Anton von Webern
An Austrian composer of atonal and 12-tone music in many forms, including songs, orchestral, chamber, and choral music; known for Six Pieces for Orchestra (1913). If Berg is the romantic of the so-called "Viennese School," and Schoenberg is the dramatic lyricist, then Webern is the pointillistic impressionist. Webern created a completely new sound and way of composing music, and in a sense he is the most "modern" of any composer listed here. From the delicate beauties of Das Augenlicht ("The Light of the Eyes") for orchestra and chorus (1936), to the mobile-like stars-in-the-sky symmetries of the famous Piano Variations (1936), and the diverse and coloristic mysteries of the Six Pieces for Orchestra (1913), Webern sought a simplicity and beauty he viewed as inherent in earlier music (he once refused to show a pianist the structure of a piece, asking him to just "play it like Bach"). Webern is the quintessential pathfinder. ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide Expand [+] dojo.byId('bio2').innerHTML = 'An Austrian composer of atonal and 12-tone music in many forms, including songs, orchestral, chamber, and choral music; known for Six Pieces for Orchestra (1913). Jump to: navigation search Anton Webern in his studio in M¶dling, Summer 1930 Anton Webern (born Vienna 3 December ; died Mitterill 15 September ) was an Austrian composer . Webern and Alban Berg were the most famous pupils of Arnold Schoenberg , the composer who had invented the twelve tone system . This style of composition is often called the “Second Viennese School”. Webern was probably Schoenberg’s first pupil, and Berg joined them a few weeks later. Webern used the rules of the twelve tone system very strictly in his music. His compositions had a lot of influence on composers of the mid- 20th century who were interested in serialism , especially Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez . Most of Webern’s compositions are very short.

GREAT COMPOSERS An Occasional Series by Dr David C F Wright Based on his article What makes a great composer? ANTON WEBERN Anyone who knows anything about music knows assuredly that Webern is one of the greatest composers of all time. More than most his music has the essential ingredient of greatness namely originality. But he is maligned by some who claim to be musicians and music lovers. It has been said that ignorance makes poor composers to be regarded as great composers and ignorance treats great composers with contempt and disdain so that they are not accepted as great composers whereas, in fact, they are. Many people dismiss Webern because his music is difficult to perform. Others because it does not have pretty tunes that one can easily hum, which attitude shows a totally wrong concept of music. There are composers who wrote nothing but pretty tunes but their music lacks any sense of purpose or meaning. It is shallow and superficial music.
