He worked as an arranger for early radio, on Broadway, and in Hollywood; major symphony orchestras performed his concert works; and an opera, written in collaboration with Langston Hughes, was produced by the New York City Opera. Despite these successes the composer's name gradually faded into obscurity. This book brings William Grant Still out of the archives and examines his place in America's musical heritage. It also provides a revealing window into our recent cultural past.

An accessible introduction to the dean of African American composers In this compact introduction to the life and work of eminent African American composer William Grant Still (1895-1978), Catherine Parsons Smith tracks the composer's interrelated careers in popular and concert music. Still merged both musical traditions in his work, studying composition with George W. Chadwick at the New England Conservatory, collaborating with Langston Hughes on Troubled Island, and working as a commercial arranger and composer on Broadway and radio during the Harlem Renaissance. Still also played in the pit band for Shuffle Along, served as recording director for the first black-owned record label, Black Swan, and arranged music for artists such as Sophie Tucker, Paul Whiteman, and Artie Shaw. Best known for his Afro-American Symphony and other works that drew heavily on black American musical heritage, Still struggled against financial hardship and declining attention to his work, which he attributed to political and racist conspiracies. This "dean of Afro-American composers" created his own, unique version of musical modernism, influencing commercial music, symphonic music, and opera in the process. "This book will be the standard work on William Grant Still for at least twenty years. Smith provides a brilliant narrative of Still's active career, his cooperation with Carl Van Vechten, and his prestige as an American composer. A useful introduction to Still's life, career, music, and sociological importance."Wayne D. Shirley, emeritus senior music specialist, Library of Congress

    Classically Black: William Grant Still
Listen to this program William Grant Still: A Centennial Tribute features a generous sampling of Still's works, as well as an intimate discussion with Judith Anne Still, daughter of the man often called "the Dean of Negro Composers." Still achieved many "firsts" in his career: he was the first African American in the United States to have a symphony performed by a major symphony orchestra, the first African American to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the Deep South, the first African American to have an opera produced by a major U.S. opera company. The program is the fifth in the Classically Black series, produced by WILL-FM’s Roger Cooper and distributed nationally by Public Radio International. Cooper said the series was created to fill a void in programming. While many programs about black jazz or blues artists were available, there were none featuring black classical artists, he said. When William Grant Still mounted the podium and began conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1936 — it marked the first time that an African-American had led a major symphonic orchestra in the U.S. Raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Still began studying medicine but gave it up to pursue his first love — a career in music — a career which saw him not only conducting but composing. His symphonies, operas and ballets have been performed in many parts of the world. His most popular work is the ballet “Lenox Avenue,” depicting life in Harlem. Music of the week: What I'm listening to, this July 4th
    • Jul 4, 2007

William Grant Still's Symphony number 1 , the "Afro-American" symphony. Astonishing music maybe the best American symphony ever composed. William Grant Still was born in 1895 in Mississippi and raised in Arkansas. He became the first African-American composer to have a symphony this one performed by an American orchestra, in 1931. His Symphony number 1 is classical music but heavily influenced by jazz and blues kind of like a more sensuous George Gershwin. As a Duke University retrospective on Still describes: "The principal theme of [the first] movement is an original 12-bar blues, first stated in the English horn. The melody is especially relevant as a symbol of the heritage of slavery and freedom." The symphony goes on to portray a broad panorama of American life and culture. The performance you want is by Neeme Jarvi conducting the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on Chandos from 1993. It's outstanding; I've probably listened to it a hundred times. Still's symphony is paired on this disk with Duke Ellington's orchestral suite "The River", which is also great American music.
