I believe in God, Mozart and Beethoven, and likewise their disciples and apostles; - I believe in the Holy Spirit and the truth of the one, indivisible Art; - I believe that this Art proceeds from God, and lives within the hearts of all illumined men; - I believe that he who once has bathed in the sublime delights of this high Art, is consecrate to Her for ever, and never can deny Her; - I believe that through Art all men are saved.

I wanted to leave a note this morning when I first saw these but I had to leave for work. (I can't believe no one else left a comment.)
Seeing this makes me feel young again. It stirs my old anti-war sentiments to see these videos nested together. Good going!
A lot of movies that aim to glorify war in fact do exactly the opposite, showing how base and ugly the whole enterprise really is. The juxtaposition of Samuel Barber's achingly sad Adagio for Strings over combat scenes in Platoon always brings me to tears if I watch for a few minutes. I cannot hear the word napalm without recalling that timeless photo from Vietnam of the little girl, screaming in terror, burning with napalm, naked as she ran toward the camera. Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Founder Len Mullenger THE GREAT COMPOSERS An Occasional series by Dr David C. F. Wright
based on his article What makes a great composer? WAGNER This article was originally written in 1965, my first essay about a composer. It depends heavily on the writings of others and there is nothing new in what I say. Any mistakes are mine, though. However, I have updated it for the series on this website as part of the project to introduce great composers. I said it was the greatest of all operas and, today, I still believe that passionately. I loved the second act and could sing most of it without the music although my German was suspect. The Liebestod is the most sublime music I know. And what a way to end an opera. The only comparison is the end of Verdi's Aida with the contralto chanting out those glorious D flats. The most frequently comment about Wagner's music is, "There are some great moments but long half hours." I can see that point but the expectation of the next tremendous moment is worth the wait and can afford edge-of-the-seat excitement.

German romantic composer noted chiefly for his inventio of the music drama. His cycle of four such dramas The Ring of the Nubelung was produced at his own theatre in Bayreuth in 1876. His other operas include (1845 revised 1861), Tristan and Isolde (1865), and Parsifal This teaching [of the sinfulness of murdering and living upon our fellow beings] was the result of a deep metaphysical recognition of a truth; and, if the Brahman has brought to us the consciousness of the most manifold phenomenon of the living world, with it is awakened the consciousness that the sacrifice of one of our near kin is, in a manner, the slaughter of one of ourselves; that the non-human animal is separated from man only by the degree of mental endowment, that it has the faculties of pleasure and pain, has the same desire for life as the most reason-endowed portion of mankind. - Art and Religion Human dignity begins to assert itself only at a point where man is distinguishable from the beast by pity for it. -

Plot
Prologue Three Norns, daughters of Erda, recount their knowledge again: Wotan has felled the withered World ash-tree, from which he once cut his spear, and had it taken to the pyre around Valhalla. Here he awaits his end - his power has expired because Siegfried has destroyed the god's spear. But the rope with which the Norns want to hold everything together snaps. Their wisdom is at an end. Siegfried and Br¼nnhilde appear unmoved by the imminent downfall and delight in the rapture of their love. Br¼nnhilde sends her hero to seek new adventures. Siegfried leaves her the Ring as a love token. Br¼nnhilde too falls under the spell of the cursed object.
Act 1 The Gibichungs Gunther and Gutrune learn from their half-brother Hagen, Alberich's son, of the most beautiful woman and the strongest man in the world: Br¼nnhilde and Siegfried. Winning them as husband and wife could considerably enhance the fame of the siblings for their standing suffers from the fact that they are unmarried. Siegfried's journey on the Rhine takes him to the Hall of the Gibichungs. Only he could pass through the flames protecting Br¼nnhilde and win her for Gunther; but to fall in love with Gutrune, he first has to forget all the other women he has known. A drugged potion makes Siegfried forget and inflames his love for Gutrune. To help her brother find a worthy wife, he offers to capture Br¼nnhilde for Gunther. Having sworn to be blood brothers, Siegfried and Gunther make their way to Br¼nnhilde. She is waiting longingly for her hero to return when her sister Waltraute unexpectedly appears. Acting against Wotan who has expressly forbidden her to come, she urges her sister to return the Ring to the Rhinemaidens. Only this can avert the destruction of the gods but Br¼nnhilde refuses to surrender Siegfried's love token.

