Mr. Oscar Straus Constantinople Oscar Solomon Straus - Minister to Letters 1888 - 1889
In the August 1994 issue of 'wholedamfam' I wrote an article containing some of the letters written by Oscar Straus during his 1887 and 1888 tenure as Minister to Constantinople The letters he wrote during the remainder of 1888 through 1889 will be examined in this issue of the newsletter. Except where otherwise indicated, the letters were written in Constantinople
Paris, October 25, 1889: I hear satisfactory news from Constantinople, matters continue in good shape. I am always kept busy the first few days in paying official visits I observe that the Louvre presents to each purchaser a large rubber balloon with 'Louvre' stamped on - it is 18 inches in diameter and an immense attraction, people visit there to get a balloon for their children - perhaps you could adopt this at RHM. Constantinople, November 8, 1888: We reached here on the 5th after a most pleasant voyage. Sarah is as busy as she possibly can be getting her house in order. Personally I have not begun work as I am yet occupied in making the required official calls The Election. All the news that has reached us thus far indicates without mistake that the honest able and straight forward Cleveland has been defeated. Personally I am prepared to fold my tents and go West to resume my duties and occupation as a plain American Citizen. Of course it would even from personal grounds have been more agreeable to return home and have my friends in power. I regret most of all that the great issues for which the administration stood will have been buried until that future time when the country will have paid a penalty for deterring such salutary and needed reforms.

(more info) Born in Vienna and a pupil of Max Bruch in Berlin, Oscar Straus followed the advice of Johann Strauss, Jr., who told him to gain experience by conducting in provincial theatres. In Berlin he won some fame in the Überbrettl cabaret, for which Schoenberg also wrote. Returning to Vienna at the turn of the century, he began to write operetta in a series of works that rivalled in popularity those of Lehár. In 1939 he moved to Paris and then to New York and Hollywood, returning after the war to Bad Ischl, where he died in 1954.
