after studying theory and composition with Albert Bing
enrolled at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. Not liking the training with Engelbert Humperdinck, though, he was accepted finally into Ferruccio Busoni’s master class in composition. In order to support himself, he conducted synagogue choirs, tutored students (e.g. Claudio Arrau, Maurice Abravanel) in music theory and contributed articles and reviews to "Der deutsche Rundfunk“. By 1925, Weill had been established as one of the leading composers of his generation, along with Paul Hindemith and Ernst Krenek. In the same time, he turned to writing operas, collaborating a.o. with Georg Kaiser (e.g. "Der Protagonist“, Weill’s sensational theatrical debut in 1926, or "Der Silbersee“, 1933) and with Bertolt Brecht (e.g. "Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny“ or the ballet

WEILL, KURT BIOGRAPHY
Kurt Weill began his career in the early 1920's, after a musical childhood and several years of study in Berlin. By the time his first opera, The Protagonist (Georg Kaiser), was performed in April 1926, he was an established young German composer. But he had already decided to devote himself to the musical theater, and his works with Bertolt Brecht soon made him famous all over Europe. He fled the new Nazi leadership in March 1933 and continued his indefatigable efforts, first in Paris (1933-35), then in the U.S. until his death. Certain common threads tie together his career: a concern for social justice, an aggressive pursuit of highly-regarded playwrights and lyricists as collaborators, and the ability to adapt to audience tastes no matter where he found himself. His most important works: the Violin Concerto (1925), The Threepenny Opera (Bertolt Brecht, 1928)

Gertrude Lawrence in "Lady in the Dark."
On arriving in the USA, he formed a working association with Group Theater, the influential left-wing drama company that was home to such rising talents as Lee J. Cobb, John Garfield, Clifford Odet, Frances Farmer, and Elia Kazan. He also wrote scores for the theater, including "Johnny Johnson" (1936, with Paul Green), "The Eternal Road" (1937, Franz Werfel), and "Knickerbocker Holiday" (1938, with Maxwell Anderson). The last show starred the nonsinging actor Walter Huston, but ironically his version of "September Song" proved to one of the most memorable and enduring moments in popular music. In 1941 Weill collaborated with Ira Gershwin (lyrics) and Moss Hart (book) for "Lady in the Dark," which starred Gertrude Lawrence, and featured "My Ship," "The Saga of Jenny," and "One Life to Live." Two years later came "One Touch of Venus" (Ogden Nash and S.J. Perelman), in which the lovely "Speak Low" was introduced by Mary Martin and Kenny Baker. This was followed by "The Firebrand of Florence" (1945

    M U S I C:
    From Berlin to Broadway
    Kurt Weil's centenary celebrated
at London's Barbican Centre Charlotte Purkis As part of its series of intensive annual weekends devoted to re-examining the life, work and reputation of a single composer, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, supported by the Kurt Weill Foundation of New York, presented a packed series of ambitious concerts and associated events at London's Barbican Centre and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama next door to mark the hundredth anniversary of Weill's birth. Claimed by both German and American national musical traditions as authentically representative of crucial decades in the international history of musical modernism, the selections made from Kurt Weill's large and varied output presented audiences with an unrivalled opportunity to re-examine the stylistic characteristics, extra-musical enthusiasms and cultural politics of the early 20th century. It was also a chance to reconsider the performability of the "populist" and "esoteric" repertoire of lesser and better known pieces with the hindsight of half a century - as many years as the world has been without Weill. Judging by the extensive notes by leading scholars in the detailed programme booklet, notably the British musicologist Erik Levi, Weill would doubtless have approved of the intensive BBC radio coverage which enhanced the accessibility of the event and brought it to a wider audience. This is not only because of the rather chequered interest the early BBC had had in him, but also due to Weill's particular enthusiasm for the medium of radio in its early years.

A simple setting: two singing actors and a pianist. But together they create a world populated by characters more real, haunting and powerful than a season full of traditional theater. Kurt Weill's legendary song book, including selections from "The Threepenny Opera," and the well-known works "Speak Low" and "Mack the Knife" is brought to life by two singers with verve and acting chops to spare.
Alvin Epstein Canadian-born Beth Anne Cole (now a New York City resident) made her singing debut on Canadian television and radio at age 15. After training as an actress in England, she appeared for four seasons at the Shaw Festival in Canada in such operettas as "Rose Marie" and "The Desert Song." She has toured Canada and the U.S. with a one-woman show of songs and poetry, composed for PBS-TV's Sesame Street and written and performed critically acclaimed programs for Canadian radio on Parisian cabaret singer Yvette Guilbert and composer Harold Arlen. Her most recent recording, "Gifts in the Old, Old Ground," was released by Harmony Ridge Music.

      • UK Reviewed by Roderic Dunnett Tuesday, 18 January 2000 Weill was of an ideal generation: just too young for the Somme and Verdun; lucky to escape the Eastern Front. Of an age not just to make the most of, but to epitomise the Expressionist upsurge and satirical Twenties; old enough to have made his mark before Hitler binned all experimental culture. From January 1933 anything daring was Entartete - decadent, forbidden, doomed. Weill's future lay in Paris and from 1935, New York.
