Interview with Iara Lee for MODULATIONS
Introduction by James Wesley Johnson
(January 1999)
Iara Lee interviewed Stockhausen in Frankfurt in August 1997 for the Modulations film- while a brief excerpt of this interview appears in the film, this entire interview is an unpublished exclusive. Q: What have you been working on recently? A. I spent most of the year in the studio for electronic music at a radio station in Cologne or in other studios where I produced new works with all kinds of electronic apparatus. And during the last two years I was contacted regularly by musicians of so-called pop groups from England, Canada, America, who asked me to make comments on their music. They sent me tapes, cassettes. And the BBC from London did six programs with Stockhausen's comments on the new techno musicians. And in the last month, for example, I was asked by the most popular weekly magazine in Germany to comment on six works of the most famous pop groups. So I did that. I analyzed their works. And the research in the field of transformation of samples interests me very much. So there's a universal development going on. And I'm always interested when other musicians are trying to discover new worlds of sound.
Q: One of your comments is that a lot of times it's too repetitive?

Avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen dies at 79
CBC News Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of Germany's most important and controversial postwar composers, has died, German state broadcaster ZDF reported Friday. He was 79. Stockhausen gained fame through his avant-garde works in the 1960s and 70s and later moved to composing works for huge theatres and other projects. He died on Wednesday. No cause of death was announced. Stockhausen was known for electronic compositions that are a radical departure from musical tradition and have influenced both a generation of classical composers and musicians from genres as wide-ranging as jazz, rock and electronica. Stockhausen composed more than 280 works, and conducted first performances of most of them himself in his idiosyncratic style. Some music lovers never accepted work without traditional harmonies, but others loved the varied newness of his music. "What happened to my work since 1951 was comparable to what happened to the Viennese School [of composition]," Stockhausen said in an interview with BBC.  "They had even a lot of faithful followers, but in Germany, generally we had a situation after the war — we still have a situation — where the traditional music is over-estimated. The baroque, classical, romantic is dominating, whereas new developments, new discoveries and sounds are not wanted."

The construction of the piece reveals a sequence of events with inserted pauses of varying durations. There are different ways of producing an event. It can be done with the short wave receiver and instrument / voice or solely with instrument / voice. However, the initial event, which gets this show on the road, must always combine short wave sounds with instrument/voice, but on the other hand, the characteristics of this inaugurating event are rather free and loose, concerning duration, register, dynamics and rhythm.
Stockhausen wants the short wave event to fuse completely with the instrument / voice. After the first event the composer calls for an even distribution of short wave events and other events, but much freedom is allowed here. The score carries notations of the characteristics mentioned in last paragraph, which are to be considered according to the consecutive order of the transformation signs laid down by

You are here: Home Features Karlheinz Stockhausen Words like 'important' and 'controversial' inevitably surface when you examine the lengthy career of German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. A few facts to kick off. He pioneered electronic music in "variable form". He has written graphical scores that can be read from any direction. Inspired by dreams of flying, he has written works for a string quartet where each participant performs from their own helicopter hovering above the concert hall. In short, he does things none of us really understand but sound really quite impressive. Although he is said to have influenced notable artists from The Beatles to Bjork, approaching his work is not an easy sell for the uninitiated. "The loops," Stockhausen enthuses about his latest work, Cosmic Pulses, "were enlivened by manual regulation of the accelerandi and ritardandi around the respective tempo, and by quite narrow glissandi." It's certainly not anything you'll be jumping up and down to with a pint of lager on your head.
Osaka World's Fair But if, like me, you have pretensions about enjoying music all the more when you don't have a clue what you're talking about, you may get a kick out of dipping a peregrinating toe into the choppy waters of the Stockhausen oeuvre. You'll find an incredibly deep seam of works (over 300) ranging from his early experiments with electronic music in Electronic Studies from the early 1950s, through to the celebrated seven-opera cycle of Licht, which he dedicated himself to during the majority of the 80s and 90s.

