The organ , yesterday and today Louis Vierne of France It was in France in fact, in the later 19th Century, that organs were first developed that could fill the role of today's symphony orchestra for the listening public. In Europe until then, as in America today, the organ was more commonly associated with the church. Organs and organ music in the time of the Enlightenment and the Revolution in the late 18th Century fell into neglect because of the skeptical and anti-clerical mood of the times. But in the middle of the 19th Century, new organs were built that were meant to appeal to the masses of people by emulating the new "symphonic" sound being developed by classical and romantic composers such as Beethoven. Even though most of them were built in great old French Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, these organs were as secular as they were sacred in inspiration (perhaps even blended the two). The greatest of these organs were built by Aristide Cavaille-Coll Cesar Franck (1822-1890) was the first composer to fully utilize the sound colors and other potentials of the new symphonic organs. His thoughful, passionate works for solo organ are his finest works, and are usually ranked (perhaps along with Vierne's or Messiaen's) as second only to Bach's in the history of the instrument. Among these was a half hour-long work entitled "Piece Symphonique" (c.1863) which, without having specifically-numbered movements, sounds and unfolds like a symphony, with its romantic, orchestral-sounding themes, classical developments, recapitulations, and stirring concluding flourishes. He was born October 8 in Poitiers and died June 2 in Paris Contents Life Music Works Organ solo ... edit Life Louis Vierne was born nearly blind due to congenital cataracts but at an early age was discovered to have an unusual gift for music . (At age 2 he heard a piano for the first time. The pianist played him a Schubert lullaby and he promptly began to pick out the notes of the lullaby on the piano.) After completing school in the provinces, Louis Vierne entered the Paris Conservatory . Like Gabriel Faur© , Vierne served as an assistant to the organist Charles-Marie Widor at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris . Vierne subsequently became principal organist at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris , a post he held for many years from 1900 to his death in 1937. Vierne had a life that was physically and emotionally very difficult, with severe spiritual trials that are occasionally reflected in his music. His congenital cataracts did not make him completely blind, but he was what would be called today "legally blind." Dieses Schl¼sselerlebnis nannte er sp¤ter in seinen Memoiren eine „Offenbarung“. 1881 trat Vierne in das Pariser Blindeninstitut ein und wurde dort von Henri Specht (Klavier) und Henri Adam (Violine) unterrichtet. Ab 1887 erhielt er Orgelunterricht bei Louis Lebel und, nach Lebels Tod zwei Jahre sp¤ter, bei Adolphe Marty. Seit 1889 nahm Vierne Unterricht in Fuge bei C©sar Franck. Louis Victor Jules Vierne wurde am 8. Oktober 1870 in Poitiers geboren, wo sein Vater Herausgeber des "Journal de la Vienne" war. " Ich kam fast völlig blind zur Welt; meine Eltern umgaben mich mit besonderer Herzlichkeit, was mir schon sehr Früh zu einer fast ungesund zu nennenden Überempfindlichkeit verhalf... Dieser Zustand verfolgte mich in meinem ganzen Leben und war der Grund für Zeiten großer Freude, aber auch Zeiten unaussprechlichen Leidens." (Louis Vierne Journal. S. 124) 1873 wurde sein Vater zum Chefherausgeber des "Paris Journal" ernannt, was den Umzug der Familie nach Paris zur Folge hatte. Dort bekam der junge Louis ein Spielzeugklavier geschenkt und wurde auch bald seinem Onkel vorgestellt: Charles Colin, Professor für Oboenspiel am Pariser Conservatoire, der den begehrten Grand Prix de Rome gewonnen hatte und auch außerdem Organist war. Es war Colin, der zuerst Viernes musikalische Begabungen entdeckte ( "Er hat ein sehr exaktes Gehör, ein gutes Gedächtnis, rhythmisches Gefühl und natürlichen Sinn für Harmonien."
