Carl Maria von Weber Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber Eutin Holstein November 18 June 5 in London ) was a German composer conductor pianist ... guitarist and critic , one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school. Weber's works, especially his operas Der Freisch¼tz Euryanthe and Oberon greatly influenced the development of the Romantic opera in Germany. He was also an innovative composer of instrumental music. His compositions for the clarinet , which include two concertos, a concertino, a quintet and a duo concertante, are regularly performed, while his piano music - including four sonatas, two concertos and the Konzertst¼ck (Concert Piece) in F minor - influenced composers such as Fr©d©ric Chopin Franz Liszt and Felix Mendelssohn . The Konzertst¼ck provided a new model for the one-movement concerto in several contrasting sections (such as Liszt's, who often played the work), and was acknowledged by

Carl Maria von Weber's brief biography - his life and major works. He is best known for founding the Romantic school of opera after producing his famous Der Freisch¼tz.
Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1844), German composer of the Romantic era, is best remembered for establishing the Romantic school of opera, and for Der Freisch¼tz, his opera produced in Berlin. He was instrumental in helping found a German national opera style, only challenged earlier by some predecessors including Mozart. Carl Maria (Friedrich Ernst) von Weber, born on 18 November 1786, was a son of a musician. His was cousin of Constanze Weber, wife of Wolgfang Amdaeus Mozart . From childhood, he received a strong musical education from his family-operated traveling Weber Theatre Company, his own mother performing so that by age 13, he successfully produced his opera

Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) Clarinet Quintet in B Flat Major op. 34 (1815) Der Freischutz has eleven themes that appear and reappear throughout the opera; Euryanthe , eight. Weber, more than any composer before his time, realized the importance of the recitative and assigned to it an all-important role in the framework of his operas. He used the orchestra symphonically, making it the spine and backbone of the opera. Finally, he strove for (and to a certain extent realized) a unity of the arts in the Wagnerian sense. As he himself wrote about Euryanthe : ‘It is a purely dramatic work, which depends for its success solely on the cooperation of the sister arts, and is certain to lose its effect if deprived of their assistance.’" Now, what has this to do with chamber music? The answer is - very little, and, in fact, Weber composed very little chamber music. Excepting his works for solo instrument with piano accompaniment, of which there are six violin sonatas, Weber produced only three chamber music works - The Piano Quartet op 18 (1809) which he titled "Grand Quatour", the

Brief biography: Carl Maria von Weber, known as the Father of German Romanticism. He was part of the merging of classisism and romanticism during the times of Beethoven and Schubert . He studied in Salzburg, Munich, and Vienna. In 1804, he became the Kapellmeister at Breslau and worked at various locations composing concerts and operas between 1806-1813. After motivation from his friends and the successes of his compositions, he became the opera director in Prague from 1813-1816. While in Prague, Carl Maria von Weber revamped the theatre's operations and formed a core for the German company. He focused on works for the company that would keep with the German operatic tradition. He was appointed as the Royal Saxon Kapellmeister at Dresden due to the success of his opera, After realizing his declining health, Carl Maria von Weber composed

Introduction (born Eutin, ?18 November 1786; died London, 5 June 1826). Abu Hassan ), Prague and Berlin, he settled down as opera director in Prague (1813-16). There he systematically reorganized the theatre's operations and built up the nucleus of a German company, concentrating on works, mostly French, that offered an example for the development of a German operatic tradition. But his searching reforms (extending to scenery, lighting, orchestral seating, rehearsal schedules and salaries) led to resentment. Not until his appointment as Royal Saxon Kapellmeister at Dresden (1817) and the unprecedented triumph of (1821) in Berlin and throughout Germany did his championship of a true German opera win popular support. Official opposition continued, both from the Italian opera establishment in Dresden and from Spontini in Berlin; Weber answered critics with the grand heroic opera Euryanthe (1823, Vienna). His rapidly deteriorating health and his concem to provide for his family induced him to accept the invitation to write an English opera for London; he produced

    Carl Maria Von Weber
Carl Maria von Weber has rightly been called the Father of German Romanticism, but it is often overlooked that he was a contemporary of Beethoven (1770-1827) and Schubert (1797-1828). Hence he was born much earlier than one always thinks; he is truly at the cross-roads of two musical currents. Although his output is tremendous over 300 works in the chronological and thematic catalogue of Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns (whose numbering should always be used instead of the completely misleading opus numbers) he was acknowledged only in the German-speaking countries for his masterpiece, his opera "Der Freischütz". In the rest of the world he was just the composer of three overtures (Freischütz, Euryanthe, Oberon) and at best one had heard his piano rondo "Invitation to the Waltz", especially in its ballet adaptation as Le Spectre de la Rose. In relatively recent years, however, he has also come to the fore with his many concertos and concertante works, his songs, and his piano pieces - but somehow or other his symphonies have lagged sadly behind. Weber was appointed Kapellmeister in Breslau in 1804 at the amazingly early age of seventeen-and-a-half. But even at this age he knew his own mind, as he did later in Dresden: he knew exactly how he wanted the music to be played and the orchestra to be seated - in other words, no kow-towing to dear old routine.
