About Austria ... Back Although Anton von Webern was born in Vienna (December 3, 1883) he grew up in the country. He returned to the capital for his musical training, which included studies in music theory with Guido Adler.
As his dissertation he published an edition of early sixteenth-century liturgical chants. Webern, who was a student of Arnold Sch¶nberg, is considered the father of ”serial”, systematically deconstructed music. His reductionist, but by no means unemotional compositions are miniature masterpieces. Webern composed cantatas, lieder, choral music, pieces for piano, as well as orchestral and chamber music, and also held a series of lectures entitled ”The Path to New Music”. On September 15, 1945, Anton von Webern was shot and killed by mistake in Mittersill in Salzburg province by a soldier of the American occupation forces in a raid intended to capture his son-in-law, who was involved in cigarette smuggling.

He studied at Vienna University under Adler (1902-6), taking the doctorate for work on Heinrich Isaac ; in composition he was one of Schönberg 's first pupils (1904-8), along with Berg
Like Berg, he developed rapidly under Schönberg's guidance, achieving a fusion of Brahms Reger and tonal Schönberg in his orchestral Passacaglia, already highly characteristic in its modest dynamic level and its brevity. But he was closer than Berg in following Schönberg into atonality, even choosing verses by the same poet, Stefan George, to take the step in songs of 1908-9. His other step was into a conducting career, which he began with modest provincial engagements before World War I. MIDI FILE - Orchester Stueck op.6 No.6 After the war he settled close to Schönberg in Mödling and took charge of the Vienna Workers' Symphony Concerts (1922-34). Meanwhile he had continued his atonal style, mostly in songs: the relatively few instrumental pieces of 1909-14 had grown ever shorter, ostensibly because of the lack of any means of formal extension in a language without key or theme. However, the songs of 1910-25 show a reintroduction of traditional formal patterns even before the arrival of serialism (especially canonic patterns, no doubt stimulated, as was the instrumentation of many of these songs, by Pierrot lunaire), to the extent that the eventual adoption of the 12-note method in the Three Traditional Rhymes (1925) seems almost incidental, making little change to a musical style that was already systematized by strict counterpoint.

    Biography
Although his entire corpus of works would require little more than three hours of performance time, Anton Webern nevertheless stands as a pivotal figure among the twentieth century's most signficant composers. While completing only 75 published works, some less than two minutes in length, Webern's music has had a profound effect on the modern musical world. Born on 3 December 1883 in Vienna, Anton was the son of an aristocratic Austrian family. As a youngster he showed little promise. He was a poor speller, had difficulty with mathematics, and was generally disliked by his fellow students in school. Nevertheless, Anton demonstrated some proficiency in his studies on the cello, and through his music lessons he became familiar with the standard classical works of the masters. While Anton's father approved of his son's music as an ennobling hobby, he had hoped that Anton would become an agriculturalist and take over the administration of the family estate. After persistently pressing his case with the elder Webern, Anton was finally allowed to study music at the University of Vienna. Here he flourished, and in 1906 at the young age of 23 he received a Ph.D. in musicology. Two years earlier Webern had met and become the pupil of Arnold Schönberg, the chief proponent of the serial method of composition. This technique differed radically from the more familiar rules of harmony in that it was
