41. New Sound 27 - ANTON VON WEBERN’S DODECAPHONIC MUSIC
The listener experiencing dodecaphonic works, including those by anton von webern which are analyzed hereinafter, appears to be well “equipped” conceptually

UDC 78.02 Ivana Vesić THE LISTENER AND “SPACE FOR WORK” IN ANTON VON WEBERN’S DODECAPHONIC MUSIC
As far as famous works are concerned, namely certain classics from the repertoire of art music, “the listener has simple and easy access to that which constitutes the idealized way of reacting […] and his work is therefore already done owing to certain other individuals…” (1986, 91). In this case the listener is offered a series of “contextualization cues” so that, “in such a completely ritualized situation”, he only needs to confirm the conventional interpretations of the work (1986, 92). But what happens with the listener when there is not enough of these cues? According to DeNora, in these circumstances the actor/participant “can be given wider space for working on the interpretation of the object or, in other words, he then acts like a ‘composer’” (1986, 92).
Before examining how Tia DeNora’s theoretic views on the mechanism of constructing meaning in music function when applied to twelve-tone music, it is necessary to critically reflect on what is perhaps the author’s key postulate – the concept of the listener’s work. In fact, the problematic issue concerning this concept is DeNora’s claim that a certain composition, if featured in the standard concert repertoire the listening and interpreting of which involves a number of preset “recipes”, must necessarily produce a “staticness” of the listener’s work and vice versa. Moreover, should we accept the hypothesis that listening to music is contingent on concept

Webern, Anton von u u rn) [ key , Austrian composer and conductor; pupil of Arnold Schoenberg. He conducted theater orchestras in Prague and in various German cities until 1918, devoting himself thereafter to composition and teaching. His first composition, a passacaglia for orchestra (1908), which showed the postromantic influence of Mahler, gave no hint of the exclusive use of the twelve-tone technique (see atonality ) of Schoenberg that was to characterize the rest of his output. In his relatively few works, mostly for small chamber combinations or for voice, he reduced music to its barest essentials, depriving it of traditional harmonic concepts. He concentrated many fragmented musical events, ordered by intricate contrapuntal, rhythmic, and dynamic patterns, into extremely contracted time spans. For example, the whole of

Anton Webern December 3 September 15 ) was an Austrian composer and conductor . He was a member of the Second Viennese School . As a student and significant follower of Arnold Schoenberg , he became one of the best-known proponents of the twelve-tone technique ; in addition, his innovations regarding schematic organization of pitch, rhythm and dynamics were formative in the musical technique later known as total serialism
Biography
Webern was born in Vienna Austria , as Anton Friedrich Wilhelm von Webern . He never used his middle names and dropped the von in as directed by the Austrian government's reforms after World War I. After spending much of his youth in Graz and Klagenfurt , Webern attended Vienna University from . There he studied musicology with Guido Adler , writing his thesis on the Choralis Constantinus of Heinrich Isaac . This interest in early music would greatly influence his compositional technique in later years by employing palindromic form on both the micro- and macro-scale and the economic use of musical materials.

(1883-1945) is name-checked on the cover of " Freak Out! " (1966) under the heading "These People Have Contributed Materially In Many Ways To Make Our Music What It Is. Please Do Not Hold It Against Them", since he was one of FZ's favorite composers. He is also mentioned in " The Real Frank Zappa Book Mentioned in " My Favorite Records ", an FZ penned article in Hit Parader (1967): "You ought to look into the complete works of Anton Webern on Columbia (K4L-232), conducted by Robert Craft . That's four records. Robert Craft is not always an excellent conductor, and his performances are not always absolutely accurate, but they probably didn't give him a very good budget because it was modern music, and they wanted to get the job over with, and he was probably under pressure, so don't mind the mistakes that are on there if you're following it with a score."
