Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Roncole, 9/10 October 1813; died Milan, 27 January 1901). He was born into a family of small landowners and taverners. When he was seven he was helping the local church organist; at 12 he was studying with the organist at the main church in nearby Busseto, whose assistant he became in 1829. He already had several compositions to his credit. In 1832 he was sent to Milan, but was refused a place at the conservatory and studied with Vincenzo Lavigna, composer and former La Scala musician. He might have taken a post as organist at Monza in 1835, but returned to Busseto where he was passed over as maestro di cappella but became town music master in 1836 and married Margherita Barezzi, his patron's daughter (their two children died in infancy). Verdi had begun an opera, and tried to arrange a performance in Parma or Milan; he was unsuccessful but had some songs published and decided to settle in Milan in 1839 where his Oberto was accepted at La Scala and further operas commissioned. It was well received but his next

Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi /dʒuˈzɛppe ˈverdi/ (either October 9 or January 27 ) was an Italian Romantic composer , mainly of opera . He was one of the most influential composers of Italian opera in the 19th century and went well beyond the work of Bellini Donizetti , and Rossini . His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture - such as " La donna ¨ mobile " from Rigoletto and " Libiamo ne' lieti calici " from La traviata . Although his work was sometimes criticized for using a generally diatonic rather than a chromatic musical idiom, and having a tendency towards melodrama , Verdi’s masterworks dominate the standard repertoire a century and a half after their composition.

Giuseppe Verdi
The Early Years
Verdi was born in Italy in the village of Roncole near Busseto in 1813. Mary Jane Phillips-Matz in her long awaited Verdi Biography provides the following information about the birth and birthplace: The composer Verdi was born during the fair week of the feast of San Donnino, the patron saint of the diocese to which Roncole belongs, but we cannot be sure where or when. For about 140 years everyone has believed that he was born on 10 October in the 'Verdi Birthplace' that was declared a national monument in 1901 . . . [but Verdi said] 'That is not my birthplace. The house where I was born was burned by the Russians.' None the less, he hung a large oil painting of the 'Verdi Birthplace' in the salon of his villa at Sant'Agata. (Phillips-Matz 1993, 12) Verdi disagrees with history in his accounts of the 'birthplace' and in other events as well. Verdi's musical education began at an early age, although it is not known exactly when he began formal study. It is known that "he was captivated by music [and] that his parents [early on] decided to give him an instrument of his own, a little spinet . . ." (Phillips-Matz 1993, 18)

Introduction
Print this section Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Italian opera composer, whose works stand among the greatest in the history of opera. He is considered by many to be the greatest Italian opera composer of all time. Verdi’s works are remarkable for their beautiful melodies and dramatic power. His most popular operas are Rigoletto , La Traviata and Aida (1871). In these, as well as in most of his other operas, Verdi displayed a deep understanding of the expressive power of the human voice and a genius for creating poignant and believable dramatic characters. Perhaps his greatest characterizations and his finest music are contained in his last two operas, Otello (1887) and Falstaff (1893). Verdi also wrote nonoperatic works. The best known of these compositions is the Requiem Mass

    Died: Milan, January 27, 1901
As a young man, Verdi composed operas much in the style of the earlier Italian Bel canto works (the operas of Donizetti being the most influential), Verdi continued to grow and develop his dramatic and musical talent throughout his life, and eventually wrote operas which are still considered today to be among the very finest in the entire Italian operatic repertoire. Beginning with the conventions of the bel canto style of the early part of the century, Verdi continually developed these forms and structures, and was able to create highly individual and dramatic works of art through his continued experimentation with harmony and orchestration. Of his thirty or so works for the operatic stage, virtually half of them are in the standard repertory of every opera company today. After a series of successes and setbacks, Verdi hit his stride in his "middle period" with the composition of such masterpieces as
