interview with the composer re: "Silver Ladders" (1987) SHE CALLS herself a ''left-sided'' composer. That does not mean her music comes from the left side - the supposedly calculative, analytical side - of her brain. Nor does it mean she writes pieces that in any way espouse a left-leaning political philosophy. What it means, Joan Tower says, is that she devotes a great deal of energy to thinking about whatever hand-written music happens to be just to the left of the spot at which her pencil has ground to a halt. ''Some composers know in advance just where they're going,'' she says. ''I don't. In the beginning I have to spend a lot of time on where I am and where I've just been. Yeah, I'm pretty slow. I can write about 2 1/2 minutes of music per month. That's one piece a year - two if I'm lucky.'' Tower, 48, is in her second year as the St. Louis Symphony's composer-in-residence. Her music was introduced to the St. Louis audience when St. Louis Symphony music director Leonard Slatkin included here ''Sequoia'' on the opening program of the orchestra's 1984-85 subscription season. The 1981 ''Sequoia'' was Tower's first work for full orchestra. She's recently completed a second. Titled ''Silver Ladders,'' it will be premiered by Slatkin and the orchestra on next weekend's Powell Hall concerts.

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC REVIEW Joan Tower's Music And Low-keyed Birthday
November 8, 1998
By Ronald Caltabiano Joan Tower's music is known for its energy, color, and diversity, but these qualities did not emerge from the readings by the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble on Sunday at Old First Church. Billed as a sixtieth birthday celebration for the composer, the tepid programming and uninspired performances did little to sum up her accomplishments or show the breadth of her considerable catalogue. The program comprised works written entirely within fourteen years, 1981-1995, and the instrumentation varied only among solos, quintets, and a duo, despite the fact that ten performers took part in the evening. The key to Tower's music is in the details; in most works, performers must lead the audience through a mesh of short interwoven motives, guiding its ears toward the most significant events, and allowing less important filigree to blend into the background. Yet in the two largest works on the program, "Island Prelude" (1986) for woodwind quintet and "Turning Points" (1995) for clarinet and string quartet, one could hardly distinguish the motives from the passage work, or the significant harmonic changes from those intended only for coloristic effects. It seemed as if the performers had studied their parts completely, but the scores not at all. Even the leading oboe part in the woodwind quintet occasionally had trouble breaking free from the other instruments, although part of this problem may lie in the fact that the work is an arrangement from the original version for oboe and strings.

Joan Tower Chamber Dance
Joan Tower (born 1938) is one of America's most widely performed living composers of orchestral and instrumental music. She began her active musical career as pianist, serving as a member of the Da Capo Chamber Players from 1969 through 1984. In 1985, her composing career took off dramatically after she became composer-in-residence for the St Louis Symphony. Since that time, she has fulfilled commissions for major orchestras and instrumental ensembles throughout the United States. She won the Grawemeyer Award in 1990 for her work Silver Ladders and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1998. Her work has been released on countless recordings and many of her instrumental works have entered the standard repertory of their instruments. Tower has been a faculty member at Bard College since 1972, where she is currently the Asher Edelman Professor of Music. She is composer-in-residence with the Orchestra of St Luke's and has held numerous residencies with festivals, universities, and other American ensembles. Made in America , a fifteen minute orchestral piece. The work went on for performances by orchestras in every state in the Union during the 2005-06 season. This is the first project of its kind to involve smaller budget orchestras as commissioning agents of a new work by a major composer.

These notes compiled by Gerard Charles, BalletMet Columbus, February 1998 Following the success of her Of Rage and Remembrance , Kathryn Posin was commissioned by the Milwaukee Ballet to create a new work. The following is an article written in 1993 by Tom Strini of the Milwaukee Journal prior to the premiere. The composer writes the music, then the choreographer makes the dance. That's the way it is done in ballet. "We went up to Joan's house in Annandale-on-Hudson, and yes - we danced in her back yard," Posin recalled in an interview at the Milwaukee Ballet Studios. The memory of that frolic amused Posin a lot and embarrassed her a little. Later, when I raised the topic with Tower, she sent a peal of laughter ringing through the phone lines from Annandale, where she teaches at Bard College, to Milwaukee. "Kathy did something, and I said, 'Wait a minute, why are you moving so fast?' It seemed like so much information was coming out so quickly. She looked at me and said, 'Well, what would you do?' I'm overweight and everything, but I tried," Tower said.

Gloucester, angered that he, the Protector of the realm, would be barred entrance, orders his men to storm the gates. Woodville , inside the tower, demands to know what is going on.
