Virgil Thomson, Composer, Critic and Collaborator With Stein, Dies at 92
By JOHN ROCKWELL irgil Thomson, whose homespun, subtly sophisticated compositions and witty but trenchant criticism made him a central figure in American intellectual life for 55 years, died early yesterday in his suite at the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan. He was 92 years old, and his health had been in decline for several months. As a composer, Mr. Thomson is best known for two operas to texts written by his longtime friend Gertrude Stein: ''Four Saints in Three Acts'' (1934), which earned him a distinction among intellectuals that he never relinquished, and ''The Mother of Us All'' (1947). He also received a Pulitzer Prize - the only one ever awarded for a film score - for his music for ''Louisiana Story'' in 1948. Mr. Thomson began sending music reports from Paris to The Boston Evening Transcript in 1921, and continued writing through the 1920's and 30's for journals like Modern Music. His ''State of Music,'' a lively but incisive overview of the musical scene, was published in 1939, and he continued his observations until very recently: his ''Music with Words: A Composer's View,'' is scheduled for publication this month by Yale University Press. But the bulk of his journalism came as chief music critic of The New York Herald Tribune from 1940 to 1954. His prose - ''sassy but classy,'' he called it - breathed a mastery of American prose style and a spunkily opinionated expertise that set Mr. Thomson apart from his critical peers.

He served in the United States Army in France during World War I and graduated from Harvard University in 1922. From 1925 until 1932 Thomson lived in Paris, where he studied composition with the important teacher Nadia Boulanger and came under the influence of the iconoclastic composer Erik Satie and his disciples, the group of young composers known as Les Six . Thomson also wrote deeply felt religious music, notably the Missa Pro Defunctis (Requiem Mass, 1960). His musical style was basically Neo-Classical (reinterpreting older forms in modern ways). His masterpiece is considered to be his opera

    Biography
Betty Freeman was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1921 and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She was graduated from Wellesley in 1942, where she had studied music. She later took classes at the Juilliard Institute. Freeman began her activities as a philanthropist and supporter of musicians in 1961 by contributing to a young musician's legal defense. Since then, she has assisted more than 30 contemporary composers. Beginning in 1964, Freeman has served on the board of "Encounters," the Pasadena Art Museum's concert program, and beginning in 1981, she hosted her Monday Evening Musicales, a venue for the new works of composers, in her Beverly Hills home. She is currently on the board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, having supported for over a decade the orchestra's New Music Group until its close in 1991. Betty Freeman is an accomplished photographer. Her exhibit "Music People," a collection of photographs of leading figures in the world of contemporary music, toured internationally and was published as a book entitled MUSIC PEOPLE AND OTHERS (1987). She also produced a documentary film about Harry Partch entitled THE DREAMER THAT REMAINS (1972).

    Introduction
Archival documents are the mosaic of history. It has only been in recent decades that American music libraries have emphasized the collection and preservation of artifacts documenting American musical life. That is not surprising, for until recently the nation's musical scholars had concentrated on the lives and music of European composers. With today's attention to American composers classical and popular our libraries need to collect the primary source materials for histories of the nation's musical life in all of its aspects. Yale's Music Archives was founded formally in 1972, though at that time the Music Library already held a few unprocessed archival collections, most notably that of Charles Ives, a gift to Yale by his widow, Harmony Ives, in 1956. Although John Kirkpatrick had published in 1960 his astounding catalogue of Ives's music manuscripts, the papers generally had not received modern archival processing by 1972, when the Music Library's staff studied and adopted the archival methods of the University Library's Manuscripts and Archives Department and became, in essence, the musical branch thereof. Once the archival program was established and publicized, it was not difficult to make significant additions. Musicians or their families would contact the Music Library, Yale doctoral candidates would introduce the music librarian to the subjects of their dissertations, or the music librarian would seek out persons who played significant roles in the development and life of American music.
