by Rollo H. Myers T he death last month of Richard Strauss is a sharp reminder to us of the impermanence of fame. For few could deny that Strauss was as famous in his day as any musician has ever been. His day, however, was not, when all is told, a long one, though while it lasted it was spectacular enough. Indeed Strauss must be counted, along with Debussy and Sibelius, as one of the three great figures dominating nineteenth-century , and was not, as in the case for example of Debussy or Stravinsky, an instinctive form of utterance seeking expression from the very first, then this assumption does perhaps provide us with a key to a baffling psychological problem inherent in the whole Straussian oeuvre Strauss was very much in demand as a conductor throughout his career (he was famous, and deservedly so, as an interpreter of Mozart); and he held some of the most important posts in Europe. Thus, from 1898 to 1910 he was conductor of the Royal Opera, Berlin; and from 1908 to 1920 he regularly conducted the State Opera Concerts. His appointment as permanent conductor of the Vienna Opera lasted from 1919 to 1924; and in 1921 he toured the United States, where he was held in great esteem. volte-face tour de force , a masterpiece of its kind and delightful entertainment.

      Richard Strauss
      About
Considered by many to be the last of the great romanticists, the thoroughly German Richard Strauss wrote in a style that early in his career was progressive and explorative, but during and after the World Wars came to be considered old-fashioned (a belief likely due to humanity's loss of innocence). As a youth, Strauss' hidden infatuation with Wagner later found full expression in his penchant for enormity and power. His

    ( Originally Published 1935 )
It was said that after the transcendentalism of Zarathustra, Strauss, composing "Don Quixote," was mocking himself. Certainly he caught and has nobly conveyed, not merely the humor, but the humanity and pity of Cervantes's tale. Like the author, the composer has pictured for us two kinds of men, and op-posed interpretations of existence , Don Quixote, the impractical idealist, and Sancho Panza, the realist—he who of all men may be the most blind! It may be admitted that this is the limit of program music. Whether, if the score were not provided with explanations endorsed by-the composer, we would all give it the same interpretation is much of a question. But that would also be the case with much other mu-sic of a dramatic kind. Strauss's progress from a composer of symphonic program music to a composer of music-dramas is apparent in every score that came from his pen. "Don Quixote" is, from one point of view, such literal music as to be almost visual—"moving pictures for the ear," as a German musician once remarked. But it is also music of astonishing delineation, an epitome of thematic development, modern tone painting and psychological commentary combined."

    Died: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 8 Sept 1949
    Nationality: German composer
His father, a professional horn player, gave him a musical grounding exclusively in the classics, and he composed copiously from the age of six. He went briefly to university, but had no formal tuition in composition. He had several works given in Munich, including a symphony, when he was 17, and the next year a wind serenade in Dresden and a violin concerto in Vienna. At 20, a second symphony was given in New York and he conducted the Meiningen Orchestra in a suite for wind. In 1885 he became conductor of that orchestra, but soon left and visited Italy. He had been influenced by Lisztian and Wagnerian thinking; one result was "Aus Italien," which caused controversy on its première in 1887. By then Strauss was a junior conductor at the Munich Opera. Strauss was now moving towards opera. His "Feuersnot" was given in 1901; in 1904 "Salome" was begun, after Wilde's play. It was given at Dresden the next year. Regarded as blasphemous and salacious, it ran into censorship trouble but was given at 50 opera houses in the next two years. This and "Elektra" (given in 1909) follow up the tone poems in their evocation of atmosphere and their thematic structure; both deal with female obsessions of a disordered, macabre kind, with violent climaxes involving gruesome deaths and impassioned dancing, with elements of abnormal sexuality and corruption, exploiting the female voice pressed to dramatic extremes.
