Richard Strauss
Strauss (no relation to the Viennese Waltz family) shone in two major areas: tone poem and opera. Almost single-handedly, he carried the Wagnerian opera tradition and the Romantic Lisztian tone poem into the twentieth century. He is also one of the great composers of Lieder Strauss began to compose at an early age in an idiom which owed much to Robert Schumann Johannes Brahms Aus Italien After he left the university and began a conducting career, Strauss met Alexander Ritter, a composer and poet, who converted him to the school of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner . It took Strauss some time to master this new form, but the tone-poem

Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) In the same way that Bach marked both the pinnacle and the end of the Baroque Era, Richard Strauss was the last of the great Romantics. Like his contemporary Gustav Mahler he both followed and greatly extended the type of musical expression founded by composers such as Richard Wagner where highly charged music was performed by enormous orchestras. He was very much a celebrity at the peak of his career as both composer and conductor and, though he faded from the limelight as younger composers explored new territories, he remained an inspiration to a new generation of musicians. He was born in Munich in 1864, and like many great composers was clearly gifted from a very early age. His father Franz Strauss was one of the foremost Horn players of the day, and Richard's talents were also recognised and encouraged by none other than Hans von Bulow (the first husband of Lizst's daughter Cosima, later to marry Wagner). Inspired initially by Berlioz and Brahms his first compositions were more classical in nature, before he moved in the direction of the more uninhibited romanticism of Lizst and Wagner. By his early twenties Richard had composed a considerable amount of music, but it was with his first "Tone Poem" Don Juan in 1889 that his career was to take an upward turn. Having written several tone poems to major acclaim, Strauss turned first to writing Operas, and then to conducting, his longest lasting post being with the Berlin Philharmonic for 12 years. During this time his compositional output declined to near zero, but then in later life a last spurt of creativity resulted in a number of mature works seeming in part to return to a more classical form.

His artistic education was strictly conservative, his well-mannered, well-heeled appearance that of a stolid investment banker, yet his music shocked the world. Richard Strauss stirred controversy with iconoclastic symphonic works that inspired avid debate throughout contemporary music circles, as well as with erotic operas that literally incited crowds to riot. Strauss was born in Munich in June, 1864. His father, Franz, was a fiery artist himself and the most highly ranked horn player in Germany, hand-picked by Richard Wagner for several of the Maestro's world premiere orchestras. Notably, the well publicized volcanic relationship of Franz Strauss, impresario-conductor Hans von Bulow, and Wagner was characterized by regular heated exchanges and feuds. Franz made no secret of his dislike for Wagner's horn composition and von Bulow's authoritarianism; an amazingly independent attitude for any freelance musician toward two artistic heavy weights. Wagner and von Bulow allowed Franz his disdainful bent because they simply could not replace him. Meanwhile, certain that no one since Mendelssohn had written anything worthwhile, Franz preached from an anti-Wagnerian pulpit to his son, Richard, an approach which had little restraining effect, however, on the young man's later style of operatic composition.

Strauss, Richard (Georg)
0.01 sec. write_ads(AdsNum, 0)
German composer and conductor. He followed the German Romantic tradition but had a strongly personal style, characterized by his bold, colourful orchestration. He first wrote tone poems such as Don Juan Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks (1895), and (1896). He then moved on to opera with Salome (1905) and Elektra (1909), both of which have elements of polytonality. He reverted to a more traditional style with Festival March Aus Italien , produced at Munich in spring 1887, when he became sub-conductor at the Opera there. Macbeth , his first symphonic poem, was composed that year. In 1889 he became assistant conductor to Lassen at the Weimar Court Opera and gained his first major success with the tone poem Don Juan at Bayreuth.
