Jump to: navigation search Igor Stravinsky. Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky Russian Igor' Fjodorovič Stravinskij June 17 April 6 ) was a Russian composer , considered by many in both the West and his native land to be the most influential composer of 20th century music. He was a quintessentially cosmopolitan Russian who was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the century. In addition to the recognition he received for his compositions, he also achieved fame as a pianist and a conductor , often at the premi¨res of his works. Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity. He first achieved international fame with three ballets commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev and performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes (Russian Ballets): L'Oiseau de feu ("The Firebird") Petrushka (1911/1947), and Le sacre du printemps ("The Rite of Spring") (1913). The Rite , whose premiere provoked a riot, transformed the way in which subsequent composers thought about rhythmic structure; to this day its vision of pagan rituals, enacted in an imaginary ancient Russia continues to dazzle and overwhelm audiences. After this first Russian phase he turned to neoclassicism in the 1920s. The works from this period tended to make use of traditional musical forms (

with Philip Glass and Robert Craft We focus on the life and works of Igor Stravinksy in this installment of Milestones of the Millennium . Host Lisa Simeone guides us through wide-ranging examples of Stravinsky’s works, which demonstrate his vitality and versatility. We also hear interviews with Stravinsky’s protégé and student, conductor Robert Craft, and the highly acclaimed late 20th century composer, Philip Glass. Glass says Stravinsky is the most influential composer of the 20th century and a "theater composer par excellence Stravinksy’s works called for instrumentation that had not been used in the 19th century. He integrated tam-tam drums and other percussion instruments, and he required violinists to play in a more percussive way. Stravinsky also employed irregular meter, as in his score for "The Firebird", which uses 7 beats per measure to create a fluid and spontaneous effect. We hear the Lullaby and Finale to the "The Firebird" performed by the Bastille Opera Orchestra with Myung-Whun Chung conducting. We also hear excerpts of Stravinsky’s 1918 "The Soldiers Tale," written for a small ensemble. Stravinsky said this work was influenced by American jazz sheet music, though at the time he had never actually heard jazz.

This amazing conductor and pianist dabbled in all genres of music and wowed the public with his innovations such as The Fire Bird and the Sonata for two pianos Strawinsky and his family decided to move to the Geneva Riviera, to take advantage of the region's exceptional micro-climate that was beneficial for his wife's health. They arrived in Montreux , on the banks of Lake Geneva , the summer of 1910. After having stayed in the Pension des Tilleuls, at the Hôtel du Châtelard and then the Hôtel Des Crêtes, the family finally settled into the Pervenche villa, the former home of Ernest Ansermet. There, Strawinsky found all the inspiration needed for his masterpiece

Detailed Information about Introduction (born Lomonosov, 17 June 1882; died New York, 6 April 1971).
Russian composer, later of French (1934) and American (1945) nationality. The son of a leading bass at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, he studied with Rimsky-Korsakov (1902-8), who was an influence on his early music, though so were Tchaikovsky , Borodin, Glazunov and (from 1907-8) Debussy and Dukas. This colourful mixture of sources lies behind The Firebird (1910), commissioned by Dyagilev for his Ballets Russes. Stravinsky went with the company to Paris in 1910 and spent much of his time in France from then onwards, continuing his association with Dyagilev in Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring These scores show an extraordinary development. Both use folktunes, but not in any symphonic manner: Stravinsky's forms are additive rather than symphonic, created from placing blocks of material together without disguising the joins. The binding energy is much more rhythmic than harmonic, and the driving pulsations of The Rite marked a crucial change in the nature of Western music. Stravinsky, however, left it to others to use that change in the most obvious manner. He himself, after completing his Chinese opera

He studied with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov , and his early works, like the Symphony No. 1 in E Flat , show the influence of that master. Almost immediately, however, he began to incline toward the music of the French impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel , while retaining his nationalist outlook. This resulted in such pieces as Fireworks The Faun and the Shepherdess , and the major ballet Firebird . It was not a simple matter of combining, however. A new musical element entered the mixclean orchestral textures, "bright" instrumentation, and an emphasis on stamping, irregular rhythmsheard especially in the Firebird 's "Infernal Dance of the King Katschei."

