Ronald Stevenson From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Ronald Stevenson (born March 6 in Blackburn ) is a British composer pianist , and writer about music Contents Biography List of Works (selection only) Orchestra Solo Instrument and Orchestra ... edit Biography He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now incorporated in the Royal Northern College of Music ), studying composition with Richard Hall and piano with Iso Ellinson , graduating with distinction in 1948. He moved to Scotland in the mid-1950s. As author and performer he was instrumental in reviving the works of Ferruccio Busoni , and corresponded with Percy Grainger Among his many compositions, the largest (in terms of duration) and most famous is his Passacaglia on DSCH for solo piano, written between 1960 and 1962, based on a 13-note ground bass derived from the musical motif D, E-flat, C, B : the German transliteration of Dmitri Shostakovich 's initials ("D. Sch."). (Shostakovich used these four notes as a musical 'signature', for example in his Eighth String Quartet ). Stevenson's work takes more than an hour and a quarter to perform and may be the longest unbroken single movement composed for piano.

Contact details Ronald Stevenson (b. 1928) - Home http://www.ronaldstevensonsociety.org.uk Ronald Stevenson, composer/pianist, was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, in 1928. Of Scots and Welsh descent, he has lived in Scotland since 1952. He studied piano with the Blumenfeld pupil Iso Elinson in Manchester, and composition and orchestration with the Busoni student Guido Guerrini in Rome. He has performed on five continents. He is an honorary professor of the Shanghai Conservatory, and a visiting artist at Juilliard. In the 1980s, he made repeated visits as composer in residence to the Universities of Melbourne and Perth, Australia. He holds honorary doctorates of the Scottish Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee and Stirling. The Ronald Stevenson Society of Edinburgh, Scotland, is devoted to the promotion of his music, including the publication of scores; a Newsletter is issued three times per year. His compositions and pianism are recorded on the Altarus and Olympia labels. Stevenson’s works include two piano concertos, a concerto for violin and another for cello, a large body of piano music, and around three hundred songs. His epic choral and orchestral work, Ben Dorain, recently completed, is due to receive its first performance in Glasgow (Celtic Connections) in January, 2008.

He studied piano as a child, and began to compose at 14. He took courses in composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music from 1945 to 1948, graduating with special distinction. He studied piano with Iso Elinson (a pupil of Blumenfeld). Later, he studied orchestration at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome with the Ferruccio Busoni pupil Guido Guerrini on an Italian government scholarship (1955). Significant events in his musical development were his discovery of the music of F. Busoni , his friendship with John Ogdon - who became a fellow Busonian - and his correspondence with Percy Grainger Returning to England, Ronald Stevenson was appointed lecturer at the University of Edinburgh (in the Extra-Mural Department) in 1962. He was on the music staff at the University of Cape Town (South Mrica) from 1963 to 1965. In 1966, for his Busoni centenary radio programme he was awarded the Harriet Cohen International Music Award, and in the same year he received a Living Artist's Award from the Scottish Arts Council. He was a visiting Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1985. He also performed and gave seminars at the Julliard School, New York in 1987; he paid repeated visits in the 1980's to the Universities of Melbourne and Western Australia. Now he is a Fellow of the Royal Manchester College of Music.
