Strauss was born on June 11 , in Munich , the son of Franz Strauss , who was the principal horn player at the Court Opera in Munich. He received a thorough, but conservative, musical education from his father in his youth, writing his first music at the age of six. He continued to write music almost until his death. During his boyhood he had the good fortune to be able to attend orchestra rehearsals of the Munich Court Orchestra, and he also received private instruction in music theory and orchestration from an assistant conductor there. In 1874 Strauss heard his first Wagner operas, Lohengrin Tannh¤user and Siegfried ; the influence of Wagner's music on Strauss's style was to be profound, but at first his father forbade him to study it: it was not until the age of 16 that he was able to obtain a score of

Early Career and Works
He had several works given in Munich, including a symphony when he was 17, and the next year a wind serenade in Dresden and a violin concerto in Vienna. Noticeably, a number of his fifteen operas focused on the dominance of women. It is not surprising that Richard Strauss's wife, Pauline de Ahna, a professional soprano was powerful in her own way, nevertheless he had great affection and regard for her.

German composer and conductor. Strauss wrote in nearly every genre, but is best known for his tone poems and operas.
Richard Strauss was the most clearly programmatic composer of the nineteenth century, and he used the freedoms of musical pictorialism to create sounds that bring us into the twentieth century. While many of his works have classical underpinnings, they are driven by descriptive techniques. Strauss exploits these to create musical representations ranging from bleating sheep to the transfiguration of the human soul.
As a conductor, Strauss had a unique vantage point from which to study the workings of the orchestra. From this vantage point he developed a sense for orchestration that was unrivaled. He immediately put this sense to use in a series of orchestral pieces that he called "tone poems," including Macbeth Don Juan Till Eulenspeigels lustige Streiche (1895), and Don Quixote (1897). These works are intensely programmatic, and in the last two Strauss elevated descriptive music to a level not approached since the techniques of text painting during the Renaissance. He also used his knowledge of orchestral techniques to produce a revised version of Hector Berlioz's important orchestration treatise; this edition remains a standard to this day.

Richard Strauss
From LoveToKnow 1911
STRAUSS, RICHARD ), German composer, was born at Munich on the Ilth of June 1864, the son of Franz Strauss, an eminent hornist. To some extent a prodigy , Strauss was something of a pianist at four, a composer at six, and at ten he was already seriously studying music under F. W. Meyer, the Munich Hofkapellmeister. Soon the result of this study began to make itself apparent. Singers sang Strauss's songs; the Walter Quartet played his A (op. 2); Hermann Levi performed his D minor Symphony - a work that does not figure in the composer's list; and Billow took the composer under his wing and introduced his early Serenade for wind instruments to the Meiningen public. For obvious reasons Strauss had not yet found himself. He had passed through the gymnasium and the university, and his music studies had been thorough. But all this had made of the youth merely an excellent technical musician, who in his Eight Songs (op. To) and in his Pianoforte Quartet (op. 13) showed how strongly he was influenced by predecessors, Liszt in the one case, Mendelssohn in the other. Billow's efforts to kindle in Strauss something of the fire of his own enthusiasm for Brahms's work ultimately proved fruitless. But to Billow, and even more to Alexander Ritter, Strauss owed the awakening in his own mind of the interest in the modern development of music that eventually in its ripeness placed Strauss at the very top of the composers' tree of his time. In 1885 Strauss succeeded Billow as conductor of the Meiningen

Background
Richard Strauss was a German composer whose life spanned the late Romantic and Modern eras of Western music . Like some others of his generation, Strauss was interested in using music not only to tell stories, but also to portray emotional and psychological states. (Sigmund Freud's work, which was the basis of modern psychology, became widely known in the early twentieth century and influenced many artists and musicians.) Unlike most other serious composers who were working in the first half of the twentieth century, Strauss was not interested in exploring twelve-tone or other Modern methods of composition. His music remained late Romantic in style, strongly influenced by Berlioz, Liszt, Wagner, and other late-nineteenth-century composers. Like others in this tradition, Strauss often wrote for large orchestras, taking advantage of the many colors available to him through the different instruments. His music is usually tonal (unlike most Modern compositions), but heavily

Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Munich, 11 June 1864; died Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 8 September 1949). His father, a professional horn player, gave him a musical grounding exclusively in the classics, and he composed copiously from the age of six. He went briefly to university, but had no formal tuition in composition. He had several works given in Munich, including a symphony, when he was 17, and the next year a wind serenade in Dresden and a violin concerto in Vienna. At 20, a second symphony was given in New York and he conducted the Meiningen Orchestra in a suite for wind. In 1885 he became conductor of that orchestra, but soon left and visited Italy. He had been influenced by Liszt ian and Wagner ian thinking; one result was Aus ltalien , which caused controversy on its premiere in 1887. By then Strauss was a junior conductor at the Munich Opera. Other tone poems followed: Macbeth Don Juan and come from the late 1880s. It is
