26. Georg Philipp Telemann: A Detailed Biography
georg Philipp telemann Life and work, following his extensive career through Leipzig to Hamburg.
http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxtel.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Georg Philipp Telemann Born in Magdeburg in 1681, Georg Philipp Telemann belonged to a family that had long been connected with the Lutheran Church. His father was a clergyman, his mother the daughter of a clergyman, and his elder brother also took orders, a path that he too might have followed had it not been for his exceptional musical ability. As a child he showed considerable musical talent, mastering the violin, flute, zither and keyboard by the age of ten and composing an opera ( Sigismundus It was while he was a student at Leipzig University that a career in music became inevitable. At first it was intended that he should study language and science, but he was already so capable a musician that within a year of his arrival he founded the student Collegium Musicum with which he gave public concerts (and which Bach was later to direct), wrote operatic works for the Leipzig Theater, and in 1703 became musical director of the Leipzig Opera and was appointed organist at the Neue Kirche in 1704. While at the University he involved fellow-students in a great deal of public performance, to the annoyance of the Thomaskantor, Bach's immediate predecessor, Kuhnau, who saw his prerogative now infringed. No doubt bored with the complaints of Kuhnau and impatient to make something more of his life, Telemann did not stay long in Leipzig. In 1705 he accepted an appointment as Kapellmeister to the cosmopolitan court of Count Erdmann II of Promnitz at Sorau (now Zary), where the vogue for the French and Italian styles provided him with a new challenge. His association with the Sorau Kantor and theorist Wolfgang Caspar Printz and the reformist poet Erdmann Neumeister as well as the proximity to Berlin and contact with Polish folk music all proved stimulating. But Telemann's tenure was cut short by the imminent prospect of invasion by the Swedish army, causing the Court to be hurriedly disbanded. He visited Paris in 1707.

Georg Philipp Telemann March 14 June 25 ) was a German Baroque music composer , born in Magdeburg . Self-taught in music, he studied law at the University of Leipzig . The most prolific composer in history (at least in terms of surviving oeuvre), he was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach Antonio Vivaldi and a lifelong friend of George Frideric Handel . While in the present day Bach is generally thought of as the greater composer, Telemann was more widely renowned for his musical abilities during his lifetime. Telemann traveled widely, absorbing various musical styles and incorporating them into his own compositions. He is known for writing concertos for unusual combinations of instruments, such as multiple violas or trumpets or oboes or harpsichords. He held a series of important musical positions, culminating in that of music director of the five largest churches in Hamburg , from until his death in 1767.

Georg Philipp Telemann 1681-1767
Telemann held appointments in Sorau (1704), Eisenach (1709), and Frankfurt (1712) before he took the position at Hamburg (1721) which he held until his death. In 1722 Telemann was offered the cantorship of the St. Thomas School, Leipzig, which he declined (the following year Graupner also declined, after which Bach applied). Godfather to Bach's second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel , and possibly the most prolific of all composers, Telemann wrote 12 cycles of cantatas for the Church year, each cycle having one cantata per Sunday! By comparison, Bach wrote five such cycles. Telemann also wrote 46 passions (Bach 4), 40 operas (Bach 0), Masses motets sonatas chamber music , keyboard works, concertos overtures suites , and other orchestral works. Telemann is mentioned in a letter (1775) from C. P. E. Bach to Forkel as one whose works his father had especially prized in his later years.

XIA: Georg Philip Telemann
In 1701 he entered Leipzig Univ. with the intent of studying law; he organized a student collegium musicum there in 1702. Also in that year he was appointed music director of the Leipzig Opera, where he used students in productions. In 1704 he became organist at the Neue Kirche, and the following year he was appointed Kapellmeister to the court of Count Erdmann II of Promnitz at Sorau. Several visits to Poland acquainted him with Polish folk music, which he admired greatly. In 1708 or 1709 he moved to Eisenach to assume the duties of Konzertmeister and later Kapellmeister. For the orchestra he composed French overtures, concertos, and chamber works; for the Hofkapelle he supplied church cantatas and occasional music. It was there that he probably met J. S. Bach; he was godfather to C. P. E. Bach in 1714. In 1709 he married Louise Eberlin; she died in January 1711. The following year he became the city director of music at Frankfurt am Main and Kapellmeister Kapellmeister at Gotha, and on 16 October 1721 he was appointed

The German composer and organist Georg Philipp Telemann, b. Mar. 14, 1681, d. June 25, 1767, was regarded during his lifetime as one of Germany's greatest musicians. He was so prolific that he was never able to count the number of his compositions. Self-taught in music, he studied languages and science at the University of Leipzig. He held a series of important musical positions, culminating in that of music director of the five largest churches in Hamburg, from 1720 until his death. Telemann traveled widely, absorbing various musical styles and incorporating them into his own compositions. He was a friend of Johann Sebastian Bach and godfather to Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel Handel , also his friend, was quoted as saying that Telemann could write an eight-part motet as easily as anybody else could write a letter. Telemann's contrapuntal skill, melodic facility in the Italian style, French elegance, and fertile imagination resulted in music that was fluent but often lacking in depth. Excerpted from M.Mus. Thesis, Rice University, 1983:
The Oboe d'amore in the Works of Georg Philipp Telemann with Critical Editions of Selected Unpublished Works Around 1760, composers ceased writing for the instrument, and it gradually fell out of use. The revival of the music of J.S. Bach was responsible for its modern reconstruction. Composers in the twentieth century have again begun to draw on the oboe d'amore as an orchestral resource, and most oboe makers now offer a modern version of the instrument. In addition, historical reproductions are also readily available. Current scholarship regarding the oboe d'amore has concentrated in three major areas: surveys of the repertoire available for the instrument, catalogs of extant oboes d'amore from the eighteenth century, and detailed studies of Bach's usage of the instrument. No information is available on how or through whom the oboe d'amore was introduced to Telemann. Previously, the first known work by Telemann to use the instrument has been generally accepted as the opera However
