Karlheinz Stockhausen, 79, had wide influence in pop-music circles
By Seattle Times news services PREV of NEXT EDOUARD RIEBEN / AP Avant-garde German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen: "... every sound is precious and can become beautiful ... " He was 79. Mr. Stockhausen was one of the most important and controversial postwar composers, helping to shape a new understanding of sound through electronics and "controlled chance" sounds that led to new styles of computerized and sampled compositions. Paul McCartney and John Lennon of the Beatles were Stockhausen fans. The single "Strawberry Fields Forever" showed Stockhausen's influence and the group honored the composer by using his image on the cover of its 1967 album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (fifth from the left in the back row). Stockhausen wrote 362 individually performable works, according to his publisher, including more than 140 of electronic or electro-acoustic music, and brought out more than 100 albums.

Karlheinz Stockhausen 1928-2007
"He is known for his electronic compositions that are a radical departure from musical tradition and incorporate influences as varied as the visual arts, the acoustics of a particular concert hall, and psychology. Stockhausen was considered by some an eccentric member of the European musical elite and by others a courageous pioneer in the field of new music. Rock and pop musicians such as John Lennon, Frank Zappa and David Bowie have cited him as an influence, and he is also credited with having influenced techno music."

One of the greatest and most influential composers of the 20th century, Karlheinz Stockhausen, died on 5 December. The announcement, made by the Publishing Company Stockhausen, was confirmed on by his ex-wife Mary Bauermeister. As a composer he was a pioneer in using live electronics during performances. His opera cycle "Licht" ("Light") is considered as being the longest stage work since Wagner's "Ring der Nibelungen". As a teacher Stockhausen has influenced many composers of his own and later generations. Together with Pierre Boulez and Luigi Nono together formed the Triple Star of New Music in the 1950s. Karlheinz Stockhausen: a death ignored

Tags:  Culture Music Films The Beatles ... Karlheinz Stockhausen Karlheinz Stockhausen died yesterday. The following exchange is from an interview he gave in May of this year:
Stockhausen was idolised by The Beatles Q What did you enjoy most about the 20th century?  A The incomparable amount of new discoveries and inventions in my works. A few weeks ago it was the anniversary of Schubert's death. About a month before he died, aged 31, with nine symphonies, a dozen or so string quartets, twenty plus piano sonatas, more than 600 songs and plenty other work to his name, he enrolled for lessons in counterpoint, finding himself lacking in the more technical aspects of composition. The difference between the attitudes of the two men is telling. The name Stockhausen became a clich©, an automatic by-word for musical difficulty and extremity. He was revered by certain more popular musicians. The Beatles famously featured him on the cover of Sergeant Pepper. In fact, it's unlikely that The Beatles were that familiar with his oeuvre: what was important was the idea of Stockhausen as the Uncompromised Artist. The actual music was secondary, if not entirely irrelevant.

Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of Germany's most important postwar composers, held a workshop session in Rome in 1981. (Associated Press/file) Email Print Text size By Mark Swed Los Angeles Times December 8, 2007 LOS ANGELES - Karlheinz Stockhausen, the great German composer who envisioned music as a force of cosmic revolution and who himself became a musical force of nature with an unprecedented impact on both high and popular post-World War II culture, died at his home in Germany. He was 79. Mr. Stockhausen died Wednesday in Kurten, Germany, according to an announcement on his website. No cause of death was given. At the height of his fame in the 1960s, Mr. Stockhausen's name became synonymous with the future of music. His experiments with the structure of sound and his innovations with electronics made him a pioneer of the musical avant-garde but also attracted the attention of the most venturesome jazz and pop groups. He helped inspire Miles Davis's most extreme musical experiments, and the Beatles included Mr. Stockhausen's photograph on the collage cover of "St. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band." While he never minded the attention, Mr. Stockhausen remained the epitome of the uncompromising artist. He was a prolific composer of 362 works. He wrote numerous texts explaining his often arcane theories. He taught courses about his music and encouraged acolytes. He demanded selfless devotion from his chosen performers, many members of his extended family. A true visionary, he never let expense or practical matters stand in his way. He cared little for worldly possessions and was photographed for decades wearing the same jacket.

    Karlheinz Stockhausen, 1928 - 2007.
Karlheinz Stockhausen , who has died aged 79, was one of the great visionaries of 20th-century music. He was fond of quoting Blake's lines "He who kisses the joy as it flies, lives in Eternity's sunrise"; and like Blake, the pursuit of his vision led him down strange, and often awkward paths. The results earned him a reverence among a cult following which is unique among 20th-century composers; but they also earned him a fair amount of ridicule.... Updated through 12/13. The title of his most famous (and some would say best) piece, Gruppen , has a marvellous exuberance, in which fantasy and rigour feed off one another. By this time Stockhausen had already become the acknowledged leader in what was then a fledgling medium; electronics. In the threadbare studio of the Paris Technical College he worked on a new dream: "I now wanted a structure, to be realised in an Etude, that was already worked into the micro-dimension of a single sound, so that in every moment, however small, the overall principle of my idea would be present."... [I]t makes no sense to divide his career into a rationalist and a mystical phase; both were intertwined from the beginning, and they came together in the serial principle, to which Stockhausen, remained loyal to the end.
