Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Venice, 4 March 1678; died Vienna, 28 July 1741). He was the son of a professional violinist who played at St. Mark's and may have been involved in operatic management. Vivaldi was trained for the priesthood and ordained in 1703 but soon after his ordination ceased to say Mass. he claimed this was because of his unsure health (he is known to have suffered from chest complaints, possibly asthma or angina). In 1703 he was appointed maestro di violino maestro de' concerti maestro di cappella , 1735-8; even after then he supplied concertos and directed performances on special occasions. Vivaldi's reputation had begun to grow with his first publications: trio sonatas (probably 1703-5), violin sonatas (1709) and especially his 12 concertos L'estro armonico op.3 (1711). These, containing some of his finest concertos, were issued in Amsterdam and widely circulated in northern Europe; this prompted visiting musicians to seek him out in Venice and in some cases commission works from him (notably for the Dresden court). Bach transcribed five op.3 concertos for keyboard, and many German composers imitated his style. He published two further sets of sonatas and seven more of concertos, including

BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Antonio Vivaldi Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice on March 4th, 1678. Though ordained a priest in 1703, according to his own account, within a year of being ordained Vivaldi no longer wished to celebrate mass because of physical complaints ("tightness of the chest") which pointed to angina pectoris, asthmatic bronchitis, or a nervous disorder. It is also possible that Vivaldi was simulating illness - there is a story that he sometimes left the altar in order to quickly jot down a musical idea in the sacristy.... In any event he had become a priest against his own will, perhaps because in his day training for the priesthood was often the only possible way for a poor family to obtain free schooling. (see illustration) was thus well endowed by the "anonymous" fathers; its furnishings bordered on the opulent, the young ladies were well looked-after, and the musical standards among the highest in Venice. Many of Vivaldi's concerti were indeed exercises which he would play with his many talented pupils. Vivaldi's relationship with the Ospedale began right after his ordination in 1703, when he was named as violin teacher there. Until 1709, Vivaldi's appointment was renewed every year and again after 1711. Between 1709 and 1711 Vivaldi was not attached to the Ospedale. Perhaps in this period he was already working for the Teatro Sant' Angelo, an opera theater. He also remained active as a composer - in 1711 twelve concertos he had written were published in Amsterdam by the music publisher Estienne Roger under the title

The Italian composer and violinist Antonio Vivaldi (b. Venice, Mar. 4, 1678, d. July, buried July 28, 1741), was a major figure in baroque music and exercised a considerable influence on the development of the concerto. He entered the priesthood, and because of his red hair he was known as "The Red Priest." From 1704 to 1740 he was teacher, conductor, and composer for the Ospedale della Pietà, a Venetian conservatory and orphanage for girls whose musical performances were famous. He also traveled widely, producing operas in various European cities. His reputation diminished in later years, and he died destitute in Vienna. MIDI FILE - Concerto (complete) for 2 trumpets, strings and b.c. Vivaldi's music was forgotten for a century after his death but began to arouse interest with the discovery of its influence on J. S. Bach , who arranged a number of Vivaldi's concertos for keyboard. Large quantities of his works have been found since the 1920s, and they are now widely published, performed, and recorded.

    VIVALDI, ANTONIO BIOGRAPHY
Church Music The surviving church music of Vivaldi includes the well known Gloria, in addition to a number of settings of psalms and motets. Operas None of the fifty odd operas of Vivaldi remain in standard repertoire. Concertos The most famous of all Vivaldi's concertos are I quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons), characteristic compositions to which the composer attached explanatory programmatic sonnets. These four concertos, for solo violin, string orchestra and harpsichord, form part of a collection Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'invenzione (The Contest of Harmony and Invention), one of seven collections of such compositions published in the composer's lifetime. In addition to concertos for solo violin, Vivaldi also wrote concertos for many other solo instruments, including the flute, oboe, bassoon, cello and viola d'amore, and for groups of solo instruments. Chamber Music Vivaldi wrote a number of sonatas and trio sonatas, many of them designed for one or two violins and basso continuo. He also wrote a series of chamber concertos, compositions similar in approach to the solo and multiple concertos, but scored for smaller groups of instruments.

I suppose I will always think of Nigel Kennedy whenever I hear any one of Antonio Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons'. The character of the virtuoso violinist almost took over his joyous playing of these wonderful pieces, and I think I shall be forever grateful to him for bringing Vivaldi's music so happily to my attention. His unique interpretation of the music was acclaimed for its exuberance and vitality, and brought it to a much wider public. Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678, and was the son of a barber who turned violinist to play in an orchestra. Taught to play the violin by his father, he was nevertheless trained for the priesthood, but it does not seem to have been a calling, and his enthusiasm for such a career seems doubtful. He was not ordained until he was twenty five years of age, but very soon gave up saying mass, allegedly because of a chronic chest complaint. He claimed that the incense aggravated his asthma. Even so he became known by the nick name of 'The Red Priest' because of his flame coloured hair. But he was enthusiastic about music and obtained a position as a violin teacher at the Ospedale della Pieta, an orphanage for girls in Venice. Music lovers from all over Europe came to hear the excellent all girls orchestra that he trained and directed.

