S.I. Tanejev was er zijn belangrijkste leerling. In deze jaren kwamen zijn compositorische gaven tot volledige ontwikkeling. Hij componeerde toen zijn 1ste pianoconcert en het ballet "Het zwanenmeer".

Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
Perhaps the best Russian composer of all time, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky was a genius for creating melodies, mastering musical structure, and highly developing the sense of musical drama. Born in Votkinsk, in the Ural Mountains of European Russia, his father was a government inspector of mines. Even when Peter started the piano at the age of seven, through until he was nineteen, he never showed any signs of musical talent. But when he was nineteen, Tchaikovsky realized that he really wanted to be a musician. Continuing his job as a clerk in the Ministry of Justice, he began to study theory and compose. When the great Nicholas Rubinstein founded the Moscow Conservatory, he realized that he needed talented musicians to teach as professor, therefore hiring Tchaikovsky. He was a very talented composer, no doubt, but most of the other professors believed he was too young to be an actual skilled professor. For twelve years Tchaikovsky held the position, and even wrote a book on harmony to prove he was a true professor of music. Not all of Russia was convinced that Tchaikovsky, however. The critics and other composers such as Berlioz and Liszt saw him as a lucky wanna-be, and sniped at him and his works. Strenuous work and pressure as a composer, critic, and teacher brought Tchaikovsky brought him to a state of nervous collapse. Fortunately, a music lover and wealthy widow who singled out young, talented composers helped Tchaikovsky out, paid him for thirteen, feeling pity and sorrow for the young man.

  • E-mail Share Gerard McBurney continues to top himself in his efforts to enrich the concert audience's experience of the symphonic repertory. At the same time, he's doing a masterly job of convincing newbies they are missing something essential in their lives if they don't take the plunge.
The creative director and host of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's successful "Beyond the Score" series built his latest presentation, heard Sunday afternoon at Symphony Center, around Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony, a work many might imagine would resist audiovisual "explanation." How wrong they were!
What the capacity audience heard was an absorbing, informative exploration that took apart Tchaikovsky's music movement by movement, theme by theme, examining it in light of the composer's melancholy personality, his repressed homosexuality, his brief and disastrous marriage and, above all, his deeply rooted belief in fate's implacable hold over human existence.
With his usual seamless blend of visual and aural imagery, McBurney related the Symphony No. 4 to late 19th Century Russian literature, painting, and political and social unrest. He received stalwart assistance from conductor Alexander Polianichko, the CSO, the wonderful Chicago actor Larry Yando (who read from Tchaikovsky's letters) and Golosa, an 11-member Russian folk choir from the University of Chicago.

S hakespeare, the Battle of Borodino and Dante were the sources for three of Tchaikovsky's most popular orchestral works recorded here. He was somewhat nagged into Romeo and Juliet as a subject by Mily Balakirev, a fellow- composer given to organising the musical lives of others, and the result in its first version was not very successfully premiered at Moscow on 14 March 1870, a few weeks before Tchaikovsky's 30th birthday. It was later twice revised before it began to win the widespread acclaim that has at times obscured its intrinsic musical merits. Although styled a 'Fantasy-Overture', the overall design is a symphonic poem in sonata-form with an introduction and an epilogue. It opens with the solemn thoughts of Friar Laurence, and the main part of the work is a contrast between the vivid depiction of street-brawls between the feuding families and the eloquently emotional theme of the tragically appointed love of the title figures.
The music illuminates the essence of the tale, its harmonic subtlety used to build and resolve tension, while the forceful irregular rhythms of the street music point ahead to Stravinsky and beyond.

Tchaikovsky: ``Nutcracker'' Suite
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1840-1893. Suite from the ballet The Nutcracker , Op. 71a. Completed 1892, first performance March 19, in St. Petersburg. Scored for 3 flutes (3rd doubling piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, glockenspiel, tympani, harp, celesta, and strings. It may come as a surprise to many to learn that Pyotr (Peter) Tchaikovsky, one of the best-loved composers of all time, began his adult life in one of the least glamorous occupations known to man: government clerk. History has not recorded his exact assignments, however, for the man was so indifferent to his job that he later forgot exactly what it was that he had done! The young official had continued his youthful interest in music, but declared at the age of 21 that ``even if I actually had any talent, it can hardly be developed now.'' It is indeed fortunate for posterity that he turned out to be wrong! Only a year after he wrote these words, he became disillusioned by an ``unjust'' promotion over his head and entered the new Conservatory of the Russian Society of Music. Some thirty years later, in December of 1891, the now-successful composer's new opera

http://www.lambda.net/~maximum/tchaik.html
Peotr As A Child Peotr Ilich Tchaikovsky was born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. He started taking piano lessons at age 5, but he was not encouraged to apply his natural musical talent as a child. It wasn't until he was 21 that he started studying music seriously. Two years later he quit his job as a clerk in the ministry of justice to pursue a full time musical career. Tchaikovsky was a musical genius, a national hero, and a known homosexual.
The Marriage of Tchaikovsky
Throughout his life Tchaikovsky tried to conceal his homosexuality, although it was one of the world's worst kept secrets. "I am aware that my inclinations are the greatest and most unconquerable obstacle to happiness; I must fight my nature with all of my strength. I shall do everything possible to marry this year."
Tchaikovsky letter to his brother. In an attempt to conceal and repress his homosexuality, Tchaikovsky married Antonina Milyukova in 1877. The wedding was immediately followed by a failed attempt at suicide. He walked into the Moska River in hope of contracting pneumonia. The marriage ended within a year.
The True Loves of Tchaikovsky
The survival of the brilliant composer is credited to the financial support of Nadezhda von Meck. Mme. von Meck never met Tchaikovsky but was so impressed by his work that she supported him for 12 years. Without explanation, the support was withdrawn by the wealthy, eccentric widow in 1890.

Gay Love-Letters from Tchaikovsky to his Nephew Bob Davidov
Gay men have taken to their hearts the music of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-93) because it is perceived (rightly or wrongly) to contain all the longing and despair of homosexual angst in a homophobic world. Although he was one of the great musical thinkers, it is for the melodic lyricism and suffering so audible in his work, rather than its complexity or brilliance, that he will be remembered. Tchaikovsky's homosexuality was denied by Soviet musicologists until fairly recently, and much material still remains to be retrieved from Russian archives and published in English. His lovers included Alexey Apukhtin in his music student days 1867-70; Vladimir Shilovsky, a wealthy young lad whom he also met at the Moscow Conservatory, during 1868-72, and who financed several trips for the two of them; Alexei Sofronov his valet from 1872 to the end of his life; his pupil Eduard Zak, who killed himself in 1873 (he inspired the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture ); Joseph Kotek in the mid-1870s; his nephew Vladimir Davidov (second son of his sister Alexandra) in the 1880s-1890s, to whom he dedicated the

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Biography
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Russian , sometimes transliterated as Piotr , Anglicised as Peter Ilich N.S. ); April 25, O.S. )) was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. Although not a member of the group of nationalistic composers usually known in English -speaking countries as The Five , his music has come to be known and loved for its distinctly Russian character as well as its rich harmonies and stirring melodies. His works, however, were much more western than his Russian contemporaries as he effectively used both nationalistic folk melodies and international elements. Contents 1 Biography
