The Beginnings
Igor Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum, Russia in 1882. We can celebrate his birthday on two days, June 17 and 18. The Orthodox Eastern religion had a different calendar than North America.
Two birthdays a year is not such a bad idea!
Although Stravinsky was born in Russia, his parents were Polish. His father was a bass-baritone singer in the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg. Igor first saw his father perform in Glinka's opera Ruslan and Ludmilla. He was allowed to go backstage after the performance and see the great Tchaikovsky.

April 7, 1971 OBITUARY
Igor Stravinsky, the Composer, Dead at 88
By DONAL HENAHAN Igor Stravinsky, the composer whose "Le Sacre du Printemps" exploded in the face of the music world in 1913 and blew it into the 20th century, died of heart failure yesterday. The Russian-born musician, 88 years old, had been in frail health for years but had been released from Lenox Hill Hospital in good condition only a week before his death, which came at 5:20 A.M. in his newly purchased apartment at 920 Fifth Avenue. Stravinsky's power as a detonating force and his position as this century's most significant composer were summed up by Pierre Boulez, who becomes musical director of the New York Philharmonic next season: "The death of Stravinsky means the final disappearance of a musical generation which gave music its basic shock at the beginning of this century and which brought about the real departure from Romanticism. "Something radically new, even foreign to Western tradition, had to be found for music to survive, and to enter our contemporary era. The glory of Stravinsky was to have belonged to this extremely gifted generation and to be one of the most creative of them all."

Igor Stravinsky
Biography
Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity. He first achieved international fame with three ballets commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev and performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes (Russian Ballets): L'Oiseau de feu ("The Firebird") (1910), Petrushka (1911/1947), and Le sacre du printemps ("The Rite of Spring") (1913). The Rite, whose premiere provoked a riot, transformed the way in which subsequent composers thought about rhythmic structure; to this day its vision of pagan rituals, enacted in an imaginary ancient Russia continues to dazzle and overwhelm audiences. After this first Russian phase he turned to neoclassicism in the 1920s. The works from this period tended to make use of traditional musical forms (concerto grosso, fugue, symphony), frequently concealed a vein of intense emotion beneath a surface appearance of detachment or austerity, and often paid tribute to the music of earlier masters, for example J.S. Bach, Verdi, and Tchaikovsky. In the 1950s he adopted serial procedures, using the new techniques over the final twenty years of his life to write works that were briefer and of greater rhythmic, harmonic, and textural complexity than his earlier music. Their intricacy notwithstanding, these pieces share traits with all of Stravinsky's earlier output; rhythmic energy, the construction of extended melodic ideas out of a few cells comprising only two or three notes, and clarity of form, instrumentation, and of utterance.

The son of a distinguished Russian singer, Stravinsky spent his earlier years in Russia, either in St. Petersburg or, in the summer, at the country estates of his relatives. He studied music briefly with Rimsky-Korsakov but made a name for himself first in Paris with commissions from the impresario Dyagilev, for whom he wrote a series of ballet scores. He spent the years after the Russian Revolution of 1917 in Western Europe and in 1939 moved to the United States of America. There in the post-war years he turned from a style of eclectic neo-classicism to composing in the twelve-note technique propounded by Schoenberg A versatile composer, inventive in changing styles, he may be seen as the musical counterpart of the painter Picasso. Igor Stravinsky Works Stravinsky made an immediate impression in Paris with his score for L'oiseau de feu (The Firebird), for the Ballets Russes of Dyagilev. Unlike Petrushka , they inhabit a Russia of the mind, which might well have been compromised by a return to the real Russia. A further point of interest about these wartime works is the emergence of a specifically Stravinskian answer to the problems of resolving increased rhythmic and harmonic tension. In The King of the Stars (1912), dedicated to Debussy, we already find Stravinsky exploring the tensions of quiet dissonances in a static, almost congealed rhythm, and something of the same kind may perhaps have occurred in the lost Funeral Dirge Wedding also ends (not, like

Apart from his classical school education, Stravinsky received piano, harmony and composition lessons, soon showing a remarkable talent for improvisation. He then studied law until 1905 but he continued to take music lessons. From 1905 until 1908 Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov was his only composition teacher. With Op. 4 (1908) Stravinsky made a deep impression on Sergey Dyagilev, the director of the Ballets Russes in Paris, who first hired him for orchestration works and in 1909 commissioned him to write the music of The Firebird

Return Igor Stravinsky Igor Stravinsky was almost as striking in person as his powerful musical compositions. The avant-garde composer, whose bitonalities and eccentric rhythms influenced generations of musicians, had oversized features that seemed unsuited to his small head and five-foot, three-inch physique. Rico Lebrun, however, who made this drawing in Los Angeles in 1947 after Stravinsky had moved to California, found power and dignity in Stravinsky's profile.
Composer and artist were acquaintances in Los Angeles. At the time of this drawing, they were engaged in similar projects: Lebrun had started painting a Crucifixion cycle based on Matthias Grünewald's monumental altarpiece, and Stravinsky was working on a liturgical mass, inspired by Mozart, for the Catholic Church. Both artists reworked traditional forms to emphasize their essential structure and monumentality. As Stravinsky wrote: "The more art is controlled, limited, worked over, the more it is free." Lebrun's charcoal portrait is conceived with minimal detail but powerful effect, much like Stravinsky's music.

http://www.edgreenmusic.org/Stravins-a.htm
E DWARD G REEN COMPOSER, MUSIC EDUCATOR / NEW YORK CITY On the Rhythm of "The Rite of Spring" BY EDWARD GREEN I believe that after centuries of thought on the subject, rhythm, in its full meaning, as been described for the first time by Eli Siegel. I learned from Aesthetic Realism that rhythm is a oneness of opposites, and that the opposites which are in rhythm, and which make it beautiful, are also in me and in every person, and that we need to make them one. I am grateful to Eli Siegel for showing me that I can learn from the very art I practice how to have a beautiful and kind life. The study of rhythm, Mr. Siegel shows, is an education both in beauty and in good sense. As much as any composer in the history of music, Igor Stravinsky stands for what rhythm can do. And of his compositions, the one seen as having the most powerful and most subtle of rhythms is his l9l3 ballet score, The Rite of Spring In a class of February 23, l966, Eli Siegel explained that "rhythm begins with sound as accented and unaccented." And he added, "Anything that seems to be given more insistence than something else in the field of sound is the beat aspect of that sound. Beat is what stands out." A simple example of this is 3/4 time, where there is a steady pulse which receives an accent regularly, every three counts:

The past slips from our grasp. It leaves us only scattered things. The bond that united them eludes us. Our imagination usually fills in the void by making use of preconceived theories...Archaeology, then, does not supply us with certitudes, but rather with vague hypotheses.
