Ralph Vaughan Williams
Vaughan Williams received his training from Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford , both composers influenced by Johannes Brahms . Early Vaughan Williams works have their Brahmsian (and Wagnerian) moments, but in the early music that has survived, we hear something absolutely original and unique. Vaughan Williams became enthralled with the English folk song (he was a major collector). Maurice Ravel (who called him "the only pupil who does not write my music"), he hit the ground running with his incidental music to Aristophanes's "The Wasps," the song cycle "On Wenlock Edge," and the classic "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis."

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, RALPH BIOGRAPHY
One of the leading English composers of his generation, Vaughan Williams was a pupil of Parry, Charles Wood and Stanford, and later of Bruch and Ravel. In his work as a composer he went some way towards creating a specifically English musical idiom, influenced by his interest in folk-song, but coloured by his own personal vision and language. Stage Works The stage music of Vaughan Williams includes the Shakespearean opera Sir John in Love, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor, the masque for dancing Job and the morality The Pilgrim's Progress, based on John Bunyan. Incidental music for the theatre includes music for The Wasps by Aristophanes, of which the Overture is often heard. He also wrote a number of film-scores. Orchestral Music Vaughan Williams wrote nine symphonies, the first of these with solo singers, chorus and orchestra A Sea Symphony, with words taken from Walt Whitman, the second "A London" Symphony and the third a "Pastoral" Symphony. The Sixth Symphony, completed in its first version in 1947, seemed to break new ground and was followed by a seventh, the Sinfonia Antartica, that had its origin in a film soundtrack.

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Down Ampney, 12 October 1872; died London, 26 August 1958). He studied with Parry, Wood and Stanford at the RCM and Cambridge, then had further lessons with Bruch in Berlin (1897) and Ravel in Paris (1908). It was only after this that he began to write with sureness in larger forms, even though some songs had had success in the early years of the century. That success, and the ensuring maturity, depended very much on his work with folksong, which he had begun to collect in 1903; this opened the way to the lyrical freshness of the Housman cycle On Wenlock Edge and to the modally inflected tonality of the symphonic cycle that began with A Sea Symphony . But he learnt the same lessons in studying earlier English music in his task as editor of the English Hymnal (1906) - work which bore fruit in his Fantasia on a Theme by Tallis for strings, whose majestic unrelated consonances provided a new sound and a new way into large-scale form. The sound, with its sense of natural objects seen in a transfigured light, placed Vaughan Williams in a powerfully English visionary tradition, and made very plausible his association of his music with Blake (in the ballet Job ) and Bunyan (in the opera The Pilgrim's Progress ). Menwhile the new command of form made possible a first orchestral symphony

Educated at Charterhouse and Cambridge, he studied at the Royal College of Music, at Cambridge, and later in Paris with Maurice Ravel. Muir Mathieson invited him to write the first of his eleven film scores, 49th Parallel (d. Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, 1941), which coincided with the start of the British government's wartime policy to use cinema to rouse the nation's spirits. He was pre-eminent among the many big names of concert music who were keen to get involved in this populist cause at such a decisive stage in the conflict, especially where this involved documentary or semi-documentary approaches to the subjects of war, sacrifice and noble effort. Vaughan Williams' film scores tend to ignore narrative and visual detail, but intensify the drama with through-composed music, which was sometimes written before filming had begun. This was the case with Scott of the Antarctic (d. Charles Frend, 1948), of which Ernest Irving said (1948), "[it is] the function of music to bring to the screen the hidden and spiritual illustration into which the camera... is unable to peer". He was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935.

    Ralph Vaughan Williams:
Composer, conductor, organist, music editor and collector of folk music
Ralph (pronounced "Rafe") Vaughan Williams was born in Gloucestershire in 1872, and was arguably the greatest British composer of the 20th century. A champion of British cultural heritage in his own way, he died at the age of 85 in 1958, and his ashes are fittingly interred in Westminster Abbey.
Vaughan Williams received his training from Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford, both composers influenced by Brahms. Early Vaughan Williams works have their moments of Brahms and sometimes Wagner, but it is also very original, due to Vaughan Williams' interest in English folksong (he was a major collector). His original pieces and arrangements of British folksongs and hymn tunes are some of the most songful and durable in the English language. Vaughan Williams influences are diverse. Stravinsky, Brahms, Parry, Debussy, Ravel, Bach, Byrd, and Hindemith and yet his style remained unique. He absorbed French impressionism ("In the Fen Country," String Quartet No. 1) and studied for a short time with Ravel (who called him "the only pupil who does not write my music"). But then he came into his own with the incidental music to a production of Aristophanes' "The Wasps," the song cycle "On Wenlock Edge," and the classic "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis." These works show a Vaughan Williams where his voice is unmistakably his own.
