Renowned German composer and electronic music pioneer Karlheinz Stockhausen passed away December 5 at his home in Kuerten, Germany, according to statement released today by Stockhausen-Verlag . He was 79.
Born August 22, 1928 in a village near Cologne, Stockhausen rose to prominence in the 1950s with a number of pieces that broke decidedly with convention. Across a career that extended into this century, he invoked both awe and controversy with his unorthodox works, noted for their innovation and complexity.
A man content to exist outside the classical establishment, Stockhausen saw his influence extend beyond it as well. Among his advocates were the Beatles, who included the composer on the collage cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

He had taken a leading part in the development of electronic music, and his early instrumental compositions similarly struck out in new directions, in terms of their formal abstraction, rhythmic complexity and startling sound. Such works answered the need felt in postwar Europe for reconstruction and logic, the logic to forestall any recurrence of war and genocide. They made Mr. Stockhausen a beacon to younger composers. Karlheinz Stockhausen
German composer of modern music, electronic music and operas. He was initially influenced by the music of Anton Webern , and by serialism (a method of composing non-tonal music). He studied under Olivier Messiaen in 1952, and his early works, like Spiel and Kreuzspiel , show the influence of both these masters. He was one of the first composers to write electronic music, having first studied phonetics and information/communication theory at Bonn University. Kontakte is a compostion which includes a tape playback of electronic sounds which zip and swirl about via loudspeakers placed around the audience. The Zyklus , for solo percussion, is written so that the performance can start on any page, and it may be read upside down, or from right to left, or not, as the performer chooses.

    Karlheinz Stockhausen
Karlheinz Stockhausen died Wednesday ( obit. ). I had heard him mentioned several times as an electronic pioneer and an avant-garde composer who influenced popular music from the Beatles (he was on the Sgt. Pepper cover collage) to Sonic Youth, yet I admittedly (like most I presume) had heard little of his music. Like any kind of music, if you're interested in it, look to the pioneers and heavyweights, and if you missed their contributions while they were alive, a wake is an appropriate time to take a moment to examine somebody's work, so for the last couple days I've been diving in. I learned that Stockhausen ( wiki ) did much more than tinker with electronics, he was a quixotic visionary who (along with John Cage) pioneered the use of chance in music, even having musical scores which could be read by the performer upside down or begun at a random page. Stockhausen also experimented with atonal music, which even today sound challenging, and probably much more so to audiences of the fifties and sixties. He was always looking for new possibilities in sound, and the music I've heard from him has very different styles, from noise to abstract choral arrangements to strange silence>note cluster collages. He is most influentially noted, though, for his electronic experiments, incorporating new musical equipment with his

He studied with Martin at the Cologne Musikhochschule (1947-51), but the decisive stimulus came from his encounter with Messiaen 's Mode de valeurs at Darmstadt in 1951 . There he saw possibilities of long-range serial process which he pursued in Kreuzspiel (1951) and KontraPunkte (1952), both for piano-based ensemble. The latter piece was written during a period of study with Messiaen in Paris, and while there he made a first essay in electronic music. On returning to Cologne he continued this activity, notably in Gesang der Jünglinge for vocal and synthesized sounds on tape (1956). At the same time, he pursued the ramifications of serial instrumental music in a cycle of 11 piano pieces (1956), in Zeitmaße for wind quintet (1956) and in Gruppen for three orchestras (1957). In all these scores he began working with large groups of notes rather than with the isolated points that the avant garde had inherited from Webern and Messiaen.

A press release from Stockhausen Verlag (via John Supko The composer Karlheinz Stockhausen passed away on December 5th 2007 at his home in Kuerten-Kettenberg and will be buried in the Waldfriedhof (forest cemetery) in Kuerten.... Suzanne Stephens and Kathinka Pasveer, who have performed many of his works and, together with him, have taken care of the scores, compact discs, books, films, flowers, shrubs, and trees will continue to disseminate his work throughout the world, as prescribed in the statutes of the Stockhausen Foundation for Music, of which they are executive board members. Stockhausen always said that GOD gave birth to him and calls him home. …for love is stronger than death. IN FRIENDSHIP and gratitude for everything that he has given to us personally and to humanity through his love and his music, we bid FAREWELL to Karlheinz Stockhausen, who lived to bring celestial music to humans, and human music to the celestial beings, so that Man may listen to GOD and GOD may hear His children. On December 5th he ascended with JOY through HEAVEN’S DOOR, in order to continue to compose in PARADISE with COSMIC PULSES in eternal HARMONY, as he had always hoped to do: You, who summon me to Heaven, Eva, Mikael and Maria, let me eternally compose music for Heaven’s Father-Mother, GOD creator of Cosmic Music. May Saint Michael, together with Heaven’s musicians in ANGEL PROCESSIONS and INVISIBLE CHOIRS welcome him with a fitting musical GREETING. On behalf of him and following his example, we will endeavor to continue to protect the music.

[One mp3 album below the fold] In his book on David Bowie's Low album, Hugo Wilcken refers to Karlheinz Stockhausen's work as "dryly cerebral" and the composer himself as "more admired than listened to." A bit harsh to this fan, though my guess is that the latter statement is basically accurate, i.e., the name-drops and influential tags far outnumber the instances of mindful, attentive listening to Stockhausen's recorded works. As a part of my lifelong quest for new musical forms and languages to explore and assimilate, I have spent the past 20+ years trying to counterbalance this unfortunate statistic. When he passed away on December 5, 2007, at the age of 79, Stockhausen left behind a monumental body of work that includes compositions for electronics (

Between 1947 and 1951 he attended the Cologne Musikhochschule, but it was his attendance at Darmstadt (1951) and the subsequent years studying under Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire that had the most significant impact upon his musical development. During this period he began his exploration of serialism and made his first ventures into electronic music the former first realized in 1951's piano-oriented Kreuzspiel and followed by KontraPunkte in 1952. Although he achieved some recognition with these earlier works, the piece that fully established his reputation on an international scale was the 1956 magnetic tape composition , created after the completion of his studies in Paris. This reputation was further reinforced the following year by the three-orchestra composition
