- from an entry in A Dictionary of English Folklore by Jacqueline Simpson and Steve Roud (Oxford OUP, 2000) Today the library is known as the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library (VWML) in honour of the eminent composer, song collector and President of the EFDSS, Ralph Vaughan Williams, who died in 1958. Up until that point it was called the Cecil Sharp Library as it chiefly comprised Sharp’s personal library, which he bequeathed to the EFDS in 1924. Its first permanent home was established with the opening of Cecil Sharp House in 1930, and Sharp’s daughter Joan was the first librarian. With the amalgamation of EFDS and the Folk Song Society and subsequent bequests, donations and purchases, the library has developed considerably over the years, most notably with the addition of the literature, sound and manuscript collections of other eminent folklorists and collectors of the twentieth century. These include the original papers of Lucy Broadwood, Janet Blunt, Anne Gilchrist, Maud Karpeles, George Butterworth, George Gardiner, the Hammond Brothers and Francis Collinson; copies of the papers and notebooks of Sabine Baring-Gould, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Kidson, Gavin Greig and James Madison Carpenter; and the field recordings of Percy Grainger, Mike Yates and the BBC Folk Music Archive.

74. Ralph Vaughn Williams Composer
ralph (pronounced Rafe ) vaughan williams was born in Gloucestershire in 1872, and was arguably the greatest British composer of the 20th century.
http://www.singers.com/composers/vaughnwilliams.html
Ralph Vaughn Williams
Ralph (pronounced "Rafe") Vaughan Williams was born in Gloucestershire in 1872, and was arguably the greatest British composer of the 20th century.
A champion of British cultural heritage in his own way, he died at the age of 85 in 1958, and his ashes are fittingly interred in Westminster Abbey.
Vaughan Williams received his training from Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford, both composers influenced by Brahms. Early Vaughan Williams works have their moments of Brahms and sometimes Wagner, but it is also very original, due to Vaughan Williams' interest in English folksong (he was a major collector). His original pieces and arrangements of British folksongs and hymn tunes are some of the most songful and durable in the English language.
Vaughan Williams influences are diverse. Stravinsky, Brahms, Parry, Debussy, Ravel, Bach, Byrd, and Hindemith and yet his style remained unique. He absorbed French impressionism ("In the Fen Country," String Quartet No. 1) and studied for a short time with Ravel (who called him "the only pupil who does not write my music"). But then he came into his own with the incidental music to a production of Aristophanes' "The Wasps," the song cycle "On Wenlock Edge," and the classic "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis." These works show a Vaughan Williams where his voice is unmistakably his own.
Vaughan Williams composed in almost every genre. He is one of the great setters of English poetry, and vocal music comprises a large part of his output. Major works include "Five Mystical Songs," "Merciless Beauty," "Sancta Civitas," "Serenade to Music," "Hodie," "10 Blake Songs," and "Dona nobis pacem." His several operas have not become stage staples: "Hugh the Drover," "The Poisoned Kiss," "Riders to the Sea," "Sir John in Love," and "Pilgrim's Progress." He is one of the greatest contributors to church music in the 20th century.

There is no composer, pop or classical, that I revere more than Ralph Vaughan Williams. His, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, is probably my favourite piece of music . I saw it performed in Texas by the Houston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson in 1985 and it moved me to tears. All RVW's symphonies are brilliant, but his Sea Symphony (No.1) and A London Symphony (No.2) are my most played. Next year is the 50th anniversary of this quintessentially English composer's death. To celebrate it Channel 5 are showing a two and a half hour film at midday on New Year's Day. The film, made by the brilliant Tony Palmer, is, you might think, an unusual thing to find on the fifth channel, surely BBC2 or BBC 4 would be the natural place for such a programme.
Apparently Tony Palmer offered the programme to the BBC but they rejected it with this letter.
'We must establish the tools that allow shared behaviours, and so harness the power of the audience and our network to make our content more findable. We have decided to take a radically new approach... and therefore free resources for projects of real ambition... So, given that this is the new vision for Vision, you will understand why a film about Mr V Williams such as you have proposed does not fit our remit. But good luck with the project, and do let me know if Mr V Williams has an important premiere in the future as this findability might allow us to reconsider.'
The BBC claim to have no knowledge of the letter having been sent and say they are planning their own programme about Vaughan Williams. There is a

      • UK Thursday, 25 October 2007 Ursula Lock, writer and poet: born Valletta, Malta 15 March 1911; married 1933 J.M.J. Forrester Wood (died 1942), 1953 Ralph Vaughan Williams (died 1958); died London 23 October 2007. Born in Malta in 1911, she was the daughter of Maj-Gen Sir Robert Lock. At the age of 22 she married J.M.J. Forrester Wood who, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, was killed in 1942. Until that time her life was therefore a nomadic affair and a surprising preparation for the years of fulfilment which began when she met Ralph Vaughan Williams early in 1938. She had been "bowled over" by his ballet, Job, while a student at the Old Vic, and had sent him a scenario of her own. "VW" was not much impressed, but he forwarded it to Douglas Kennedy, of the English Folk Dance Society. An unsatisfactory tripartite correspondence followed and it was characteristic of Ursula that she asked Kennedy to suggest that VW should take her out to lunch. This he did and things must have gone well, for they went on to see a Walt Disney Silly Symphony and "ended up sitting by the Serpentine".