The Rite of Spring . Trouble began with the playing of the first notes, in the ultrahigh register of the bassoon, as the renowned composer Camille Saint-Saens conspicuously walked out, complaining loudly of the misuse of the instrument. Soon other protests became so loud that the dancers could barely hear their cues. Fights broke out in the audience. Thus Modernism arrived in music, its calling card delivered by the 30-year-old Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Louis Armstrong

His father was an opera singer who performed in Kiev and St. Petersburg, but his greatest musical influence was his teacher, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. The colorful, fantastic orchestration that Stravinsky brought to his folk song-inspired melodies was clearly derived from Rimsky-Korsakov. But the primitive, offbeat rhythmic drive he added was entirely his own. The result was a music never before heard in a theater or concert hall. STRAVINSKY, IGOR BIOGRAPHY
The son of a distinguished Russian singer, Stravinsky spent his earlier years in Russia, either in St. Petersburg or, in the summer, at the country estates of his relatives. He studied music briefly with Rimsky-Korsakov but made a name for himself first in Paris with commissions from the impresario Dyagilev, for whom he wrote a series of ballet scores. He spent the years after the Russian Revolution of 1917 in Western Europe and in 1939 moved to the United States of America. There in the post- war years he turned from a style of eclectic neo-classicism to composing in the twelve-note technique propounded by Schoenberg. A versatile composer, inventive in changing styles, he may be seen as the musical counterpart of the painter Picasso. Stage Works Orchestral Music Stravinsky's orchestral music includes symphonies, suites from some of the ballets, and two suites arranged from sets of easy piano pieces. Concertos of various kinds include a 1936 Concerto for piano, wind, timpani and double basses, an Ebony Concerto for jazz band and a Violin Concerto

Stravinsky began studying with the famous Russian composer in 1903, and after Rimsky's death in 1908, never had another teacher. His early works caught the imagination of ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929) , impressario of the famed Ballets Russes , who invited Stravinsky to compose a ballet. The result was the voluptuous and impressionistic (with Stravinskian overtones) The Firebird in 1910. This was followed by the even more successful

Igor Fedorovich Stravinsky was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. The son of a famous bass singer at the Imperial Opera, Stravinsky showed little inclination to pursue a musical career until, while a law student, he began to study composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Stravinsky was catapulted into the musical limelight with the composition of three ballets for the Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev in Paris: Firebird Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The latter work caused a celebrated scandal at its first performance and remains one of the best-known and most influential pieces of 20th-century music. During World War I, Stravinsky lived in Switzerland, and shortly afterward he settled in France. His creative association with Diaghilev continued until 1929 and included notable collaborations with Pablo Picasso and Leonid Massine ( Pulcinella , 1920), Jean Cocteau ( Oedipus Rex , 1927), and George Balanchine ( Apollon Musagete , 1928). In 1939 he moved to the United States.

In a career spanning six decades, he composed a glittering sequence of works of astonishing diversity, from the three, vividly colorful early Russian ballets, through the sharp wit and purity of his `neo-classical' scores and the powerful spirituality of works like the Symphony of Psalms and the Mass, to the highly individual application of serialism in the late works.

    In his own words...

"Consonance, says the dictionary, is the combination of several tones into a harmonic unit. Dissonance results from the deranging of this harmony by the addition of tones foreign to it. One must admit that all this is not clear. Ever since it appeared in our vocabulary, the word 'dissonance' has carried with it a certain odor of sinfulness. Let us light our lantern: in textbook language, dissonance is an element of transition, a complex or interval of tones that is not complete in itself and that must be resolved to the ear's satisfaction into a perfect consonance." Composer and conductor. Russian by birth, later a citizen of France and the United States.
Igor Stravinsky is often considered something of a revolutionary, in part based on the riotous reception of his ballet The Rite of Spring . Stravinsky's career, however, suggests more evolution than revolution. Perhaps no other composer in this century or any has written in such a variety of styles. And it is the unique genius of Stravinsky that his musical personality is detectable in each of these styles.
Stravinsky came from a musical family, although his training was limited, reflecting his family's desire that he pursue studies in law. As a student at the university in St. Petersburg, he made the acquaintance of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and studied with the older composer. His music quickly caught the attention of Serge Diaghilev, the director of the Ballets Russes in Paris. Stravinsky was commissioned to write a ballet for the theater, his
