S. Gilbert , including the still-popular H.M.S. Pinafore The Pirates of Penzance , and The Mikado . Sullivan's artistic output included 23 operas, 13 orchestral works, eight choral or oratorio works, two ballets, incidental music to several plays, and numerous hymns and other church pieces, songs, parlour ballads, part songs, carols, and piano and chamber pieces. Apart from his comic operas with Gilbert, Sullivan is best known for some of his hymns and parlour songs , including " Onward Christian Soldiers The Absent-Minded Beggar ", and " The Lost Chord ". However, his most critically praised pieces include his Irish Symphony , his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra , his Overture di Ballo The Martyr of Antioch The Golden Legend , and, of the Savoy Operas The Yeomen of the Guard . Sullivan's only grand opera Ivanhoe , was initially successful but has been little heard since his death.

Image Details SULLIVAN, ARTHUR PERCY (1896-1937), soldier and banker, was born on 27 November 1896 at Prospect, Adelaide, son of Arthur Monks Sullivan, storekeeper, and his wife Eliza, n©e Dobbs. Educated at Crystal Brook Public School and Gladstone High School, he joined the National Bank of Australasia at Gladstone in 1913 and was transferred to Broken Hill, New South Wales, and then to Maitland, South Australia. Sullivan enlisted as a private in the Australian Imperial Force on 27 April 1918 and embarked in July as a general reinforcement. He transferred on 5 October to the artillery, but the war was over before he was allotted to a unit in France. Promoted acting corporal on 23 May 1919, he joined the British North Russia Relief Force five days later and was officially discharged from the A.I.F. on 12 June. The relief force landed at Archangel in June and July, and relieved most of the original 1918 expeditionary force which included nine A.I.F. members. Sullivan was with the 45th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, in L. W. de V. Sadleir-Jackson's brigade which moved 150 miles (241 km) down the Dvina River.

Comyns Carr Page of The Camelot Project at the University of Rochester Sir Arthur Sullivan Though the name Arthur Sullivan may not be immediately recognized, when paired with the name of his counterpart and working companion, W. S. Gilbert, there are few throughout the world who would not know of him. The musical arm of this dramatic duo lived a very interesting and diverse life. Initially finding extensive success through his classical training, Arthur Sullivan's true fame was achieved through his genius as a composer of musical comedies. Unfortunately, this team split up, and Sullivan attempted to continue his work in other genres. It was four years after this famous break-up that Henry Irving approached the aging musician and asked him to work with Burne-Jones to help him create his masterpiece, King Arthur . Five years after the Arthur opened, Sullivan died, having spent most of his fortune gambling, and having lost the luster of his once great fame. On June 24, 1842, Arthur Sullivan was born in South London. He was christened with the middle name Seymour, though after realizing the potentially embarrassing monogram, he decided to revert back to the name on his birth certificate (which was simply Arthur Ssullivan)(Young, 4). Sullivan's father was a band conductor and recognized his young son's talent in music. Sullivan himself attributes his early introduction to music to his father:
