Reference Works Archives Primary Sources Secondary Sources There is no lack of academic study of Still. Recent biographical work has begun evaluating Still in all his complexity. The most scholarly study of Still's life, Benjamin Griffith Edward's dissertation "The Life of William Grant Still," appeared in 1987. This work represents the most extensive, comprehensive, and critical biography of Still to date. It presents a fairly balanced portrait of Still's early and midcareer; however, the turbulent decades of the 1950s and 1960s are not as well treated as the earlier years. Problematically, the figure of Verna Arvey remains in the background. Edward's volume has yet to appear in updated book form. Nor has any other full-length biography appeared.

      STILL, William Grant 1895-1978.
Typed letter signed "Bill Still" and dated May 30th 1965
Addressed to "Bill and Phyllis." 1 page. Small octavo. Written on Still's personal stationery, with "From the Desk of William Grant Still" printed at head (slightly creased). Still thanks the recipients for sending their book, which he states should be valuable to everyone - but particularly to us because today the business end is just as important as the creative!" Still goes on to say that he has just had his 70th birthday and that there were several concerts devoted to my compositions - gifts - honors and even a Testimonial Banquet at the New Music Center." We believe the addressee "Bill" to most probably be Still's attorney in matters relating to music publishing. "Still's prolific and influential career as a commercial arranger is only beginning to be explored. As the first black American to have a symphony performed by a major orchestra, to conduct a white radio orchestra (Deep River Hour, 1932), to conduct a major orchestra (Los Angeles PO, 1936), to have an opera produced by a major company and to win a series of commissions and performances from major American orchestras, his achievements were many."
