Mantra
Music and the Centers of Man
There is also music that goes through all the centers: hence there are moments in which you are addressed in a purely sacred, a purely religious way; and other moments in which you are addressed purely sensually, purely erotically. That is pretty reckless music. One must be very strong to be able to experience that completely. Above all, this music must be exceptionally well balanced, fantastically composed. If it is not, then there are overloadings, and when one hears it one is overexcited in a certain way, and brought out of equilibrium. That is what should be the most important thing now: that each person should gradually become conscious enough to choose specific music and to be able to say: "I choose that within myself which comes to vibration through this music."
The Composer and his Spirit
Momente , 1962-64) to name something. But that no longer has anything to do with me. None of you knows "Beethoven." He is a myth! He is a series of letters. None of you knows the person. Seen from the exterior he was a decrepit little man who usually had pains in the ear and belly-aches, who now and then ate a hare and drank a glass of wine, who was usually grousing like a madman and quarrelling with housekeepers: he was certainly a complex and, to many, an unsympathetic man. With a very fine sensitivity to vibrations you might perhaps have understood what kind of a being the other Beethoven was, whom Bettina von Arnim described. She was a wise woman. She got him to talk, and saw what a wonderful soul lay behind this wild facade. So she quoted sentences of his that are fantastic, so wise and so enlightened! She managed it. For the others he was a taciturn type. Today of course, today everyone finds his music wonderful. But what is that? Everyone finds

STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ BIOGRAPHY
Stockhausen was among the leading avant-garde figures in German music from the 1950s onwards. In spite of material difficulties, he studied in Cologne with Frank Martin and was subsequently strongly influenced by attendance at Darmstadt, where summer sessions contributed largely to the development of new music. He went on to study with Messiaen in Paris. Parallel to his work in electronic music, he explored the human element in performance, moving from total serialism, in which every aspect of a piece is controlled by a predetermined serial pattern, to a more flexible approach, making use of every device available. Works Kontre-Punkte of 1952 as the first whole number, No. 1. A varied and fascinating series of compositions includes Stimmung for electronically treated voices

There he saw possibilities of long-range serial process which he pursued in Kreuzspiel (1951) and KontraPunkte (1952), both for piano-based ensemble. The latter piece was written during a period of study with Messiaen in Paris, and while there he made a first essay in electronic music.
On returning to Cologne he continued this activity, notably in Gesang der J¼nglinge for vocal and synthesized sounds on tape (1956).
At the same time, he pursued the ramifications of serial instrumental music in a cycle of 11 piano pieces (1956), in ZeitmaŸe for wind quintet (1956) and in Gruppen for three orchestras (1957).
In all these scores he began working with large groups of notes rather than with the isolated points that the avant garde had inherited from Webern and Messiaen.

Karlheinz Stockhausen is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the postwar era. He has moved through many different stages in his career, but his widespread use of electronics throughout his work has had a lasting impact on the classical, avant-garde, and electronic music communities. Born in 1928, Stockhausen began studying composition in 1947 in his native Cologne, Germany, where he developed long-range serial compositions. Stockhausen's first major interest in electronics came during a 1951 trip to Paris to study under Olivier Messiaen . In 1956, after returning to Cologne, Stockhausen released Gesang der J?nglinge , his first electronic music breakthrough as well as one of the first tape-loop works ever created. Four years later, he unveiled Kontakte , one of the first compositions to mix live instrumentation with pre-recorded material. Throughout the rest of the 1960s he worked almost exclusively with electronics, using a combination of live orchestration, microphones, electrical filters, sine-wave generators, and ring modulators in pieces like Mikrophonie I and II and Mixtur

In 1952 he went to Paris, where he studied with the composers Olivier Messiaen and, for a time, Darius Milhaud. Returning to Cologne in 1953, Stockhausen joined its celebrated electronic-music studio West German Broadcasting (Westdeutscher Rundfunk), where he served as artistic director from 1963 to 1977. His Elektronische Studie I (1953; "Electronic Study") was the first musical piece composed from sine-wave sounds, while Elektronische Studie II (1954) was the first work of electronic music to be notated and published. From 1954 to 1956, at the University of Bonn, Stockhausen studied phonetics, acoustics, and information theory, all of which influenced his musical composition. Having lectured at summer courses on new music in Darmstadt since 1953, he began teaching composition there in 1957 and established a similar series of workshops at Cologne in 1963. Stockhausen lectured and gave concerts of his music throughout Europe and North America. From 1971 to 1977 he was professor of composition at the State Academy for Music in Cologne. Stockhausen's explorations of fundamental psychological and acoustical aspects of music were highly independent and remarkably free of outside influences. Serialism (music based on a series of tones in an ordered arrangement without regard for traditional tonality) was a guiding principle for him. But whereas composers such as Anton Webern and Arnold Schoenberg had confined the serial principle to pitch, Stockhausen, beginning with his composition
