Steve writes ...
"Vaughan Williams pays homage to Byrd, Tallis, and Taverner and comes up with the finest a cappella mass since the Elizabethans - the vocal equivalent of the Tallis Fantasia. A modern work nevertheless, it creates and explores a variety of choral textures. RVW dedicated it to Gustav Holst and his Whitsuntide Singers. Roger Wagner led his Chorale in the piece's best performance to date, with a stirring account of Bach's Cantata No. 4 on the flip side - a classic recording of the stereo LP era. All others have paled in comparison. Wagner succeeds because he recognizes the energy within. The other performances sound like an extremely sedate and genteel Sunday sermon, the kind the writer Alan Bennett used to make fun of. Avoid Stephen Darlington and the Christ Church (Oxford) Cathedral Choir. Matthew Best and the Corydon Singers stand at the head of versions currently available." Biography Ralph Vaughan Williams was born on 12 October 1872 at Down Ampney, a village near Cricklade in Gloucestershire where his father was vicar. He composed his first work at the age of six and learned the piano, organ and violin as a child. In 1887 he went to Charterhouse, where some of his music was performed at a school concert, and from there to the Royal College of Music to study composition with Parry. After two years he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, to read history and take his B. Mus. He returned to the college in 1895 as a pupil of Stanford and began his lifelong friendship with another student, Gustav Holst. They shared a determination to be 'English composers' and candidly dissected each other's efforts to find an individual style while at the same time encouraging each other.

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958) View Discography
One of the leading English composers of his generation, Vaughan Williams was a pupil of Parry, Charles Wood and Stanford, and later of Bruch and Ravel. In his work as a composer he went some way towards creating a specifically English musical idiom, influenced by his interest in folk-song, but coloured by his own personal vision and language. Stage Works The stage music of Vaughan Williams includes the Shakespearean opera Sir John in Love, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor, the masque for dancing Job and the morality The Pilgrim's Progress, based on John Bunyan. Incidental music for the theatre includes music for The Wasps by Aristophanes, of which the Overture is often heard. He also wrote a number of film-scores. Orchestral Music Vaughan Williams wrote nine symphonies, the first of these with solo singers, chorus and orchestra A Sea Symphony, with words taken from Walt Whitman, the second "A London" Symphony and the third a "Pastoral" Symphony. The Sixth Symphony, completed in its first version in 1947, seemed to break new ground and was followed by a seventh, the Sinfonia Antartica, that had its origin in a film soundtrack. Compositions by Vaughan Williams for solo instrument and orchestra include the pastoral romance The Lark Ascending, for solo violin, and a Concerto accademico for solo violin and string orchestra. There is an attractive concerto for oboe and two more unusual concertos, one for harmonica and the other for bass tuba. Flos campi uses a solo viola and is scored also for a small choir and chamber orchestra.

RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
Writer Information Ralph Vaughan Williams, born October 12, 1872 at Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England, is considered by most to be the foremost English composer of his generation and the key figure in the revival of English music during the twentieth century. His family moved to London when Ralph was three, upon the death of his father, the cleric at the church in Down Ampney. The composer was educated at Charterhouse School were he studied piano, violin and theory. He furthered his studies at the Royal College of Music and at Trinity College, Cambridge (B.M. 1894, B.A. 1895, Mus D. 1901). Initially he tried his hand as a church organist, but soon settled on the life of teaching and directing choirs, and composing. Vaughan Williams served in the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War I. After the war, he became professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in London. Early compositions by Vaughan Williams showed little promise. This may be due in part, to the general confusion at that time of what really was an "English" style of composition. This confusion, and his early disappointments in composition, led Vaughan Williams to a life-long interest in English folktunes, and to his development of the concept of musical citizenship. The folksong figured prominently in all of the composer's work, from songs to symphonies, and influenced his selection of hymns and tunes whiled he edited the

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Sir John in Love In 1904 he joined the Folk-Song Society (established in 1898) and began to take an active interest in the recovery and study of old country tunes, collecting some in Norfolk. His first public success was with Toward the Unknown Region at the Leeds Festival in 1907 and this was followed in 1909 by his first great and characteristic compositions, the Wasps overture, the song cycle On Wenlock Edge , and A Sea Symphony (the first to use a chorus throughout). From 1906 he was editor of the English Hymnal , and this resulted in one of his best-loved works, the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis for strings, (1910). (The sense of religious wonder evoked by this music was later enhanced in such biblically-inspired works as the masque
