Wilhelm Richard Wagner 22 May Leipzig 13 February Venice ) was a German composer conductor music theorist , and essayist , primarily known for his operas (or " music dramas " as they were later called). Unlike most other great opera composers, Wagner always wrote the scenario and libretto for his works himself. Wagner's compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their contrapuntal texture , rich chromaticism harmonies and orchestration , and elaborate use of leitmotifs : musical themes associated with specific characters, locales, or plot elements. Wagner pioneered advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, which greatly influenced the development of European classical music He transformed musical thought through his idea of Gesamtkunstwerk ("total artwork"), the synthesis of all the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, epitomized by his monumental four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876). Wagner even went so far as to build his own

RICHARD WAGNER BIOGRAPHY Richard Wagner was born on May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany. Wagner's childhood was spent in a theatrical home. After listening to Beethoven, Wagner decided to become a composer.
In 1834, Wagner became the music director of an opera company in Madeburg. He began concentrating his compositions on operas. In 1835, Wagner began work on his first major opera "Rienzi", but soon had to flee to Prussia because of oustanding debts he could not pay. He ended up in France, where things got so bad, he actually spent some weeks in a debtor's prison. Wagner was introduced by a German friend to the stories of Tannhauser and Lohengrin. From this, Wagner developed an interest in Mythology.
One of the operas from Wagner's "The Ring" is "Die Walkure" which is about a woman, Sieglinde who shelters a warrior who becomes her lover, Siegmund (who later on turns out to be her brother). Brunnhilde, the Valkryie (the helper of the Gods and daughter of the God Wotan) helps Siegmund escape against Wotan's wishes. Wotan intervenes and kills Siegmund and punishes Brünnhilde by putting her to sleep on a rock surrounded by fire. The opera ends with Wotan stating that only a hero would be able to pass through the fire to rescue her and become her husband.

German composer. His childhood was divided between Dresden and Leipzig, where he had his first composition lessons; his teacher refused payment because of his talent. His first opera, The Fairies (1834), was followed by The Ban on Love (1836); the premiere performance was so unprepared that the event was a fiasco, and he henceforth determined not to settle for modest productions. The success of Rienzi (1840) led him to be more adventurous in The Flying Dutchman (1843) and even more so in G.W.F. Hegel ) that music had reached a limit after Ludwig van Beethoven Gesamtkunstwerk Lohengrin produced. He had begun his most ambitious work, The Ring of the Nibelung , a four-opera cycle. The need for large-scale unity brought him to the concept of the leitmotiv . He ceased work on the Ring 's third opera, Siegfried , in the throes of an adulterous love with Mathilde Wesendonk and wrote an opera of forbidden love, Tristan und Isolde (1859), which also seemed to break the bonds of tonality. He published the

He also worked on the text and music of an opera on the 'Flying Dutchman' legend; but in 1842 Rienzi , a large-scale opera with a political theme set in imperial Rome, was accepted for Dresden and Wagner went there for its highly successful premiere. Its theme reflects something of Wagner's own politics (he was involved in the semi-revolutionary, intellectual 'Young Germany' movement).

Introduction
Richard Wagner
(1813-1883) who regarded himself as "the most German of men", "the German spirit" is not only known because of his 13 operas and numerous other compositions but also because of his inevitable influence on our understanding of German culture and history. He has been classified as an anarchist and a socialist and, simultaneously, as a proto-fascist and nationalist, as a vegetarian and an antisemite... In fact, his name has appeared in connection to almost all major trends in German history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Besides his activity as a composer and a librettist Wagner wrote an astonishing number of books and articles (this link includes some complete works as hypertext), in fact about 230 titles. The literary spectrum ranges from theories of opera to political programs. You may catch some of his political ideas from the quotations I have chosen. You may also read what contemporaries and later scholars have written about him In addition to these activities Wagner wrote about 10.000 letters Richard Wagner is undoubtedly one of the leading figures of the 19th century. Already at his time, he was a source of debate and controversy. When Wagner died in 1883, over 10.000 books and articles were written about him. The amount of research has multiplied after his death. I have included a list of

var sc_project=510389; var sc_partition=3; var sc_invisible=1; Richard Wagner's life journeys from the heights of Romanticism to the movement's supreme crisis, which he himself orchestrated. His musical language overturned all the accepted laws of harmony as it pointed to the beginnings of the post-Romantic period and beyond. His work is without a doubt one of the pillars on which Western music rests. Wagner's life begins in 1813... Richard Wagner's musical legacy rests with only thirteen completed stage works. Of these, ten of them have remained in the repertory of all major opera houses around the world, and represent some of the most loved, most often performed, and innovative works created by any composer in the 19th century. Click the link below to find complete information about all of Wagner's operas, including Der Ring des Nibelungen Tristan und Isolde , and Parsifal. The Bayreuth festival is the oldest of the European summer events. This yearly ritual, in this small Bavarian city, started in 1876, when Wagner himself had the theater the Festspielhaus built to his specifications in order to present his four part music drama

    Born: Leipzig, May 22, 1813
    Died: Venice, February 13, 1883
From an early age, Wagner had been interested in theater, drama, verse, and acting. While in his teens he became interested in music, and began studying and composing. His greatest inspiration came from the operatic reforms and ideas of Gluck , and from the German operas of Carl Maria von Weber . By the age of twenty-two, he had finished his first opera and had begun to make notes for his autobiography. Convinced of his greatness, he continued composing and conducting, but meeting with little success. Eventually he became involved with the Dresden revolutionary uprising of 1849, the outcome of which made him a wanted political criminal, and he fled to Switzerland. During this time Wagner was continually composing operas and finding his mature style. He envisioned the creation of the "total art work": a conception of a

The greatest composer of German opera, Richard Wagner was the youngest of nine children of Friedrich and Johanna Wagner. His father, a police registrar, died 6 months after Wagner was born, and his mother was remarried the following year to Ludwig Geyer, an actor and portrait painter, who moved the family to Dresden. Geyer died in 1821, and in 1827 the family returned to Leipzig.
Wagner was attracted to the theater at an early age. His first creative effort was a spoken tragedy, Leubald and Adelaide (1828), which was heavily influenced by Shakespeare and Goethe. He decided at once, however, that he must also write music, and he proceeded to teach himself the rudiments of composition, supplementing them with the study of scores. His formal training was briefabout 6 months in 1831-32 with the Leipzig cantor C. T. Weinlig. During the 1830s, Wagner held a series of conducting posts with small theatrical companies, and he wrote two operas, Die Feen (The Fairies, 1834) and