"...each of the sections comprises a microcosm from a different perspective. 'Mantra' is such a piece in that each of of its parts reflects itself, backwards, as in a mirror, standing on its head, elongated, compressed, twisted. It is super-redundant, pervasive, just like a bottle of Coke, that instead of a beverage produces the famous concept of 'Coca-Cola'... it is played once quite openly, and then as a kind of prayer, time and again in all its ratios of pitches, durations and tempos by the pianists. Indeed, it is a quasi-meditative, exotic, beautiful late- and post-serial music." Reinhard Oehlschlagel.

Feb 1, 2003 12:00 PM, By Laura Pallanck Few composers were as influential in the second half of the 20th century as Karlheinz Stockhausen (born 1928). His music has had an effect across a wide range of genres, from chamber music and opera to rock (he's in the cover collage of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ) and the underground dance scene (witness his cameo appearance in the film Modulations As one of the most well-known post-WWII composers, Stockhausen became famous for his structurally rigorous approach to music. He was heavily influenced by Austrian 12-tone composer Anton Webern, who used number theory to control the parameters of a musical work. Stockhausen would take things a step further and look for ways to control every aspect of sound. At the Cologne studio, where he studied from 1947 to 1951, Stockhausen helped pioneer

German composer Stockhausen dead at 79
Posted December 8, 2007 07:03:00
Updated December 8, 2007 10:56:00 Died: German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen at Old Billingsgate Market, London, in 2005 (Wikipedia Commons/Flickr) Acclaimed German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen has died at the age of 79 in Kuerten in western Germany, the Stockhausen Foundation has announced. The foundation said Stockhausen, considered one of the most important composers of the past century, died on Wednesday and would be buried in a cemetery in the forest outside the small town. Stockhausen's earliest works were in the serialist style but he became known from the mid-1950s for his experiments with aleatoric technique, which leaves key elements during a musical performance to chance. A true enfant terrible of contemporary music, he influenced everyone from the likes of Brian Eno to Bjork - and even appeared on the cover of the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album. His foundation said he composed a total of 362 individually performable works.

Karlheinz Stockhausen Stockhausen took a position as co-editor of die Riehe in 1954 and also enrolled in phonetics classes with Karl Meyer-Eppler at Bonn University, while still managing some time as a composer in the Cologne studios. His compositions began to gain him recognition for his work and in 1958, he began working on the sketches of perhaps his best known electronic piece, Kontakte for electronic sounds. piano, and percussion. His orchestral piece, Gruppen, was also premiered. It was not until two years later that Kontakte was given its world premiere. In 1964, Stockhausen formed a group for performing live electronic music which is still in existence today. In recognition of his work , Stockhausen received the German gramophone critics award. He continued to write electronic music and served as Visiting Professor of Composition at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California at Davis. Stockhausen's compositions were the focus the Expo '70 world fair in Osaka, Japan. His pieces were performed for over one hundred eighty days during the year. He was given the position of professor of composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Cologne and remained there until 1977. In 1975, Stockhausen was given a grant by the German government to compose a piece as a gift to the United States for the American Bicentennial Celebration. The result was a composition entitled Sirius, which was given its incomplete premiere in 1976. A year later, Stockhausen completed it. Since 1977, Stockhausen has been working on a substantial music drama cycle entitled Licht (Die sieben Tage der Woche). The cycle, is largely complete yet remains unfinished. It has been receiving premieres in portions as they are completed.

      • UK Monday, 10 December 2007 Karlheinz Stockhausen, composer and conductor: born Mdrath, Germany 22 August 1928; Artistic Director, Westdeutscher Rundfunk Electronic Music Studio 1963-77, Artistic Consultant 1977-90; Professor of Composition, Cologne State Conservatory 1971-77; married 1951 Doris Andreae (one son, three daughters; marriage dissolved), 1967 Mary Bauermeister (one son, one daughter; marriage dissolved); died Krten, Germany 5 December 2007. Karlheinz Stockhausen was one of only a tiny number of composers born and working in the 20th century who transformed the field of music. Like most prominent composers of his time, what brought him to the fore was not so much his musical talent as his overall vision, intellectual brilliance and work-discipline.
