RICHARD WAGNER: Born Leipzig 22 May 1813 Died Venice 13 February 1883
Richard Wagner is perhaps the most controversial composer who ever lived. He believed it was his destiny to create the "Work of Art of the Future". This he would achieve by uniting the most inexhaustibly expressive art with what he thought to be the most perfect: music with drama. Thus, he would be composer-poet/dramatist, and in the process create the music of the future as well.
It was his life ambition to create a "Gesamtkunstwerk"

Wagner was a remarkable innovator both in harmony and in the structure of his work, creating his own version of the Gesamtkunstwerk, dramatic compositions in which the arts were brought together into a single unity. As a man he was prepared to sacrifice his family and friends in the cause of his own music and his overt anti-semitism has attracted unwelcome attention to ideas that are remote from his real work as a musician. In the later part of his career Wagner enjoyed the support of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was finally able to establish his own theatre and festival at the Bavarian town of Bayreuth. He developed the use of the Leitmotiv (leading motif) as a principle of musical unity, his dramatic musical structure depending on the interweaving of melodies or fragments of melody associated with characters, incidents or ideas in the drama. His Prelude to the love tragedy Tristan und Isolde led to a new world of harmony. Richard Wagner Works Wagner won his first operatic success in Dresden with the opera Rienzi, based on a novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

The Aryan Myth: Richard Wagner Richard Wagner was the most politically incorrect composer in history and also was one of the worst anti-Semites of the 19th Century. The German composer's behavior and religious views were off the charts of civilized society. In many ways he was a monster. Wagner believed that all Jews should be burned up.
Wagner lost no opportunity, year in and year out, of fretting the life out of his Jewish friends and collaborators about their Judaism. When Levi, a Jewish conductor, conducted the world premiere of his opera, Wagner remarked that if he were playing in the orchestra he wouldn't like to be directed by a Jew. Richard Wagner was the unofficial court composer of the Third Reich. Adolf Hitler said that "Whoever wants to understand National Socialistic Germany must know Wagner." Hitler's appropriation of the Bayreuth Wagner Festival was to serve his own cultural propaganda purposes. Wagner was a cultural hero for Hitler and his Nazis. The strains of Wagner were played during the Nazis' book-burning ceremonies and when concentration camp prisoners were about to be put to death. Nazi Germany's main defense fortification was called the "Siegfried Line," after the mythic hero in Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung

    About
Richard Wagner's idea for "Gesamtkunstwerk" (literally "total artwork") demonstrates the scale on which the German composer operated: with 18-hour operatic cycles, orchestras that were more powerful than any ever assembled, and librettos examining the tragedy and heroism of existence, his legacy is utterly titanic. Born in 1813, Wagner was introduced to the theater by his stepfather and, after brief musical training, began composing operas. Dissonant chromaticism and expansive orchestral technique resulted in mid-career triumphs including 1845's

Biography
Wilhelm Richard Wagner (22 May 1813, Leipzig; 13 February 1883, Venice) was a German composer, conductor, music theorist, and essayist, primarily known for his operas (or "music dramas" as they were later called). Unlike most other great opera composers, Wagner always wrote the scenario and libretto for his works himself. Wagner's compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their contrapuntal texture, rich chromaticism, harmonies and orchestration, and elaborate use of leitmotifs: musical themes associated with specific characters, locales, or plot elements. Wagner pioneered advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, which greatly influenced the development of European classical music. He transformed musical thought through his idea of Gesamtkunstwerk ("total artwork"), the synthesis of all the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, epitomized by his monumental four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876). Wagner even went so far as to build his own opera house to try to stage these works as he had imagined them.

As a man he was prepared to sacrifice his family and friends in the cause of his own music and his overt anti-semitism has attracted unwelcome attention to ideas that are remote from his real work as a musician. His Prelude to the love tragedy Tristan und Isolde led to a new world of harmony. Orchestral Music Songs At the root of Wagner's drama of forbidden love, Tristan und Isolde, was his own affair with Matilde Wesendonk, wife of a banker upon whose support he relied during years of exile in Switzerland. The five Wesendonk-Lieder are settings of verses by Matilde Wesendonk.