May 22, 2003 May 22nd Every year, as May 22nd approaches, I give the day some special thought. It is a mystical day for me, the birthday of the composer who, more than any other person living or dead, inspired me and shaped me into the person I am today (for better or worse). The very name Richard Wagner tends to arouse strong emotions in people. Some equate him and his creations with Nazism (which is unfair) and with anti-Semitism (which is, to a large extent, fair). Others complain that his music is boring, over-long, over-wrought and "heavy." On the opposite end, his works have inspired a fanatical loyalty that is literally unprecedented in all of art. There are few if any other classical composers or artists to have entire cultural movements bearing their names. The word "Wagnerian" is applied to theater, music, paintings, literature, poetry, philosophy and even behaviour. Most major cities have Wagner Societies, groups of unashamed fanatics who meet monthly to hear lectures on their hero and exchange opinions. Infinite numbers of books have been written about him, and every year there are more and more. And fanatics like me snap them up with an unquenchable curiosity. No, there is truly nothing else quite like it.

This highly original book draws on narrative and film theory, psychoanalysis, and musicology to explore the relationship between aesthetics and anti-Semitism in two controversial landmarks in German culture. David Levin argues that Richard Wagner's opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen and Fritz Lang's 1920s film Die Nibelungen creatively exploit contrasts between good and bad aesthetics to address the question of what is German and what is not. He shows that each work associates a villainous character, portrayed as non-Germanic and Jewish, with the sometimes dramatically awkward act of narration. For both Wagner and Lang, narrationor, in cinematic terms, visual presentationpossesses a typically Jewish potential for manipulation and control. Consistent with this view, Levin shows, the Germanic hero Siegfried is killed in each work by virtue of his unwitting adoption of a narrative role. Levin begins with an explanation of the book's theoretical foundations and then applies these theories to close readings of, in turn, Wagner's cycle and Lang's film. He concludes by tracing how Germans have dealt with the Nibelungen myths in the wake of the Second World War, paying special attention to Michael Verhoeven's 1989 film

by Douwe Draaisma With each click of the self-timer, the Wagners demonstrated clearly that the aging process does not follow the even rhythm of the calendar
We must forgive our memory for yet another reason. It finds it easier to determine what has changed than to tell what has stayed the same. The people we have around us every day change as quickly or slowly as everyone else, but thanks to our daily contacts with them their changes are played out on a scale that makes them seem to stand still. It is unfair to blame our memory for throwing away editions when, on the face of it, the latest imprint differs in no way from the preceding one. Fifteen years later the external circumstances have changed drastically. On a map of Europe, which was also shown on the 1914 photograph, the successful advance of German troops is recorded. Although many provisions now needed coupons, as did clothing, paraffin and coal, the Wagners were still able to provide a well-stocked Christmas table, with a cake, apples, sausages and drinks. With the somewhat curious sense of humor that crops up now and then in other photographs as well they have hung a small card with inscription "Famine" close to the basket of eggs and the platter of sausages. Two years later in 1917 the deprivations of the war have hit even the Wagners' living room. The reason why they are wearing winter coats has been written underneath: "coal shortage." The map with German troop movements has gone. No candles have been lit on the Christmas tree. Richard is wearing the slippers that were among the Christmas presents a year earlier. Grey streaks in his hair appear for the first time. The Christmas presents are dominated by a "hay box" with which food could be prepared with a minimum of fuel.

  • Colonial breeding in birds and fishes

Research Summary 12: 342-347). We are examining the idea that colonies and other social aggregations are by-products of the choices by individuals of the commodities necessary for reproduction such as mates and habitat. Specifically, my main focus is the hidden lek hypothesis, which predicts that when monogamous females seek extra-pair copulations, males aggregate by the same mechanisms that produce leks. I am testing the hidden lek hypothesis in several species. In lapwings, a shorebird, I am working with Dr. Donald Blomqvist to determine whether less attractive males are drawn to more attractive males to obtain mates. This is a prediction that was derived from purple martins, a swallow, in which I am conducting a colony formation experiment with Dr. Malcolm Schug. Because many fish species are monogamous and colonial like many birds, my students and I am now using the acquarium facilities at the institute to design colony formation experiments in cichlid fishes.

Apologies for the quality of the video captures.... We've had to keep it hush-hush up to now, but when Wagner attended the Olympics last year, that wasn't the only reason he was in Atlanta. He also visited the Cartoon Network studios to be interviewed for the Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast show. How'd it go? Well, they spent most of the interview time making fun of his name, so Wagner pretty much clammed up. (Maybe it's payback for an interview I did a while back, who knows? I know I didn't make any name jokes when we interviewed Space Ghost for Planet Magazine a couple years ago.) But the toontown folks did take some nice pix of the Old Boy, not that you can tell from my botched-up video captures. Plus I got an advance video and a copy of the script they used, both of which will be duly deposited in the Wagner Archives. Cartoon Network hasn't yet said when the episode will air, so please don't ask me. You'll hear when I do. So, without further introfuscation, here's the script and some video captures from:
