that the latter had failed to turn his attention to pure reason itself, believing that as a result Wolff's ideas had been misleading philosophers.

"Wolff came to prominence in the 1950s as an associate of John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and the other American experimentalists of that period, later working with Cornelius Cardew and Frederic Rzewski. His work has gone through many transformations, including minimalism, interdeterminancy, open form and works connected with political issues... Most of the works are recorded here for the first time, as one of the first all-Wolff recitals to be issued. First in a number of releases of Wolff's music to be presented by Mode."
Artist: WOLFF, CHRISTIAN Title: I Like to Think of Harriet Tubman Label: MODE Format: CD Price: Catalog #: MODE 069CD "Wolff is considered a member of 'The New York School' along with John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and David Tudor. The superb performances come from The Barton Workshop, an Amsterdam-based ensemble founded by composer-trombonist James Fulkerson. Among the highlights: the 'Serenade' of 1950, an extraordinary individual work from a sixteen-year-old who had just introduced himself to Cage. It intimates the minimalist movement which was to come a decade later. 'For Morty (1987), written in memory of Morton Feldman, used three instruments that have a particular significance in Feldman's work the vibraphone, glockenspiel and piano. Its tender fragility reminds one of the unique sensibility of Feldman, while remaining music that only Wolff could have conceived."

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Christian von Wolff (1679-1754), German rationalist philosopher and mathematician, born in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), and educated at the University of Jena. In 1706 he became professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at the University of Halle. Wolff's rationalist doctrines gradually came into sharp conflict with the religious views of some of his faculty colleagues. In 1721 he delivered a lecture in which he cited the moral axioms of Confucius as proof that human reason could attain moral truth by its own efforts. As a result, he was banished from Prussia in 1723 on grounds of atheism and fatalism. He went to Hessen and taught at the University of Marburg until 1740. In that year Frederick II, king of Prussia, recalled Wolff to Halle, where, in 1743, he became chancellor of the university. Wolff's philosophy is a modification of the philosophic system developed by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Although he was not an original thinker, Wolff was important as an organizing and systematizing philosopher. His voluminous writings include

Wolff, Christian Wolff or Wolf, Christian von , German philosopher. One of the first to use the German language instead of Latin, he systematized and popularized the doctrines of Leibniz. Wolff studied at Jena and taught at Leipzig before going to a professorship at Halle (1706–23). His doctrines of apparent fatalism aroused the Pietists to secure his banishment, which he spent as professor at Marburg (1723–40). Recalled to Halle by Frederick the Great in 1740, he became chancellor of the university in 1743. One of Wolff's major works was Vernünftige Gedanken von Gott, der Welt, und der Seele der Menschen [rational thoughts on God, the world, and the souls of men] (1719). The Leibnizian doctrine of preestablished harmony was more prominent than the monad theory in Wolff's presentation, though both were considerably moderated. He is chiefly remembered for his broad concept of philosophy, his insistence on clarity and precision, and his devotion to the power of reason and mathematics. See study by J. V. Burns (1966).

About 26 pages (7,777 words) Christian Wolff (philosopher) Summary
Christian Wolff was a rationalist polymath and an influential leader of the early German Enlightenment. He was born in Breslau into an impoverished family of leather workers. In his academic career, he gained renown by teaching mathematics and became famous for systematizing and updating the German philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Wolff pioneered socio-economics, framed the idea of subsidiarity (the EU welfare model), and made lasting contributions to international law. He developed German into a philosophical language (e.g., coining Begriff nexus rerum praeceptor Germaniae ) who yielded to his critics by choosing Sir Isaac Newton over Leibniz and Christ over Confucius, while preserving the unity of his system of ideas in a reformulated encyclopedic Latin oeuvre.
