Kurt Weill B orn as the son of the chief cantor of a Dessau (Germany) synagogue, Weill was exposed to music from a young age and showed early indications of promise. He began compositional studies at age 15 with Albert Bing, and 3 years later he enrolled at Berlin's Hochschule für Musik, studying with Engelbert Humperdinck. He left after one year and returned to Dessau to work at the court opera. He came back to Berlin in 1929 to enroll in the Prussian Academy of the arts and study with Busoni. H e had his first theatrical success with the opera Der Protagonist, which featured a libretto by the playwright Georg Kaiser. It was around this time that Weill adopted a new ideology (due, in part to the atmosphere in Germany in the 1920's) and began to explore the idea of using music as an agent for social change (through raising political consciousness). He saw opera as the most powerful way to do this, and wished to change it from a "socially exclusive art" into a "community-forming" one. This involved purging opera of all sentimental, virtuosic, and other similar aspects that were intended solely for entertainment (Morgan, p. 230-231). W eill joined forces in this quest with Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956), a well-known Marxist poet and playwright, and together they produced Mahagonny-Songspiel, a song cycle of six songs, which would later be adapted into the opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny. They also collaborated on the Die Dreigroschenoper (or the Three penny Opera) which was based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera, and which remains one of Weill's most well-known works. In this work, Weill continued to write with popular and jazz song influences (as he had in Mahagonny-Songspiel). Other than a few other more minor projects, the writing team separated, and the rest of the librettos for which Weill wrote music were written by others.

    Kurt Weill
born March 2, 1900, Dessau, Ger.
    died April 3, 1950, New York, N.Y., U.S.
German-born U.S. composer. Son of a cantor, by age 15 he was working as a theatre accompanist. He studied composition briefly with Engelbert Humperdinck , and a conductor's post gave him wide experience. For a master class with Ferruccio Busoni (1920), he wrote his first symphony. He gained attention with his one-act opera Der Protagonist (1925); its sparse and spiky style prefigured that of his greatest works. In 1927 he teamed with Bertolt Brecht to write The Threepenny Opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny . When the Nazis took power in 1933, he fled to Paris with his wife, Lotte Lenya , where he wrote The Seven Deadly Sins (1933). In 1935 the couple immigrated to the U.S.; there he collaborated on musicals such as Knickerbocker Holiday (1938) and Lost in the Stars Threepenny Opera and "September Song" from Knickerbocker Holiday , have remained especially popular.

Introduction (born Dessau, 2 March 1900; died New York, 3 April 1950).
German composer, American citizen from 1943. He was a pupil of Humperdinck, Busoni and Jarnach in Berlin (1918-23); their teaching informed his early music, including the choral Recordare (1923) and the Concerto for violin and wind (1924), the latter also influenced by Stravinsky . But the deeper influence of Stravinsky, coupled with an increased consciousness of music as a social force, led Weill to a rediscovery in the mid-l920s of tonal and vernacular elements, notably from jazz, in his cantata Der neue Orpheus and one-act stage piece Royal Palace , written between two collaborations with the expressionist playwright Georg Kaiser: Der Protagonist and . In 1926 he married the singer Lotte Lenya, who was to be the finest interpreter of his music. His next collaborator was Brecht, with whom he worked on The Threepenny Opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (1929) and Happy End (1929), all of which use the corrupted, enfeebled diatonicism of commercial music as a weapon of social criticism, though paradoxically they have beome the epitome of the pre-war culture they sought to despise. Yet this is done within the context of a new harmonic consistency and focus. These works have also drawn attention from the theatre works in which Weill developed without Brecht during the early 1930s

    16. Tribute To Kurt Weill
A detailed biography and an appreciation of weill s music.
    http://www.youkali.com/weill.html
    Kurt Weill, Youkali's Inspiration
by Youkali takes its name from a beautiful, mournful tango written by the German-American composer Kurt Weill whom verdi has asked me to say a bit about. (For Youkalites still struggling through school, the magic words "Kurt Weill" will always get you bonus points with your finest teachers.)
Kurt Weill was born in Desau, Germany in 1900, the son of a synagogue cantor. He studied composition with Humperdink (of "Hansel and Gretel" fame) and Busoni, and by 22, the Berlin Philharmonic had premiered two of his compositions.
Weill came of age at the end of World War I, in a Europe that was both spiritually exhausted, ghastly, frightening, desperate and remarkably creative. The carnage of World War I had shattered the smug 19th-century illusion that Western societies had achieved perfect, rational civilizations under wise, benign leaders. When the smoke cleared and the millions of bodies were buried, every art form underwent radical change, from old styles of simplistic (and often schmaltzy) charm and harmony to new, terrifying visions of fear, dread, satire, revolt and despair. Even the old recognizeable forms could not disguise the war's hideous legacy; the era produced many compositions for brilliant young pianists returning home minus one of their hands.
Weill's musical legacy is enormous, and all of it broke new musical and theatrical ground. His most famous and enduring works were his Berlin cabaret and theater collaborations with the poet Bertolt Brecht, "The Threepenny Opera" and "The Rise and Fall of the City Mahagonny." "Mack the Knife" is from the former; "The Whiskey Bar Song," made famous by Jim Morrison and The Doors, is from the latter. Mahagonny is a very different place from the serene island of Youkali it's an Alabama city catering to every human depravity, where the only crime is Not Paying the Bill:

Born on 2 March 1900, the son of a cantor in Dessau, Kurt Weill displayed musical talent early; by the time he was twelve, he was composing and during his teens he was accompanying singers from the Dessau Court Opera and mounting concerts. He enrolled at the Berlin Musikhochschule and studied first under Humperdink (which he found stifling) and then, after a year as a theatre conductor, under Busoni. He lived by playing the organ in a synagogue, the piano in a tavern, by tutoring in music theory (including Claudio Arrau) and by becoming a music critic in the young medium of wireless. During the mid-twenties, the success of his works at international festivals and in the theatre placed him swiftly in the front ranks of his contemporaries.
