Baroque Composer and Violinist

Antonio Vivaldi's brief biography - his life and works. Famous for violin concertos 'Le Quattro Stagione' (The Four Seasons).
Il Prete Rosso (Red Priest) because of his flaming hair color. Vivaldi's The Four Seasons Le Quattro Stagione ) is enormously popular. Several of his concertos were transcribed by Johann Sebastian Bach. At the age of 15, Vivaldi was trained for the priesthood and ordained in 1703, at the same time he developed his own skills on the violin. He also became the Maesto di Violino at the Pio Ospedale della Pita, an orphanage for girls in Venice, where music played an integral part in the curriculum. The regular concerts given by the orchestra of the hospice were extremely popular. But soon in 1705, after his ordination he ceased to say Mass claiming health reasons and was permitted to stay at home. He suffered from chest complaints possibly asthma or angina. Notably, this was to cause him problems later on when in 1737, a production of one of his operas was banned by the religious authorities, saying that the composer was a non-practising priest, aside from another allegation that he had a relationship with a female singer.

    Antonio Vivaldi: Baroque composer
Antonio Vivaldi the Baroque composer's life and works are captured in this brief article.
Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice on March fourth, 1678. His first job was as a priest – he was ordained in 1703, at 25. However, due to various physical complaints (he talked about tightness in his chest), he left the church after only a year. He had become a priest against his own will, because his family was poor and the training was free. Vivaldi was mainly an opera writer. He is also famous, however, for his many concertos, especially the favored Four Seasons. Many of such pieces that he wrote early in his career (early 1700’s) were for an ‘orphanage,’ where he was the violin teacher. This orphanage was not really an orphanage at all, but a home for daughters of noblemen and their mistresses. These concertos which Vivaldi wrote for them were actually playing exercises for the talented young musicians. In 1717, he lived in Mantua in order to provide operas, cantatas, and some concert music to Landgrave Philips van Hessen-Darmstadt. His official title was Chamber Kapellmeister of the court. In 1720 he moved back to Venice. It was at this time that he met Anna Giraud, who from then on lived with him. He denied that she was anything more than a friend. Her sister, Paolina also lived with them. Vivaldi composed quite a bit. In only a month he composed three operas for two different cities – Florence and Venice. He was also writing two concertos a month, for which he received one ducat each. These concertos were sent to Ospedale della Dieta, with whom he’d made a deal. He had agreed to send the two concertos each month, and his presence was then not required. These concertos were very successful, especially in France. This is shown because he did a bit of work for French royalty, such as his serenade La Sena Festeggiante, which was written for Louis XV.

    - (b Venice, 1678; d Vienna, 1741)
Italian composer and violinist. Son of violinist in orchestra of St. Mark's, Venice, under Legrenzi. Taught by father. Entered church, becoming priest 1703, though after 2 years never said Mass because of congenital chest complaint. Taught violin at orphanage (Ospedale della Pietà) from 1703 and gave recitals. Published trio sonatas, Opus 1, 1705 and violin sonatas, Opus 2, 1709. First opera, Ottone in villa , produced Vincenza 1713; first Venetian opera, Orlando finto pazzo , 1714. Was also operatic impressario in Venice and conducted and played violin in opera performances. Spent 3 years in service of Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt in Mantua, probably 1719-1721. Between 1721 and 1725, wrote operas for Mantua, Vicenza, Milan, and Rome. His famous Opus 8, included Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons), was published 1725. By this time, Vivaldi was known and admired throughout Europe. In 1734, first collaborated with librettist Goldoni (1709-1793). In 1737, production of a new Vivaldi opera at Ferrara was forbidden by papal authorities on ground that Vivaldi was a priest who did not say Mass and had a relationship with a woman singer. In 1738, visited Amsterdam, where his music had been published since 1711, for royal theatre centenary celebrations - his reputation stood higher in France, Holland, and England in his lifetime than it did in Venice. Despite intermittent disputes over the years, Vivaldi was still maestro at the Pietà and was still writing cantatas for performance there in 1740. In 1741, he decided to leave Venice for Vienna, presumably in search of some court appointment, but died there, being buried in a pauper's grave.
