Sir William Turner Walton OM March 29 March 8 ) was a British composer and conductor His style was influenced by the works of Stravinsky Prokofiev and jazz , and is characterized by rhythmic vitality, bittersweet harmony , sweeping Romantic melody and brilliant orchestration . His output includes orchestral and choral works, chamber music and ceremonial music, as well as notable film scores . His earliest works, especially Edith Sitwell 's Fa§ade brought him notoriety as a modernist, but it was with orchestral symphonic works and the oratorio Belshazzar's Feast that he gained international recognition.
He was knighted in 1951, and was admitted to the Order of Merit in 1967. He died in Ischia Italy , where he had settled in 1949.

William Walton
Walton was a maverick who relished his individuality, spurned his country by choosing to live on the idyllic island of Ischia, and yet was Elgar's natural successor as the voice of the British establishment in music. His bubbling exuberance and natural sense of humour were never far below the surface in whatever he wrote, and his outstanding ear for colour was demonstrated again and again.

change Early years
Walton’s family were musical but they had very little money. Both his parents sang, and Walton sang in the local church choir. His father would hit him if he made a mistake. This may be why in later life he was so careful about every note he wrote. At the age of ten he joined the choir of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford . He learned the piano and violin . He was only 16 years when he went to Oxford University where he was at Christ Church, Oxford . Most of what he knew about composing he taught himself. He studied the scores of works by Stravinsky Debussy Sibelius and others. He had some lessons from Hugh Allen , the cathedral organist. At Oxford Walton became friends with two poets:

Sir William Turner Walton, O.M. Welcome to the Internet's premier resource dedicated to the life and works of William Walton (1902 1983). In the late 1920s and '30s, Walton was considered the most important English composer of his generation, with a unique style built on Romantic passion, Classical structure, sweeping melody, dissonant yet tonal harmony, jazz-infused rhythmic vitality, and brilliant orchestration. Walton's compositions from these decades—most notably the chamber entertainment Façade , the Viola Concerto , the cantata Belshazzar's Feast , the Symphony No. 1 , and the Violin Concerto —have never left the standard repertory. Walton's works composed after World War II—including the String Quartet in A minor , the tragic opera Troilus and Cressida , the Cello Concerto , the Symphony No. 2 , and the orchestral Variations on a Theme by Hindemith —were not as well received at the time, but in recent decades many have taken their rightful place as masterworks of the mid-twentieth century. Walton is also considered among the greatest of English film composers, including a noteworthy score to Henry V . An eminently congenial man, Walton lived the last half of his life on the tranquil Mediterranean island of Ischia. This website is intended as a monument to one of the twentieth century's great composers.

    WALTON, WILLIAM BIOGRAPHY
William Walton represents a period in English music between Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten. After a period as a chorister at Christ Church, Oxford, he later failed to complete his graduate studies and was for a time dependent on the patronage and encouragement of the Sitwell family. He spent his later years on the island of Ischia. Orchestral Music Choral Works The oratorio Belshazzar's Feast, its biblical text adapted by Osbert Sitwell, remains an imposing element in English choral repertoire.
