He has taught for many years in the Music School at CalArts Subotnick has also worked extensively with interactive electronics and multi-media , co-founding the San Francisco Tape Music Center with Ramon Sender , and often collaborating with his wife Joan La Barbara . His son is animator Steven Subotnick . His notable students include Ingram Marshall Mark Coniglio , and Lois V Vierk Silver Apples of the Moon was notable for more than being an answer to a record-biz trivia question. Early electronic music was made using wave generators and tape-manipulated sounds. Subotnick was among the first composers to work with electronic instrument designer Don Buchla . Buchla's modular voltage-controlled synthesizer, which he called the Electric Music Box and which was constructed partly based on suggestions by Subotnick and Sender, was both more flexible and easier to use, and its sequencing ability was integral to Subotnick's music. At a time when electronic music was highly abstract, largely concerned with pitch and timbre, with rhythm an afterthought or of no consequence and patterns largely avoided, Subotnick broke with the academic avant-gardists by including sections with regular rhythms. Its rhythmic energy perhaps has something to do with

Morton Subotnick was always interested in the relationship between technology and performance, and he was somewhat influential in inventing new ways performers can interact with music. His electronic music works in the 60's and 70's had historic significance, but did not seem to influence many musicians the way Stockhausen's or Varese's music did. Subotnick was a pioneer in developing new interfaces between electronic music and performers. Morton Subotnick was born on April 14, 1933, in Los Angeles. After several bouts with bronchitis, he was encouraged to play a wind instrument by his family doctor. He then started playing clarinet; by the time he was twelve, he began composing ("Musical Explorer" web page - intro.htm). He received his B.A. from the University of Denver (while performing with the Denver Symphony on clarinet) and received his M.A. from Mills College, where he studied composition with Leon Kirchner and Darius Milhaud (Gagne 335). His earliest forays into electronic music were pieces composed for theatrical scores while he was Music Director of the Ann Halprin Dance Company. Many of his

is best known for Silver Apples of the Moon , which used the same type of early synthesizer (the Buchla Electronic Music System Touch was recorded in Quad (!), although of course I ripped it in stereo ... this is only a small part of the album-length piece, but the section about two minutes into this clip makes my eyes start to bug and sparks shoot out of my ears. Lots of his recordings are available on CD or LP through his website , inclding several with two albums on one disc.

The Key To Songs/Return

Morton Subotnick is one of the United States' premier composers of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. The next eight years saw the production of several more important compositions for LP, realized on the Buchla synthesizer: "The Wild Bull", "Touch", "Sidewinder" and "Four Butterflies". All of these pieces are marked by sophisticated timbres, contrapuntally rich textures, and sections of continuous pulse suggesting dance. In fact, "Silver Apples of the Moon" was used as dance music by several companies throughout the world. In 1975, fulfilling another record company commission (this time, Odyssey), Subotnick composed "Until Spring", a work for solo synthesizer. In this work, changes in settings which Subotnick made in real time on the synthesizer were stored as control voltages on a separate tape, enabling him to duplicate any of his performance controls, and to subsequently modify them if he felt the desire to do so. While the use of control voltages was nothing new, it suggested to Subotnick a means to gain exact control over real-time electronic processing equipment. The next step in Subotnick's use of control voltages was the development of the "ghost" box. This is a fairly simple electronic device, consisting of a pitch and envelope follower for a live signal, and the following voltage controlled units: an amplifier, a frequency shifter, and a ring modulator. The control voltages for the ghost box were originally stored on a tape, updated now to E-PROM. A performer, whose miced signal is sent into the ghost box, can then be processed by playing back the pre-recorded tape of E-PROM, containing the control voltages. As neither the tape nor E-PROM produce sound, Subotnick refers to their sound modification as a "ghost score". By providing the performer with exact timings, coordination between performer and the ghost score is controlled.
