I do session work, songwriting, and production projects. I have a well-outfitted home studio for songwriting and some production, and I also work with a nationally acclaimed pro studio here in Seattle. I cover country, country/rock, blues and jazz, both acoustic and electric, solo guitar and full-band arrangements. I like working with songwriters and can take almost any songwriter's demo (even face-to-face), turn it into a full-blown arrangement suitable for any studio in Nashville, select and hire appropriate instrumentation, produce the project, assist with artwork and duplication, and assist with marketing. If you're interested, drop me some email. I am a tone fanatic. I love Teles and Strats - have several. My main guitar is a late-model Telecaster that has been modified with a humbucker in the neck, a Duncan Nashville Strat pickup in the middle, and a Joe Barden Tele pickup in the bridge.

      More Information
My research interests center on ecological responses to climate change and the two-way interactions between the terrestrial biosphere and atmosphere. Most of my work has focused upon late-Quaternary vegetational and environmental change. This is a particularly exciting time to study because 1) it includes large and in some cases quite rapid changes in climate, atmospheric CO , solar radiation, and ice sheet extent, 2) these environmental changes transformed the distribution of plant taxa and the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, 3) numerous well-dated paleoclimatic and paleoecological records enable spatially explicit reconstructions of vegetation and climate history, and 4) Quaternary history sets the context for present-day biogeographic patterns and current challenges in global change research. My training and research approach are fairly broad. I look for ways to apply the lessons drawn from late-Quaternary vegetation dynamics to current questions in global change research, and I work at the interface between data and models, with an emphasis upon quantitative analyses of ecological datasets and mechanistic models of the vegetation and climate system. Much of my recent work has focused on mapping late-Quaternary vegetation history and land cover change in North America, using networks of paleoecological records, with the goal of developing benchmark datasets for refining and testing earth system models. These maps also generate new questions and hypotheses, thus serving as a starting point for further field-based research.

After Late Start, Guitarists Perform in Perfect Time
Bad weather and bad driving directions made John Williams and John Etheridge 40 minutes late starting their two-guitar recital at George Mason University's Center for the Arts on Sunday. But bad playing? There wasn't a note of it.
Williams and Etheridge are something of an odd couple of the guitar. Williams, a renowned classical guitarist, is fastidious and soft-spoken, with more subtlety in his playing.
Etheridge is jazz-oriented, sprawling and ebullient, with more surface flash: He switches effortlessly between acoustic and electric guitar, often contorting his face dramatically while playing the latter, as if trying to squeeze more music out.
Their program was, not surprisingly, eclectic. In solos, Etheridge favored blues and swing, and Williams's focus was folklike music from Venezuela and Paraguay. Together, the guitarists played works from Senegal, Mali and Cameroon in a distinct jazz fusion idiom although the arrangements did become repetitive, with Williams laying down riffs below and Etheridge bouncing, swinging and swaggering above.

    19. John Williams
Founding and former member of the band Solas, Chicagobased john plays the button accordion and the concertina. Includes gigs dates, biography and reviews.
release date Feb 21, 2006 "This loose-limbed Raven soars effortlessly, Chicagoan John Williams, founder member of Solas and a man who's on fluent speaking terms with concertina, accordion, flute, low whistle and piano, brings a zest to both traditional and original tunes, and he's found his spiritual equal in guitarist Dean Magraw, who's a mean draw when it comes to tune writing, too. There's enough space in between this pair's playing to let the oxygen molecules truly ignite, whether in the company of a Kerry barndance (The Gypsy Princess) or a madcap foray onto the unknown (Trippin' Into Eden). What matters most of all, though, is the duo's utter confidence in the music's ability to carve its own identity without a hint of posturing. An inspired pairing." -Siobhan Long, The Irish Times April 25, 2006 The 10-year partnership of St. Paul guitar wizard Dean Magraw and Chicago concertina and button accordion player John Williams, formerly of the band Solas, is beautifully documented on the new CD "Raven." This is an Irish-music duo with seemingly limitless scope, adding jazz licks, ethereal film soundtrack sounds, neo-tango flourishes and a jam-band fan corps to their mix of jigs, reels and airs. Magraw's original compositions are evocative standouts, as is "Perdition Piano Duet," a stark ballad Williams wrote for the film "Road to Perdition." -Terry Sauer, Star Tribune June 16, 2006 "Born of a long standing partnership stretching back over a decade, Raven is an album of assured, fully-realized performances that confidently, nonchalantly distort and dissolve boundaries. Lesser musicians adhere righteously to the lines separating tradition from innovation, soloist from accompanist - but the duo of multi-instrumentalist John Williams and guitarist Dean Magraw interact so effortlessly, and draw from such a wide range of traditions and techniques, that existing borders cease to be relevant. With one listen, the insight and instrumental skill that went into creating Raven, is immediately apparent. Repeated listenings reveal a host of subtle musical undercurrents that speak of Williams and Magraw's profound empathy and endless musicianship." - editor,