Except for an interim appointment (ca. 1719- 1723) as Maestro di cappella to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, then resident in Mantua, Vivaldi was employed throughout his career as a musician at the Seminario musicale dell' Ospedale della pietà in Venice (1703-1740). Vivaldi composed more that 40 operas oratorios , numerous secular cantatas , Vespers, hundreds of concerti grossi and solo concerti and chamber music . Vivaldi's tendency to confuse novelty of technique with musical content was more than offset by his masterful incorporation of formal elements into the evolving concerto form. While in Weimar , Bach's instrumental works came under the influence of Vivaldi's Italian concerto. Later, through the work of Pisendel (student of Vivaldi 1716-1717) and the Vivaldi cult in Dresden, Bach's work acquired an even more Italian flair. Johann Sebastian arranged Vivaldi concerti for the organ, several for the clavier , and one for four clavier and string quartet . It is likely that Antonio Vivaldi exercised more of an influence over Bach's instrumental style than any other composer.

Translated by Kirk McElhearn When musicologist Marc Pincherle decided to write his doctoral thesis on Vivaldi in 1913, his project could almost have been considered musical archaeology. Only a few works by this forgotten composer were known; they came from printed collections that had been little studied and rarely played. These vestiges justified Vivaldi’s appearance in books on the history of music, where he was panned with brief statements and rash comments by Gerber, Hawkins, Burney and Orloff, German and English historians and musicologists who judged works that they had neither studied nor heard, as Stravinsky did later. But the few concertos that had been preserved seemed far too limited to justify devoting this sort of scholarly research to Vivaldi. The burial of the man Venetians had called the Red Priest was almost complete. Biography Work catalogue Discography Goldberg Articles ... info@goldberg-magazine.com

by Daryl Lee Affectionately known as Il Prete Rosso (the Red Priest) because of his flaming red hair, Vivaldi was born to a barber-turned-violinist in the St. Mark's orchestra in Venice. He trained for the priesthood, to which he was ordained at the age of 25, but quickly abandoned his liturgical responsibilities to become violin master at a well-funded Venetian girls' orphanage. His relationship with the orphanage continued for the rest of his life, including several full-time posts of increasing influence. When away from the orphanage pursuing his opera career, he continued to support the orphanage by supplying them with original compositions for their repertoire. One such piece is the Gloria (actually one of two Glorias) to be performed by the MOS in its 2004 Christmas Concert Vivaldi's creativity is exhibited by both his originality and his productivity. In the course of producing approximately 550 concerti, an unknown number of operas (22 of which have survived), and about 60 choral works, he created several forms that served as models for contemporaries and followers, not the least of which was J. S. Bach. For instance, he pioneered the three-movement structure, sandwiching a slow movement between two fast ones. Not only was his creativity musical, but it also extended into the actual publishing realm. Rather than have his work published in Italy, he sent it north to a Dutch printer, because this printer used engraved plates rather than moveable type. The result was a page of higher quality, and had the side effect of introducing Vivaldi to Northern Europe, broadening his influence.

ANTONIO VIVALDI At the end of 1717 Vivaldi moved to Mantua for two years in order to take up his post as Chamber Capellmeister at the court of Landgrave Philips van Hessen-Darmstadt. His task there was to provide operas, cantatas, and perhaps concert music, too. Here he made the acquaintance of the singer Anna Giraud (or Giro), who moved in to live with him, and they stayed together until Vivaldi's death. Vivaldi also wrote works on commission from foreign rulers, such as the French king, Louis XV - the serenade La Sena festeggiante (Festival on the Seine), for example. This work cannot be dated precisely, but it was certainly written after 1720. In Rome Vivaldi found a patron in the person of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, a great music lover, who earlier had been the patron of Arcangelo Corelli. And if we can believe Vivaldi himself, the Pope asked him to come and play the violin for him at a private audience. In 1725 the publication Il Cimento dell' Armenia e dell'invenzione (The trial of harmony and invention), opus 8, appeared in Amsterdam. This consisted of twelve concertos, seven of which were descriptive: The Four Seasons, Storm at Sea, Pleasure

Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi is an all-female ensemble of singers and players which aims to recreate the sound of Vivaldi's Figlie di Choro, those foundlings at Venice's Ospedale della Pietà who performed at Mass and Vespers from behind grilles in the high choir lofts or "cantorie". It reflects the age range and vocal range of Vivaldi's musicians, with women aged 14 to 60+, some singing tenor and bass, and is based on the work of Vivaldi researcher Micky White, who lives at La Pietà, where the composer spent much of his career. Her findings give us a comprehensive picture of the daily life of this special institution during the 18th century, the heyday of its musical tradition. We even know the names and ages of the women who sang and played at specific times, together with their instruments and voices; in some cases the names of soloists are written into the music. Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi includes several past and present members of Oxford Girls' Choir Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment / Jerwood Experience During October 2007 the choir performed in Antwerp, Utrecht, London and Bristol with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk, in a programme broadcast on Netherlands Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3.

You've heard many movements of Vivaldi's Four Seasons in movies like Tin Cup, Spy Game, A View to Kill, What Lies Beneath, White Chicks, Saved!, Pacific Heights, The Other Sister... the list keeps going, but I think I've proved my point. Perhaps you've attended a wedding where Vivaldi's Four Season's was played? In most cases, you have. If you stop and listen, chances are it's playing somewhere.
