ARNOLD STEINHARDT, VIOLINIST
view discography Violinist Arnold Steinhardt was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1937. He had his first violin lessons with Peter Meremblum and Toscha Seidel, and he made his debut at the age of fourteen as a guest soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. He then studied with Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and later, sponsored by conductor George Szell, with Joseph Szigeti in Switzerland. Steinhardt won the Philadelphia Youth Competition in 1957, the Leventritt Award in 1958, and the bronze medal in the Queen Elisabeth International Competition in 1963. He subsequently appeared in recital and as guest soloist with major orchestras throughout the United States and Europe and served as assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell. During the summer of 1964, Steinhardt and three other string players, joined by pianist Rudolf Serkin, performed chamber music at the Marlboro Festival in Vermont. Their success, and the encouragement of Alexander Schneider, a member of the legendary Budapest String Quartet, prompted the group (without Serkin) to form the Guarneri String Quartet, with Steinhardt as first violin, a position he still holds today.
