Holocaust opera A powerful, deeply moving performance of Viktor Ullmann's 'The Emperor of Atlantis', reviewed by LAWRENCE BUDMEN The Emperor of Atlantis . Composed in 1944 during the last months of Ullmann's life, this allegorical work is a powerful indictment of evil a vision of a world without art or humanity. On 29 December 2004 the Concert Association of Florida presented this historic work at the Lincoln Theater in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. The libretto of Ullmann's opera was the work of the poet Petr Kien. The opera is set in the mythical empire of Atlantis. Here the symbolic Emperor Overall wages war on a massive scale. In his world there is no place for Harlequin (representing life and art) and Death (disguised as an old soldier). Death goes on strike. As the Emperor's armies lie wounded and bleeding on the battlefield, Death offers the Emperor a bargain. Death will return to his work if the Emperor will be his first victim. The Emperor agrees. The opera ends with an ensemble (based on a Bach chorale the art that Hitler and the Nazis defiled) warning 'Thou shalt not take Death's great name in vain.' Printer-friendly James Conlon Conducts Ullmann's Kaiser von Atlantis for Houston Grand Opera Tonight By Matthew Westphal 02 Nov 2006 James Conlon James Conlon, music director of Los Angeles Opera and the Ravinia Festival near Chicago, visits Houston Grand Opera tonight to lead the company in a performance of Der Kaiser von Atlantis ("The Emperor of Atlantis") by Viktor Ullmann, one of several composers victimized by the Nazi regime whose music Conlon has made a project of reviving. A composer, pianist and music critic, Ullmann composed Der Kaiser in Theresienstadt, the "model" camp, set up by the Nazis to show how well Jews were living under the Third Reich. Many writers, musicians and other artists were interned in the camp, and an very active cultural life developed; Ullmann actually wrote Der Kaiser There will be only one performance of Der Kaiser in Houston: tonight at 7:30 at the city's Congregation Beth Israel. Laks was Polish and, like his hero, Chopin, made his career in France. The influence shows in his , written in 1949. Hints of Chopin surface continuously, encased in passages of theme development. Should you be seduced by the lyricism, the ending is abrupt, a scream in F sharp minor which shakes you out of complacency. It is as if Laks recalls the irony of his return to Poland, and can say no more. , written in 1946, is a far starker piece, its three movements structurally coherent. It starts with baroque references but soon changes key and leaps into harsh modernity. The second movement is a brooding meditation of unadorned low notes, contrasting with the affirmative, dominant final conclusion.
