He was baptized immediately at his home by the midwife. It is not known how the life of the infant was in danger, but the immediate baptism was most likely due to his poor health or to an earthquake that shook the city that day. Vivaldi's official church baptism (at least, the rites which remained other than the actual baptism itself) did not take place until two months later. His father, Giovanni Battista, a barber before becoming a professional violinist , taught him to play violin and then toured Venice playing the violin with his young son. Italian composer. His father, Giovanni Battista, was a successful violinist and taught Antonio the instrument from an early age. From 1693 until he was ordained in 1703, Vivaldi prepared for the priesthood at S. Geminiano and S. Giovanni in Oleo; he was called "il prete rosso" (the red priest) because of his red hair. Although he remained a deeply religious man, he stopped saying Mass soon after his ordination; later in life he cited a long-term ailment as the reason for this. From September 1703 to February 1709 he was maestro di violino viole all'inglese and was responsible for acquiring and maintaining string instruments for the orchestra. By this time he had begun to establish himself as a composer: his Opus 1 trio sonatas appeared in 1705, and his Opus 2 violin sonatas were brought out in 1709. In 1711 Etienne Roger of Amsterdam published his L'estro armonico maestro de' concerti. He was also given the responsibility of writing sacred music; his oratorio Juditha triumphans was performed in November 1716. The twelve concertos of

Biography: Antonio Vivaldi was born on March 4, 1678 in Venice, Italy. Vivaldi was a violinist and composer who also became a priest in 1703. He was known as the "Red Priest" because of his red hair. He wrote hundreds of concertos, chamber works and operas in the Baroque style.
Vivaldi was not really appreciated until the mid-20th century, when there was a revival in Baroque music and Vivaldi became popular to Classical music listeners. He single-handedly developed the concerto into a form which remained mostly unchanged. The most popular piece Vivaldi wrote is the four concertos known as "I Quattro Stagioni" (The Four Seasons), written in 1723. The Four Seasons was one of the earliest examples of "Program Music" (music that evokes scenes). Vivaldi's music is different than other Baroque composers by his use of melodic invention and originality, along with an incredible amount of excitement.
Despite a prosperous life, Vivaldi became penniless in his later years. He died in Vienna, Austria on July 28, 1741 from gastric infection. Antonio Vivaldi, genius Baroque composer, was buried in a pauper's grave.

COMPOSERS
ANTONIO VIVALDI
Born: March 4, 1678. Venice, Italy
Died: July 28, 1741. Vienna, Austria
Italian composer of instrumental music and opera. He was important in the development of the concerto.

Visitors to Venice in the early eighteenth century often made a point of attending one of the regular concerts given by the orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà. Here they would hear a group of girls and young women (orphans supported by the organization) playing with "all the gracefulness and precision imaginable." The concerts would spotlight various members of the orchestra (sometimes highlighting unusual combinations of instruments) and the music would often be by the leading composer of the city, Antonio Vivaldi.
Vivaldi began serving the Ospedale in 1703, soon after being ordained a priest, and he held various positions there almost all his life. An important part of his duties was to supply concertos for the orchestra; over the course of his career he composed over five hundred concertos, both for solo instruments (principally violin) and for combinations of instruments. Although Vivaldi wrote a great deal of music in other genres, including more than fifty operas, it is his concertos that have granted him a lasting place in musical history.
The concertos that Vivaldi wrote helped define the genre in the Baroque and into the Classical era. These normally comprised three movements (fast, slow, fast); the fast movement regularly employed a ritornello form. In this form, an orchestral melody alternates with the freer sections that feature the soloist or soloists. The repetition of the ritornello provides a point of reference for the listener, allowing the soloist to stand out. It also allows the composer a greater degree of freedom in how the soloist's material is treated.

Baroque Period Composers Although Antonio Vivaldi is well known for his instrumental music, he was also very much engaged with vocal music. His earliest known opera was given in Vicenza in 1713. His father was a professional violinist who played at St. Marks. Vivaldi often traveled to Prague, Vienna, and Amsterdam to conduct his works as well as to oversee the printing of his scores. He was born on March 4th, 1678 in Venice, Italy and died on July 28th, 1741 in Venice, Italy. He was from the Baroque period. Antonio Vivaldi learned his music from his father because his dad was a professional violinist. Vivaldi was trained for the priesthood and ordained in 1703 but soon after his ordination ceased to perform mass. He claimed this was because of his unsure health (he is known to have suffered from chest complaints, possibly asthma or angina). Vivaldi influenced many other composers and many other German composers imitated his style. Although he mainly wrote concertos Vivaldi also composed operas, cantatas, oratorios, concerto grossos, and solo and trio sonatas. Three of his most famous pieces are the Four Seasons, The Hunt
