      Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) View Discography
Richard Strauss enjoyed early success as both conductor and composer, in the second capacity influenced by the work of Wagner . He developed the symphonic or tone-poem to an unrivalled level of expressiveness and after 1900 achieved great success with a series of impressive operas, at first on a grand scale, but later tending to a more classical restraint. His relationship with the National Socialist government in Germany was at times ambiguous, a fact that protected him but led to post-war difficulties and self-imposed exile in Switzerland, from which he returned home to Bavaria only in the year of his death, 1949. Operas Richard Strauss created an immediate sensation with his opera Salome , based on the play of that name by Oscar Wilde. A collaboration with Hugo von Hoffmannsthal followed, with the operas Elektra and the even more effective Der Rosenkavalier in 1911, followed by Ariadne auf Naxos Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) remains the best known of the operas of Richard Strauss, familiar in excerpt from its famous concert waltz-sequence. Richard Strauss, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 (1896)
The dramatic and literary bases of Strauss' early tone poems were diverse and more or less innocent. With the 19th_century German metaphysical poet Friedrich Nietzsche, and the prophet-figure he distantly based on the ancient Persian mystic philosopher Zoroaster, the composer took his stand on more problematical ground. The cult of the or superman, propounded in 1885 in Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra, came half a century later to look dangerously like the foundation for the concept of the super-race that led to Nazism. Man and Superman, who declares he hates the poor so much that he wants to abolish them utterly. Nietzsche in any case is best approached as a poet, not as a philosopher. Also sprach Zarathustra, which offers mankind "not the Joy of Life (for there is no such thing), but the Fullness of Life, in the joy of the senses, in the triumphant exuberance of vitality," is a work of the imagination. To blame it for the excesses of those who may later have taken it literally, and corrupted its raptures into a political theory of monumental if terrifying banality, is to make a category mistake not unlike theirs. With regard to Strauss' tone poem, "freely based on Friedrich Nietzsche," the most sensible course for listeners is likewise to take the piece as music, undistracted by considerations of dubious metaphysics. This is essentially a lyric drama, captivating its audience through vivid gesture and trenchant characterization. Strauss himself, when he introduced the work to Berlin shortly after its Frankfurt premiere in November 1896, observed in his program note:

Princess Marie-Th©r¨se, the wife of Field Marshal von Werdenberg, has taken the young Count Octavian as her lover. After a night spent together, the Princess and Octavian are breakfasting in her bedroom, when a noise outside disturbs them. It is not, however, the Field Marshal returning from the Croatian forest, as the Princess at first fears, but Baron Ochs von Lerchenau, her cousin, who forces an entry. Octavian, unable to escape in time, dresses up as a chambermaid and must fend off the advances of the lecherous Ochs, who is quite taken with “Mariandl”.
The Baron, intending to consolidate his financial situation by marrying the daughter of the newly ennobled Faninal, a wealthy army supplier, has come to ask the Princess to suggest a “Knight of the Rose” (the “Rosenkavalier” of the title) suitable to Faninal’s rank, who would, according to aristocratic custom, bear a silver rose to the young Sophie von Faninal as a token of Ochs’s troth. On a whim, the Princess recommends Count Octavian.
During the Princess’s daily levee, in which she receives artists, secretaries, merchants and petitioners, the Baron argues boisterously with the Princess’s notary, trying to better the terms of his forthcoming marital contract.

CHAPTER ONE Richard Strauss
By MATTHEW BOYDEN
Northeastern University Press Read the Review AND PARADISE WAS ALL AROUND US
Franz Strauss sent this letter to Georg Pschorr on June 12, 1864, the day after the birth of his son. Richard's arrival exorcised demons that had tormented him since the death of his first two children over a decade earlier. Three years later, on June 9, 1867, his second wife Josephine gave birth to Johanna, Richard's only sibling. In short, Franz was not an easy man to live with. From the outset Josephine looked upon him as something of a patriarch (increasingly so after her father's death in 1867), which helped him overcome some of his insecurities. The aggressive manner, his aversion to compromise and his arrogance were easily explained, but his confrontational disposition made family life a strain. Certainly, the sensitive Josephine (recalled by Richard's sister Johanna as a woman of `a rare simplicity, modest and undemanding') felt it more than anyone else. Few were surprised when she began to wither beneath her husband's stentorian personality. By the late 1870s she was suffering prolonged bouts of depression, brought on by a growing sense of inferiority (which Franz did little to dispel), and it was not long before her mind began to fail her. Long stretches in primitive psychiatric institutions made a bad situation worse, and by 1899 Josephine was threatening suicide.
