born in Rio de Janeiro in 1887, has, by virtue of both his immense output and colorful and accessible musical language,
become the most celebrated Brazilian composer of all time. His work not
only richly typifies the diverse and kaleidoscopic Brazilian scene but
also, in its abundance, originality, and vitality, provided the key which
unlocked Brazilian art music once and for all from the shackles of
European late-Romanticism.
After the death of his father in 1899, Villa-Lobos, determined to escape
the medical career planned for him by his mother, spent time playing
(probably cello and guitar) in the ad hoc musical groups which performed
and improvised in Rio's cafes, on street corners, and at parties and
weddings - the chtros. He then traveled in Brazil, absorbing musical
influences from his country's three main ethnic strands - Portuguese, African and Amerindian. This all resulted in the realization that the glorious aural amalgam which so impressed his soul was indeed the means by which concert music in Brazil would be revitalized and given a voice of its own.

  • Born in Rio de Janiero and trained first as a 'cellist, Villa-Lobos spent 1923-30 in Europe, where the compositions of Stravinsky made a great impression. His neo-classical love of J. S. Bach resulted in a series of works called the Bachianas Brasileiras in which Baroque forms were recreated with Brazilian color.
Returning to Brazil in 1930, he held a series of official teaching posts, founded the Conservatório Nacional de Canto Orfeónico, and the Brazilian Academy of Music, and tirelessly promoted music as a means to the creation of a national identity. He was a prolific composer. For more detailed information, we suggest you explore the following excellent websites which are devoted to Villa-Lobos:

    • H eitor V illa- L obos (1889-1959)

... Home Page Heitor Villa-Lobos Life The first Latin American composer to gain international fame, Villa-Lobos may be considered the founder of national music in Brazil. As a young man he travelled extensively throughout the country absorbing the varying musical traditions. After a period in Paris, he returned to his native land in 1930, where he eventually won official recognition and made a significant contribution to Brazilian music education. His varied compositions include stage-works, choral and instrumental compositions, chamber music, songs and piano music. His most popular works are written in forms he invented known as Bachianas brasileiras, which combine the styles of J. S. Bach and Brazilian musical idioms, and Chôros, inspired by the traditional street-music of Rio de Janeiro. Introduction Cantatas Other Vocal Non-Vocal ... Z Heitor Villa-Lobos (Composer, Conductor) Born: March 5, 1887 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Died: November 17, 1959. - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Life The Brazilian compose, Heitor Villa-Lobos, learned music from his father, who was a widely-read, highly-cultured amateur of music and a librarian. By the turn of the century Villa-Lobos had turned himself into a professional musician. He earned his living as a cafe musician; his instrument was the cello.
n 1905 Heitor Villa-Lobos made the first of his trips to Brazil's north-eastern states, to collect folk music. Such trips would continue in the future, though Villa-Lobos spun a web of mystery around them; his own testimony of adventures with the cannibal tribes of the North-East is not always trustworthy. Afterwards, he studied at the National Institute of Music in Rio de Janeiro, though his compositional style never conformed to any academic norms. His music remained always personal and idiosyncratic. As Villa-Lobos himself said many years later: "My music is natural, like a waterfall." Also: "One foot in the academy and you are changed for the worst!"
After another ethno-musicological trip to the Amazonian interior in 1912, Heitor Villa-Lobos returned to Rio de Janeiro. There, on November 13, 1915, he turned the city on its ear with a concert of his new music. By 1923, he had attracted enough official favour to win a government grant to study in Paris. On his return in 1930, Villa-Lobos was made director of music education in Rio de Janeiro.

    Heitor Villa-Lobos
An enormously prolific composer and a man of exuberant energy, Heitor Villa-Lobos transformed the musical life of his native Brazil and put the country on the international musical map.
His musical education was anything but academic. From an early age he learned the cello with his father, and it was always an instrument close to his heart. He also gained a virtuosic command of the guitar, on which he improvised with popular musicians in his home city, Rio de Janeiro.
Between the ages of 18 and 25, Villa-Lobos travelled all over Brazil exploring various forms of Brazilian music and collecting materials. He later entertained Parisian circles with tales of being captured by cannibal Indians, who released him unharmed only because of his musical abilities. On his return to Rio, his attempts at formal training in composition proved uncongenial to his fiery and impatient temperament, but he did study the works of the great masters while earning his living playing in cafes. He composed continuously, gaining increasing recognition, and in 1922 received an official commission for a work about World War I - his Third Symphony 'A guerra' (To War).
